Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Day of Doom" opens with Dan Cahill drinking a goblet of what he believes is the serum made from the '39 Clues' ingredients he gathered as a last resort to counter the evil Vesper plan. His sister Amy, however, switches the serum out with a pureed concoction of something else. What does Dan actually drink?

Answer: Beets, Brussels sprouts, and collard greens

In the course of their original hunt for the 39 Clues, Dan and Amy discovered that while the serum developed by Gideon Cahill all those years ago would truly grant someone super strength, agility, intelligence, artistic ability and more, it would also kill you. You would be amazing and incredible for a short time, then go out in a blaze of glory.

With the Vespers in posession of the last piece to construct the Machina Findi Mundi, a doomsday device, Dan feels that taking the serum will be the only way to succeed against their foes, who still have members of their (extended) family and friends hostage.

What Amy doesn't know is that Dan has a second vial of the serum hidden away.
2. At the command center in Attleboro (Massachusetts), Ian Jabra and Evan Tolliver have just succeeded in breaking into Sinead Starling (Vesper Three)'s emails when they get a phone call from Phoenix Wizard, whom they thought had died trying to escape from the Vespers. From where is he calling?

Answer: Washington state

The remaining Vesper hostages (Natalie Kabra, Reagan Holt, Ted Starling, Fiske Cahill, Nellie Gomez) had been led to believe that they were in Germany, but Phoenix, after falling into the river, eventually found himself to be in the Cascades in Washington state.

Evan tries to contact Amy to let her know that Phoenix has been found alive and that they are flying to Washington to collect him, but the email bounces back and he can't get through to her cell phone.
3. Amy and Dan, along with Atticus and Jake Rosenbloom are on a train to Washington, D.C. in pursuit of Isabel Kabra (Vesper Two) when they get another message from Vesper One gloating about his success. When he shows the hostages to the foursome, they see Ted blinking a message in Morse code. What does he tell them?

Answer: Riley McGrath is Vesper One.

Sinead and Ted Starling had met 'Riley McGrath' in the past, but he didn't know at the time that it was Vesper One. When Vesper One pretends to be the hiker 'Martin Holds' to make them think they were in Germany, Ted recognizes his voice as Riley McGrath's, and connects the dots that he is Vesper One. But he doesn't realize at the time that both Riley McGrath and Martin Holds are just pseudonyms.

Unbeknownst to Amy and the others, Evan and Ian had also come across the name of Riley McGrath in Sinead's emails.
4. Once in D.C., Dan, Amy, Jake and Atticus go to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, following a clue from Jake's memory regarding Lewis and Clark. When they find the exhibit, they learn that Isabel Kabra was there ahead of them. What item of Lewis and Clark's had she examined?

Answer: Compass

Originally unsure why Isabel was going to D.C., Atticus then remembered his mother (a Guardian) repeatedly saying Lewis and Clark on her deathbed. Sure enough, when they arrive at the exhibit, the curator confirms that a woman, in her forties, attractive with dark hair, was indeed there.

To see the compass, which was not actually on display and requires an appointment to view, Amy makes up a story about being students in a college scholarship competition and that Isabel is the teacher working with their competition. This allows them access.

Unfortunately, they also learn that Isabel 'accidentally' dropped the compass while examining it, so the foursome are unsure if she tampered with it or did a switch-out of the original, leaving a potential fake behind.
5. As they leave the museum, the four friends are set upon by Vesper goons and, with a prearranged plan, they scatter in four different directions. Amy sees Isabel and runs towards her, disabling two goons in the process. When she catches up to Isabel in a blind alley, it turns out to be a trap, and Isabel orders three of her henchmen to kill Amy. Who saves Amy's life?

Answer: Dan

The sound of police car sirens and men rushing towards them spooks Isabel, and she demands that her men whisk her off to safety, which they do through a manhole into the sewers.

Instead of the expected army of policemen, Amy is surprised to only see Dan poke his head around the corner. Using his phone and its amp upgrade and modified speakers 'on steroids,' Dan explains that he played a movie scene with a SWAT team saving the day.
6. Jonah Wizard and Hamilton Holt join Ian, Evan and Phoenix at a diner before going to find the hostages. They had just finished catching each other up when a 'waitress' approaches them and shows them a gun, forcing them up and herding them out of the diner to a waiting van. Who captured them?

Answer: Cheyenne Wyoming (Vesper Six)

Even though Cheyenne is known to them, they do not initially recognize her when she approaches them, pretending to be a Jonah Wizard fan. Once they are forced into the van, she removes her wig, colored contact lenses, and cotton balls from her mouth before explaining, "A little body padding to add twenty pounds, face putty to make wrinkles, and voilą, even someone beautiful can be made to look ugly."

Phoenix doesn't miss the chance to respond with a nasty quip, "You are ugly. On the inside."
7. Dan, Amy, Jake and Atticus examine the photo of the markings on the back of the artifact, and determine that it matches geographical coordinates for a subduction zone in the Cascade Mountains. They decide to fly there immediately, but are unable to book a flight because all flights have been grounded.

Answer: True

Evan, Ian, Jonah and Hamilton had already experienced strange phenomena and turbulent flights getting to Washington, and it turns out that it is not isolated to just their experiences. Something had happened to change the Earth's magnetic fields, and airplanes' avionics systems were no longer functioning as they should.

Upon hearing this news, Dan and Amy realize immediately that it must be an effect of the doomsday device being activated.

With no other recourse, they book train travel instead, which means it will take them nearly two full days to reach their destination.
8. Ian is pulled out of the small, dark room that he and the others were thrust into after being captured and brought to another room where he finds his mother Isabel on a large TV screen, waiting to speak with him. She attempts to convince him that she is dying and shows him a large, reddish-purple mass on her arm, claiming that she was poisoned. Does Ian believe her?

Answer: No

Isabel tries to manipulate her son into thinking that she still loves them, even though she shot her own daughter at the end of the hunt for the 39 Clues. She tries to convince him to prove his loyalty by killing one of the other hostages, and Ian plays along and tells her that he will.

When Vesper One follows up with another (over a speaker) interrogation, Ian tries to play their egos off against each other by telling him that his mother claimed to be Vesper One, and that the others were all working for her.

In the process, Ian tells Vesper One that he is following his mother's orders, and plans to kill one of the hostages, but Vesper One turns the tables on him, revealing that the other hostages are all in the darkened room that he is being interrogated in. Once Vesper One disconnects, Ian explains his plan to the others, and convinces everyone that he is still very much on their side.
9. With a required stop to switch trains in Chicago, the foursome discover that Isabel and her men are also on the train. They work so hard to avoid being seen by Isabel that when it is time to board once again, they miss someone else who follows them aboard. Who?

Answer: Sinead Starling

Sinead reveals herself a little later, and she is actually there to help Amy and the others! Once the action (of Q11) dies down, she explains that everything she had done had been for her brothers, but when Vesper One refused to release Ted, and treated him just as poorly as the other hostages, Sinead refused to continue working for the Vespers.
10. Atticus and Jake create a distraction that draws Isabel out of her compartment, and Dan and Amy search her cabin while she is gone. What unexpected tidbit of information do they discover?

Answer: Isabel is texting Dan, pretending to be his father.

Through the whole ordeal with the hostages and being forced to hunt down pieces of the Machina Findi Mundi, Dan had been receiving texts from someone claiming to be his father, even though he was supposed to be dead. As the imposter, Isabel had done a very convincing job, although Dan certainly had suspicions (coupled with hope).

Dan and Amy narrowly escape Isabel's compartment, only to be found by Isabel in their own compartment a few minutes later.
11. Amy and the others are finally confronted by Isabel on the train, and when the lights go out as they enter a tunnel, a fight ensues. When the lights come back on, Isabel and her henchmen are all gone, except for one man left behind dead. But it is soon discovered that someone else is missing. Who did Isabel grab and take with her?

Answer: Atticus

Dealing with the surprise of the dead henchman and the fact that it was Sinead that shot him and saved their lives, it takes everyone a few moments to realize that Atticus is missing. Their confusion is doubled when the train suddenly comes to a screeching halt.

Amy, Dan, Jake and Sinead find themselves faced with a dilemma: has Isabel stopped the train and gotten off with Atticus (in the middle of a tunnel in Colorado), or does she just want them to think that?
12. As the truck with the hostages arrives at their destination, the three Vespers are arguing with each other. After Sandy brags about his ability as a weatherman to predict things, who punches him in the face and asks, "So how come you didn't see that coming?"

Answer: Casper

As villains in a hierarchy often do, the three Vespers were arguing about each others' suitability to hold the positions they have. Unbeknownst to them, while they were driving, the hostages in the back had managed to partially break free (still shackled to a chain, but the chain was no longer bolted to the truck). When Casper opened the back of the truck, the hostages jumped out and quickly rendered the three Vespers unconscious.

They find a key and free themselves from the shackles, then decide to split into two groups and "go and nail some Vespers."

When the three Vespers come to a little while later, Sandy sees his chance to eliminate the competition and he disables the two Wyoming siblings, drags them to a room and chains them up.
13. The group led by Fiske Cahillcomes finds a large room with an enormous machine emitting a low hum. Guessing that it is the Doomsday device, they are examining it when someone interrupts them. Who?

Answer: Damien Vesper III (Vesper One)

The group of five former hostages sees a spot on the machine designed to fit Gideon Cahill's ring (that is actually a gear). Just as they are talking about it, Damien arrives and confirms their suspicions.

Before they can do anything, though, Damien calls in his goons to take them prisoner once again. They try their best, but are overwhelmed. Fiske, the last man standing, is shot but not killed.
14. Narrowly avoiding another trap, the other group (now together with Amy, Dan and Jake) arrive and try to overpower Damien's minions. But things don't always work out for heroes, and two of them are killed in the scuffle. Who dies?

Answer: Evan and Natalie

They quickly take down a half-dozen Vesper henchmen, and Evan has got another one in a headlock when he is shot in the chest by Damien Vesper.

Natalie uses the confusion to try to damage and disable the Doomsday device, but Damien does something with a remote to charge the device electrically, and Natalie is electrocuted when she tries to smash it with a large metal bar.

The rest of them continue fighting and overpower the minions, but not before Damien slips away. With the device electrified, they are unable to destroy it and must come up with another plan to defeat the Vespers.
15. Despite their best efforts, the Cahills and their allies are unable to stop Vesper One from initiating the Machina Findi Mundi to wreak havoc in the world. But one of his former Vesper allies IS able to foil his plans, sacrificing him/herself in the process. Who kills Damien Vesper III?

Answer: Isabel Kabra

While wandering the corridors of the underground labyrinth, Isabel sees the aftermath of the earlier fight, specifically the fact that her daughter Natalie is dead. In spite of her previous claim of having disowned her children, this causes something in her to snap, and she downs the 39 Clues serum that is in Dan's backpack.

When she comes into the room where Damien is gloating over his plan, she barrels through Vesper thugs like they are nothing, and tackles Damien just as he activates the machine to full power. They are both sucked into the machine's effects and Damien is killed nearly instantly. With her super strength, Isabel lasts long enough to irreparably damage the machine, and she is disintegrated in the resultant explosion.
