Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Addy from, originally?

Answer: North Carolina

Addy and her family, consisting of Poppa, Momma, big brother Sam, Addy, and her little sister Esther, lived on a plantation with fifteen other slaves, owned by Master Stevens. Soon, Sam and Poppa get sold, which separated the family. Momma made a plan then to run away with Addy, leaving baby Esther in the hands of the kind cook and her husband.
2. What punishment did the overseer give Addy in "Meet Addy"?

Answer: He made her eat worms

Addy was having to do her least favorite job in the fields; pulling thick green worms off of tobacco plants and killing them. So to keep her mind off of the gross task at hand, she imagined herself free, wearing beautiful dresses, going to school, and never being hungry. Unfortunately, she didn't see three worms on some of the plants, and was forced to eat them by the cruel overseer.
3. What did Harriet and her friends call Addy in "Addy Learns a Lesson"?

Answer: A flunky

At Addy's new school, Sixth Street School, there was a mean girl named Harriet Davis. Although she was also African-American, no one in her immediate family had been slaves, and her family was rich, so she acted snobby and "above" the other students. When Addy tried to make friends with Harriet, Harriet just made Addy carry her schoolbooks for her, and did other things to take advantage of Addy before Addy learned to stand up for herself.
4. Addy won the spelling bee at school.

Answer: True

Addy studied hard, and eventually the spelling bee came down to her and Harriet. When given the word "principle", Harriet quickly spelled it - wrong - as "P-R-I-N-S-I-P-L-E". Addy spelled it slower than Harriet, but got it right, winning her a nice gold badge from Miss Dunn!
5. What did Mrs. Ford give Addy and Momma for Christmas?

Answer: A new lamp

Mrs. Ford owned Ford's Dress Shop. Addy and her Momma lived in a little garret above the shop. Momma was constantly sewing at night, straining her eyes over candlelight, until Mrs. Ford gave them a bright lamp to use instead.
6. Who did Addy meet at the church in "Addy's Surprise"?

Answer: Papa

Addy went to Trinity A.M.E Church - a church which really does exist in Philadelphia. She went downstairs to the basement, where people were putting on a Christmas shadow show behind a curtain. One of the men making shapes with his fingers had a very familiar voice - it was Poppa! Finally, Momma and Addy were no longer quite on their own again! Poppa came to live with them, where they continued to hope and pray that they would be reunited with Esther, Sam, Aunt Lulu and Uncle Solomon.
7. What did M'dear teach Addy learn how to do?

Answer: Double dutch

M'dear was blind, so she could 'see' with her ears and hands. She had a knack for picking up rhythms, which was how she taught Addy to double-dutch. She told her to listen to the sounds of the ropes hitting the ground, so that Addy would know just when to jump. And you know what? M'dear was right!
8. What idea did Addy have for the children's project for the church fair?

Answer: Spool puppets

Addy's church, Trinity A.M.E Church, was holding a fundraiser. The women were baking things to sell, and the men showing off their handiwork. The children had to come up with an idea of something to sell. Addy's idea of making spool puppets quickly caught on, and that was what the children wound up making to sell.
9. What did Addy read for New Year's?

Answer: The Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation was written by President Abraham Lincoln. The document freed the slaves in all the states that had left the Union. Since Addy was so good at reading, she was chosen to read the document at her church's New Year's celebration in "Changes for Addy".
10. Where did Addy hope to go to school in "High Hopes for Addy"?

Answer: The Institute for Colored Youth

Now called Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the school was founded in 1837. It is the oldest African-American school for college-level students.
