Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When my son was a baby, there was a nursery rhyme that I would sing him every night. Can you fill in the missing words? 'Twinkle, twinkle ...'

Answer: Little Star

Did you know that 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' has six verses? It was written by two English sisters, Jane and Ann Taylor in 1806. The Mad Hatter from 'Alice in Wonderland' sings a version of it at the mad tea-party. A number of famous musicians including Mozart have written musical versions of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'.
2. My daughter likes me to sing this song. I can't remember what the animal was. Do you know? 'Mary had a ..'

Answer: Little lamb

Many nursery rhymes are based on true stories, and 'Mary had a little lamb' is one of them. When she was a little girl, Mary Sawyer (Mrs Mary Tyler) took her lamb to school. Of course, the children misbehaved, and a man who was visiting the school, John Roulston went home and wrote the verses that we know and love today.
3. There is another little nursery rhyme that I like. Which little character is missing? 'Little _ _, come blow your horn'

Answer: Boy Blue

'Little Boy Blue' was first published in a book in 1744. Some people think that parts of it may have been included in a play by Shakespeare called 'King Lear'. In this rhyme, the little boy had fallen asleep under a haystack, allowing the animals to get into the corn.
4. 'Little Jack Horner' sat in the corner. What did he pull out of his pie?

Answer: Plum

Some people think that this nursery rhyme is about a churchman called Thomas Horner, who lived in the time of Henry VIII. It is suggested that he had hidden some important documents relating to churches that were being sold by the king.
5. 'Baa, baa black sheep' gave away three bags of wool. One was for the master, one for the dame and one for?

Answer: The little boy who lives down the lane

The oldest version of 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' was published in 1744. There are some suggestions that it was a protest about how much tax farmers had to pay on the wool that they had shorn from their sheep. Wool was very valuable in England, and it was taxed between the 12th and 15th centuries.
6. One of the funnier nursery rhymes I like involves lots of characters. There is a cat, a fiddle and a cow jumping over the moon. Who laughed to see such fun?

Answer: The little dog

Nobody is quite sure how old this nursery rhyme is. There is a pub in London known as 'The Cat and Fiddle', which was first opened in 1587. Lots of people have tried to see if there is a real event that the song is based on, but most likely it is meant to be a silly verse.
7. I also know a song about 'Peter Rabbit'. What did he have upon his nose?

Answer: A fly

Peter Rabbit has many adventures with his brothers, sisters and cousins. He is often trying to steal vegetables from Mr McGregor's farm. My son loves the CBeebies show that Peter Rabbit stars in.
8. Who were the naughty animals who lost their mittens?

Answer: Three little kittens

The kittens get into trouble from their mother because they lose their mittens, find them and then make them dirty. Once they wash them and make them clean she gives them some pie for their pudding.
9. Who was the person who lost her sheep?

Answer: Little Bo Peep

Did you know that there are another four verses to 'Little Bo Peep'? In these verses she finds the tails of her sheep and tries to put them back on. Little Bo Peep is also a character in the movie, 'Toy Story'.
10. What frightened Little Miss Muffet away from her curds and whey?

Answer: A spider

Curds and whey are the main ingredients in soft cottage cheese. The curds are the small pieces of cheese, and the whey is the watery liquid left behind.
