Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was unusual about the trees in Hetwan country?

Answer: They sang

When the kids noticed the sun coming up, they heard a beautiful song being sung. They realized that the trees were singing because of the sunrise. When the rat-like tree choppers arrived and chopped them down, the trees grew at an alarming rate. Later, they clapped along with the songs the kids sang.
2. Where did Christopher not apply for a job to?

Answer: Foot Locker

The real-world Christopher had lost his job because he had lied and told his employer that he had lost his third grandparent in eight weeks. He tried to apply at the Einstein Bagel restaurant near his house, but the manager blew him off. The manager at Papa John's said that Christopher was too young. Finally, he applied to a copy place and got a job immediately.
3. What was the problem with Christopher's new boss?

Answer: He was a racist Nazi

Mr. Trent, Christopher's boss at the copy shop, felt that the white Christian male couldn't succeed in America. The only reason he hired Christopher was because he was white. Keith, an employee, had a swastika tattoo and followed Mr. Trent's every word.

When the group presented Christopher with their ideas, he left the building. Keith tracked Christopher down and threatened to hurt his family if he told anyone about what he had been told.
4. What did April sing for Christopher to cheer him up?

Answer: The theme song from "Friends"

April did sing songs from "Rent," but Christopher hated them. He thought that they were too depressing. Since the group needed cheering, and April knew that Christopher loved to watch TV, she sang him the theme song from "Friends" as they walked through the frightening Hetwan section of Everworld.
5. Who did Ganymede appear to be jealous of?

Answer: Hercules

Ganymede, a beautiful minor god, grew agitated when Jalil asked about Hercules, or Heracles. He explained that everyone always asked about Hercules and never a god like Apollo. Ganymede was born a mortal but was given immortality thanks to Zeus.
6. What did Dionysus promise Christopher in exchange for freeing him?

Answer: Immortality

Dionysus, the god of wine, was caught by the Hetwan along with Ganymede, cup-bearer to the gods of Olympus. The two of them traveled with the aliens toward Ka Anor to be eaten alive. The Hetwan had chained Dionysus by his neck. When Christopher and the others were captured, Dionysus offered them all immortality to save him.
7. Who got shot in the forearm with the Hetwan's stinging venom?

Answer: David

David was protecting everyone as they escaped from the Hetwans. He used Galahad's sword to fend off any attacking Hetwan. Eventually one of the aliens took out his spear the Hetwan used to spit their venom and shot at David. He bellowed in pain as the venom sunk into his flesh. Both Christopher and Jalil got sprayed with the acid-like toxin on other parts of their bodies.
8. What did Ka Anor's tower look like?

Answer: A hypodermic needle

For five miles the ground was covered with large, sharp stakes in the ground that had the color of dried blood. After that, the tower had a moat that was filled with what appeared to be lava. It stood over a mile high and looked like a hypodermic needle. The tower looked like a very large version of the Hetwan's spitting spears. Christopher called it "Junkie Dream Mountain."
9. How did the kids cross the treacherous area around Ka Anor's tower?

Answer: They traveled on winged alien Hetwan

When David worried over how to make it over the countless spikes on the ground, Dionysus merrily said "One doesn't walk to the city of Ka Anor, dear boy, one flies." There was a species of Hetwan called Red Wings. The Red Wings flew much faster than the Hetwan.

They had strawberry-colored wings and little propeller-like feet. Each kid, along with Ganymede and Dionysus, was carried by a flying Red Wing.
10. Why was Christopher so depressed near the end of the story?

Answer: He felt responsible for Ganymede's death

While riding on the flying Red Wings, Christopher fell and faced a painful death on the spikes below. Ganymede made his Red Wing fly down so he could save Christopher's life. He was so grateful that he cried "I owe you, I owe you." Later, Ganymede was beaten by a large group of Hetwan and was fed to Ka Anor. Christopher heard Ganymede's screams as the god-eater took his time devouring the minor god.

He told himself there was no forgiveness for his failing to save Ganymede. Christopher drank heavily near the end of the book.
