Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which division of the Armed Forces did Caractacus Pott work prior to his retirement?

Answer: Royal Navy

Caractacus Pott was a Commander in the British Royal Navy before he retired and became an explorer and inventor. In the musical, the family name is Potts, however, in the book it is Pott.

Ian Fleming's famous spy, James Bond, also held the same rank in the Royal Navy.
2. What is the name of the children's mother?

Answer: Mimsie

In the book, Commander Pott was married to a woman called Mimsie and they are a happy family. In the musical version, she has presumably passed away prior to their adventures, as it is just Caractacus and his two children, Jeremy and Jemima.
3. What make of car was "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang"?

Answer: Paragon Panther

The Paragon Panther was a famous racing car painted in English racing green with a 12 cylinder, eight-litre charged engine. It was based on a pre-1914 Mercedes chassis, six cylinder Maybach airplane engine-powered race car built by Count Louis Zborowski.
4. What did the Potts find at the end of the cave on the French shore?

At the end of the cave which ran over a mile inland from the shore, they found a secret door behind which was a collection of boxes and cases containing guns, ammunition, daggers, hand-grenades and bombs.
5. Who is the leader of the criminal gang?

Answer: Joe the Monster

Joe the Monster was a criminal mastermind responsible for bank robberies and hold-ups throughout England. His gang was comprised of Man-Mountain Fink (a multiple prison escapee), Blood-Money Banks (a blackmailer) and Soapy Sam (an explosive expert).
6. What was the name of the sweets that Commander Pott invented?

Answer: Crackpot Whistling Sweets

The small round sweets had two holes in the middle of them and would make a whistle sound when placed between teeth and blown outwards. The sweets were sold to Lord Skrumshus for 1000 pounds plus royalties. They were known as Toot Sweets in the musical version.
7. Where did the car fly the family for their picnic?

Answer: Goodwin Sands

Goodwin Sands is located around 6 miles off the coast of Kent. It is a major hazard to ships and many wrecks can be found in the area.

Due to the large number of people wanting to go to the beach the same day as the Pott family and creating endless traffic jams, the car flew above them all and out to sea, landing on Goodwin Sands, which they had to themselves.
8. What is the license plate number of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang?

Answer: GEN II

The license plate GEN II was interpreted by the children as "Genii" conveying the magical properties of the car.

BMT 216A is the license plate on James Bond's original Aston Martin DB5; OFP 857 was the license plate on the VW Beetle Herbie from "The Love Bug" and BDR 529 was seen on the 1974 Monaco Bluesmobile in the movie "The Blues Brothers".
9. What word was "written' on the 5000 franc note that was given to Monsieur Bon-Bon?

Answer: Gangsters

Jeremy used the corkscrew on his pocket knife to punch holes in the 5000 franc note to spell the word "Gangsters", to warn Monsieur Bon-Bon that there were gangsters outside who were about to rob him.
10. What secret recipe was given to the family by Monsieur and Madame Bon-Bon?

Answer: Fudge

The Bon-Bons gave them their secret recipe for fudge (which they pronounced "fooj"). The recipe is set out in the book, and ingredients include chocolate, sugar, condensed milk and butter. Apparently it tastes quite good!

Ian Fleming also gave the recipe for "Scrambled Eggs James Bond' in his short story "007 in New York".
