Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Chalet School girl is the only one who intends to become a surgeon?

Answer: Dorothy Brentham

Dorothy first appears as a new junior middle in "The Rivals of the Chalet School", and she is mentioned periodically throughout the rest of the Austrian books. Her final appearance is as a fifth former in "The Chalet School Goes to It" ("The Chalet School at War").

She and her form mates discuss their future careers, and Dorothy says that she intends to become a surgeon, and as she is an only child her doctor father will pay for her training.
2. The fifth formers discuss their future careers in "The Chalet School Goes to It" ("The Chalet School at War"). Three of them intend to become a nurse. Which of these girls does NOT want to go in to nursing?

Answer: Amy Stevens

Ernestine is one of five new girls for the fifth form in this book, all of them having come from the recently closed Braemar House. Amy asks her what she intends to do in the future, saying that "Kitty wants to be a nurse, and so does Greta". Ernestine confirms that that is also what she wants to do, as she loves looking after sick people. She later suggests that the three of them might run a nursing home, although this idea is not taken seriously by the others.

On the other hand, Amy says that she plans to teach.
3. At which hospital does Vicky McNab train?

Answer: Westminster

Vicky first appeared in "Monica Turns up Trumps", where she and her younger sister Alixe travel from their home in Kenya to stay with their cousin Monica Marilliar and her father, who is also a doctor. When their school, Braemar House, closes down, the cousins attend the Chalet School from "The Chalet School Goes to It" ("The Chalet School at War").

Vicky is described at this point as wanting to be a doctor, perhaps because of her uncle's influence. She leaves school before the term described in "Lavender Laughs at the Chalet School" ("Lavender Leigh at the Chalet School"), and her uncle says that she is currently training at the Westminster Hospital.

The other hospitals are all in Scotland, which Vicky is not mentioned as visiting.
4. What was the subject of the paper that won Daisy Venables the Ransome medal?

Answer: Childhood infectious diseases

Daisy, the elder niece of Dr Jem Russell, was born in Australia and came to Austria with her mother and sister, following the deaths of her father and brothers. She attended the Chalet School during its last years in Austria, then moved to Guernsey and then Armishire. She leaves school in the term following "The Chalet School and Rosalie", and she studies medicine at the University of Oxford.

We learn in "Three Go to the Chalet School" that she has won the Ransome medal, while still a student, for a paper on infectious diseases in children, and it is mentioned shortly afterwards that she wishes to work with children after qualifying.

However, a year after starting work she marries another doctor, Laurie Rosomon, and she stops her work so that she can look after her children. By the end of the series she has moved to Switzerland, where her husband works at the Sanatorium. As she was undoubtedly talented, it is to be hoped that she might return to work once her children have grown up.
5. Who is the only German Chalet School girl to become a nurse?

Answer: Emmie Linders

Emmie first joined the Chalet School as a 12 year old in "Expolits of the Chalet Girls". She, like most of the other German and Austrian girls, is forced to leave the school following the Anschluss. Emmie and her younger sister, Joanna, manage to escape Nazi Germany during the events of "The Highland Twins at the Chalet School".

At this time she hopes to train as a nursery school teacher; however, it is mentioned in "Gay From China at the Chalet School" ("Gay Lambert at the Chalet School") that she is studying to be a child nurse.
6. Which sixth former announces in "The Chalet School and the Island" her intention to begin her nurse training?

Answer: Pamela Whitlock

During "The Chalet School and the Island" Jo Maynard entertains some of the sixth formers, and she asks them what their future plans are. Pamela Whitlock is mentioned for the first time in the series, when she says that she plans to nurse, and has a place at St Luke's the following September, after which she hopes to work on tuberculosis cases at the Sanatorium.

She is still at the school the following year, however, and appears in the special sixth during "Peggy of the Chalet School". Given that tuberculosis was becoming less of a problem by the time that Pamela would have finished her training it is to be hoped that she was also able to specialise in something else.
7. Which former Chalet School girl returned to the school as a matron?

Answer: Barbara Henschell

Barbara's first mention in the series was in "Gay from China at the Chalet School" ("Gay Lambert at the Chalet School"), although she is not a new girl then. Her last term is in "The Wrong Chalet School", although she is also one of the first pupils at the finishing branch.

She does not mention her future career plans during her time as a pupil, but a few years later she returns to the school as a matron. She takes part in several incidents throughout the rest of the series and is described as a motherly young woman who is a great favourite with her pupils.
8. Which prefect roles does Dora Robson take on unexpectedly halfway through her last term at the school?

Answer: Netball and staff

Dora is a quiet girl who is a member of the sixth form, although not a prefect, by the time of "Shocks for the Chalet School". During "Bride Leads the Chalet School" Julie Lucy ends up in hospital with peritonitis, and the prefects have to find another prefect form among the sixth formers. Dora, who has already been shown as being talented at the sport, is initially asked to take on Julie's role as captain of netball; later, when the other prefects realise that Julie will be absent for at least the rest of the term, Dora is also asked to take on the rest of Julie's duties, which include being staff prefect.

A few of the prefects express surprise that Dora was not asked to be a prefect at the start of the previous term, but head girl Bride Bettany suggests that she was not asked as this was to be her last term. She already had a nursing place at St Bartholemew's Hospital, and was planning to start there after Easter.
9. Nancy Chester is recovering from an operation when she attends the Chalet School's coming of age celebrations. Which illness has she had, which necessitates a period of recovery away from her hospital?

Answer: Appendicitis

Nancy is living on Guernsey when the Chalet School arrives on the island in "The Chalet School in Exile", and she attends the school from the age of seven. Her final term at the main school is during "Changes for the Chalet School", although she then spends two years at the finishing branch in Switzerland.

Her younger cousin Vi Lucy mentions that she has gone to her hospital at last in "The Coming of Age at the Chalet School", although this is the first time that her future career is mentioned. However, she appears shortly afterwards at the school's celebrations, and mentions that she is on sick leave following an attack of appendicitis. Two years later she gets engaged to a doctor at her hospital, but she says that she does not intend to get married straight away, so it is to be hoped that she is able to use her training for a while before giving it up.
10. Finally, which Maynard girl starts to work hard after she decides that she wants to become a doctor?

Answer: Margot

Margot, the youngest of the triplet daughters born to Jo and Jack Maynard at the end of "The Chalet School in Exile", is a major character throughout the second half of the series. She is originally portrayed as brilliant but lazy, who is frequently at least a form behind her sisters Len and Con because she refuses to study.

However, by the time that she becomes a senior she starts to work hard at her lessons, and she mentions in "The Chalet School Triplets" that she would like follow in her father's footsteps and become a doctor once she has left school. Before the end of her school career she has got into the University of Edinburgh, and she also mentions that she hopes to become a medical missionary after graduating.
