Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Add a letter to the beginning of EEL to make a word that means the same as a part of your body:

Answer: heel

An eel is a long, snake-like fish. There are several different families of eels, most of which live in oceans around the world, although there are some that live in fresh water. The longest type of eel is the slender giant moray, which has been known to grow to as much as four metres long! A baby eel is called an elver.
2. Add a letter to the beginning of PAL to make the name of a gemstone which appears to change colour when viewed from different angles:

Answer: opal

Australia is the world's biggest producer of opals. The South Australian town of Coober Pedy is probably the best-known; one of the most famous opals in the world was found there, the Olympic Australis. Another large and valuable opal is the Aurora Australis, which was found in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales. The opal is Australia's national gemstone.
3. Add a letter to the beginning of LOT to make the name of a secret plan, often for illegal purposes:

Answer: plot

One very famous plot in English history is the Gunpowder Plot, in 1605, which was a plot to assassinate King James I of England and VI of Scotland by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder explosives. The plot failed, but is celebrated with fireworks on 5 November each year as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, named after one of the conspirators of the plot. Children make an effigy called the 'guy' which is burnt on the bonfire which forms the centrepiece of the firework display.
4. Add a letter to the beginning of HOE to make a word that means something you can wear on your feet:

Answer: shoe

There are many different types of shoes for all occasions, from casual to smart, and to suit all conditions, such as sandals or flip-flops in the summer to boots in the winter. A woman's shoe with a very thin high heel is called a stiletto, a name taken from a dagger which is a weapon with a long, thin blade like the heel of the shoe.
5. Add a letter to the beginning of RAFT to make the name of a general term which covers popular pastimes such as woodcarving, cross-stitch, embroidery etc:

Answer: craft

There are many crafts you can enjoy, using all sorts of materials. Whether you want to try your hand at mosaics, toy making, macramé, knitting, or something else entirely, the list is endless! Whichever craft you think you would like to try, there will be books in your local library to help you get started and, of course, plenty of websites devoted to your chosen craft.
6. Add a letter to the beginning of VINE to make a word which is an adjective used to describe a sheep:

Answer: ovine

This type of word is actually called a collateral adjective. Feline is the collateral adjective for cat, canine for dog, equine for horses, etc. These words are different from collective nouns such as a pride of lions and my favourite, a parliament of owls! A male sheep is called a ram and a female sheep is a ewe.
7. Add a letter to the beginning of RAM to make the name of a mode of transport also known as a streetcar:

Answer: tram

Trams are a type of public transport which run on what are called tramways (or tram tracks). Nowadays they generally use electrical power obtained from an overhead wire. In England the use of trams was phased out in the 1950s and 60s in favour of buses, but trams are now making a comeback as a clean and efficient means of transportation.
8. Add a letter to the beginning of RAYON to make a word which means something you can draw with and use to colour pictures:

Answer: crayon

Most crayons are made from paraffin wax, which can be dyed to a huge variety of different colours. Crayola is probably the most widely-recognised brand name; they are the same company which makes Silly Putty.

Rayon is a fibre used for clothing, which is manufactured from a cellulose originally obtained from wood pulp. It is cheaper than natural materials such as silk, which it was developed to imitate. The material is very versatile; it can be used to make curtains, bedding, tablecloths etc. and has many industrial uses too.
9. Add a letter to the beginning of EARTH to make a word that means the same as a fireplace:

Answer: hearth

Although we now think of a hearth as a cosy place to sit near in the winter, fireplaces have been around since ancient times. They were often the central hub of the home, and used for cooking as well as providing heat. In Ancient Greek myth, Hestia is the goddess of the hearth, home and family. Her Roman counterpart is called Vesta.
10. Last question! Now type the initial letters of all your nine answers, in order, into the box below to spell out the name of a children's game that is usually played outside:

Answer: hopscotch

Hopscotch has been a playground staple for hundreds of years. It is possible that it even dates back to Roman times, although this is uncertain. There are, however, records of it being played and enjoyed by children since the mid-17th century. There are many variations around the world, but the principle is similar; numbered squares are chalked or marked and a small item such as a stone is thrown to each number in turn.

The object is then to hop or jump through each unoccupied square to the end of the course without stepping on any lines, then turn round and come back again, picking up your stone on the way.
