Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I brought an offering before God with my brother Cain. God was very pleased with my sacrifice of a lamb. Who am I?

Answer: Abel

My name is Abel. My parents Adam and Eve had sinned and told us stories of how God wanted us to give him a portion of what we had. Cain brought some fruits and vegetables for his sacrifice, but I gave God the very best of the first born of my flocks of sheep. I wanted to give my best to God. God was pleased and accepted my sacrifice. Cain got angry when God did not accept his. God warned him that sin would cause him to make a mistake. Unfortunately Cain did not listen and got in very bad trouble. (Genesis 4, NIV)
2. I lost my family, wealth, health, and it couldn't get much worse than that! However God comforted me better than my friends did. Who am I?

Answer: Job

My name is Job. I was so faithful to God that the devil asked God if He could put it to the test. So God allowed the devil to take away my wealth, my family, and my health, but would not let the devil kill me. My friends didn't know what to say or do and my wife told me I'd be better off if I died.

However I gave praise to God and God was there for me. He gave everything back plus much more! (Book of Job)
3. I gave up everything I had (my home, my family, and my country) to follow Naomi and serve the true God of Israel. A man named Boaz showed me kindness. Who am I?

Answer: Ruth

My name is Ruth. I wasn't married for very long when my husband, brother in law, and father in law all died. My mother in law Naomi and I were both widows. Naomi heard good news that God had blessed her people in Israel and decided to move back home. She begged me to stay, but I told her, "Where you will go, I will go. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God." When we got to Israel, I worked very hard in the fields to get food for us.

A farmer showed me kindness and gave me extra.

When we found out he was our close relative, Boaz agreed to marry me! Years later I became King David's great grandmother. You can find my entire story in the book of Ruth, one of the few books of the Bible named after a woman. (Book of Ruth)
4. I was not a brave man when God called me one. However God helped me win a battle by scaring the enemy with just a few men, some jars, and some torches. Who am I?

Answer: Gideon

My name is Gideon, and I was a poor farmer working when an angel of the Lord scared me half to death. I was shaking in my shoes when the angel called me a "mighty man of bravery". God wanted me to lead his people into battle against the Midianites, a country that had been really mean bullies to God's people. So I gathered as many men as I could find! However God sent most of them home and left me with 300 men. I thought God had gone crazy and was nervous about how we would face an army.

However God told me spy on the enemy and I saw that they were more afraid of God than I was. I followed God's plan and gave every man a torch, a jar, and a trumpet.

At my signal, we smashed the jars, lit the torches, and made a ton of noise! The enemy ran for their life and we had the victory! (Judges 6-8, NIV)
5. My mother Hannah gave me to the house of God when I was little. I was just a boy when God first called my name and the priest told me to tell God I was listening. Who am I?

Answer: Samuel

My name is Samuel and my birth was an answer to my mother's prayer. When she couldn't have children, she prayed at the tabernacle and told God if He would give her a son, she would give him back to God. God heard her prayer and I was born! I worked in the house of God and served the priest. One night while I was sleeping, I jumped up because I heard my name.

The priest Eli, told me to go back to be because he didn't call me. After this happened again, Eli told me to answer God and tell him I was listening. God told about things that were going to happen.

As I grew older, I became a prophet for God and anointed the first two kings of Israel. (1 Samuel 1-3, NIV)
6. I was a shy man, but I looked big and strong. When the prophet was going to anoint me as the first king of Israel, I hid behind some supplies and people found me. Who am I?

Answer: Saul

God's people had been led by judges, but they wanted a king so they could be like other countries. The prophet prayed to God and God led him to me. I was a donkey farmer from the smallest tribe in Israel but I towered above every one because I was big and tall. Samuel called everyone together and they had a big celebration.

However when it was time to anoint me as king, I was hiding. However, that didn't bother anyone when some men brought me out and they saw me. They shouted "Long live the king!" while Samuel anointed me as king in front of all of Israel. (1 Samuel 9-12, NIV)
7. I had a contest with a king and his false prophets to prove the true God of Israel. I prayed for God to answer by fire and God performed a miracle. Who am I?

Answer: Elijah

God stopped the rain for three years because the king in Israel was not serving him. After three years I came to the king and challenged him to a contest for all of Israel to see. I told him to bring all of his false prophets and we would make two altars.

The prophets would offer their sacrifice first, then I would do the second. I told King Ahab that the God who answers by fire would be the true king of Israel. During the contest I made fun of the false prophets because they chanted and prayed but nothing happened.

When their time was over, I made my altar and had barrels of water poured over it. (I wanted to be sure that no one doubted what happened next). I prayed a simple prayer and God sent fire that ate the altar, the rocks, and the sacrifice. All the people of Israel fell down and worshiped the true God. Because of the contest, they served Him again. (1 Kings 18, NIV)
8. I was a prophet that was supposed to preach to a wicked city. I tried not to, but changed my mind when I was swallowed by a great fish. Who am I?

Answer: Jonah

My name is Jonah! God told me to go to the very wicked city of Nineveh and tell them they needed to change their ways or God would destroy them. I didn't want to go. I took the first ship in the opposite direction, climbed on board, and took a nap. God sent a terrible storm! Finally I realized God was angry with me and asked the sailors to throw me overboard. God sent a great big fish that swallowed me. I prayed for three days and nights in the belly of the fish.

When God made the fish throw me up, I made sure to do what He said.

The city repented when I preached and God saved all the people. (Book of Jonah)
9. I was thrown in a lions' den for praying when it was against the law! God didn't let the lions hurt me though. Who am I?

Answer: Daniel

Because of some evil men, the king made it a law that no one could pray to anyone but him for an entire month. I was very sad, but I did not stop praying to God three times a day as I always had. When the evil men took me and threw me in the lions' den, they never expected to see me again! The king didn't sleep at all that night because I had been very good to him.

He came to the den the next morning and asked me, "Daniel, has your God saved you?". I told him, "Yes King! He sent an angel and shut the lions' mouths!". I didn't have a scratch on me when the king saw me. We both gave praise to God! The king threw the evil men in the den and the lions ate them up! They were pretty hungry. (Daniel 6, NIV)
10. Because God's people didn't serve Him, God allowed bad things to happen. However I brought hope to people by telling them about a Savior and a "Prince of Peace" who would come. Who am I?

Answer: Isaiah

My name is Isaiah and I prophesied to kings and God's people. God had said terrible things would happen because His people didn't obey Him. However, God told me to give His people a promise. I told God's people to have hope because God would give a child born of a virgin and he would bring peace to us. I told them, "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6, NIV)

God also used the prophets Jeremiah, Hosea, Ezekiel and many others to speak to His people during the difficult times as well.
