2. In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", we meet a teacher who, we later find out, has been helping Lord Voldemort become immortal by obtaining the Philosopher's Stone that is kept at Hogwarts. What is the name of this teacher?

Answer: Professor Quirrel

Professor Quirinus Quirrell came to Hogwarts to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. Quirrell was also a host body for Lord Voldemort, beginning in the first book. Just before the first book began Quirrell went on a one year leave, and according to Hagrid he has never looked or acted the same since. His main reason to come back to Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry was for Voldemort to gain immortality. Quirrell was known to wear a turban on his head which hid the bodiless Voldemort at the back of his head. At the end of the book, Harry, Ron, and Hermione go into the secret doorway underneath the three-headed dog, Fluffy, to save the Philosopher's Stone. They think in the end that Professor Snape is after it, but it's actually Quirrell. Harry kills Quirrell in the end.

3. In "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" we learn that Salazar Slytherin created a secret Chamber where he kept a monster to kill muggle-borns in Hogwarts. A girl was murdered by the monster. What kind of monster lives inside the Chamber of Secrets?

Answer: Basilisk

The Chamber of Secrets was created by Salazar Slytherin, a Hogwarts founder, while he was building Hogwarts. He built the Chamber with the beast in it to kill muggle-borns that went to Hogwarts. The monster within the Chamber, a Basilisk, was trying to attack muggle-borns in Harry's second year. That year, it was released by Ginny Weasley, whose soul was being used by Tom Marvolo Riddle. Ginny had written all her thoughts inside the diary and Tom Riddle had used her as a host to open the Chamber. The Chamber can only be opened by speaking Parseltongue. Tom Riddle had opened it fifty years ago using Parseltongue. In the end, Harry kills the Basilisk using the sword of Gryffindor. The sword came out of the Sorting Hat, which Fawkes the Phoenix had brought for Harry when he was in need of help. Harry used a Basilisk fang, covered in Basilisk blood, to destroy Tom Riddle's diary. His diary was eventually revealed to be a Horcrux.

5. In the third book of the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," a person reputed to be a dangerous mass murderer has escaped from Azkaban, a prison for wizards. What is this prisoner's name?

Answer: Sirius Black

Sirius and Harry Potter's father, James, were great friends during their time at Hogwarts. They also had two other friends in Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Sirius was the Potter's secret keeper, but convinced them to change to Peter Pettigrew at the last minute. Just after Harry was born Lord Voldemort decided to go after Harry and kill him. Dumbledore advised the Potters to use the Fidelius Charm to conceal them from the Dark Lord. To orchestrate the charm a third person is needed to be told the whereabouts of the person(s). Peter then turned the Potters' whereabouts over to the Dark Lord. Sirius is revealed to be Harry's godfather in this book. He was also the first person known to have escaped Azkaban.

6. In "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" Professor Remus Lupin teaches in his Defence Against the Dark Arts class how to repel boggarts. What is Lupin's boggart?

Answer: A full moon

Professor Remus J. Lupin is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. One day he brings Harry Potter's class down to the staffroom. In the room there is a wardrobe with a boggart inside. A boggart is a shape shifter, which takes the form of what you fear. When it takes this form, think of something silly happening to it and shout "Riddikulus." The boggart will then turn into something silly. The class thinks Lupin's boggart is a silver orb but it's really a full moon. Lupin is a werewolf and he dreads when there's a full moon once a month. When Lupin was going to Hogwarts as a student he would go to transform in the Shrieking Shack. His best friends, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew, became unregistered animagi and went with him. Snape makes the Wolfsbane Potion for Lupin so he can have a safe transformation once a month.

7. The fourth book of the Harry Potter series was "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." In the book, a wizarding event is being held at Hogwarts. Two schools come from across the globe to compete. What is the name of the competition being held at Hogwarts?

Answer: Triwizard Tournament

The Triwizard Tournament pits three people, one from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, one from Durmstrang Institute, and the last from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, against each other in several challenges to determine a winner. The winner receives a trophy and a monetary prize. Due to some tampering with the Goblet of Fire, the device that chooses the competitors, in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" four competitors were selected. The competitors were Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, Cedric Diggory, and Harry Potter. There were a total of three tasks in this challenge. The first was to retrieve a golden egg guarded by a dragon. The second was to save a friend that was captured and placed underwater. The final challenge was to navigate a maze and find the cup.

8. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", who was Harry supposed to rescue in the Second Task?

Answer: Ron Weasley

Ron and Hermione were both taken away while Harry was studying for the Second Task. Right before the event started though, he began to worry because they were not there. After finding his way to the "treasures", Harry untied Ron. Harry then began to untie Hermione. A group of merpeople came over to Harry and hissed, "Only One!" Harry responded by saying, "She's my friend too!" Before Harry could further continue arguing his case to a fish, Viktor Krum came and took Hermione Granger. Cedric Diggory then came and took away Cho Chang. Harry stayed there for a minute watching for Fleur Delacour to come and rescue her sister Gabrielle. Harry untied Gabrielle, and escaped the clawing grindylows, getting to the top. Even though Harry was next to last, because Fleur never made it, since he rescued Gabrielle too, he was given second place.

9. In "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", what was the name of the teacher who was appointed to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts?

Answer: Dolores Umbridge

Dolores Jane Umbridge is hated by every student in Hogwarts except the Slytherins and the Inquisitorial Squad. She is the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic and was appointed to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts because Professor Dumbledore couldn't come up with a teacher for that post. Umbridge focuses on teaching her students theory and not practically. She doesn't allow anyone to use spells and says that they don't need to. She also hates Harry and every Gryffindor along with the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. Umbridge hates half-breeds and got trampled by a bunch of centaurs in the fifth book because she insulted them and used magic on a centaur. Dolores Umbridge is described by Argus Filch as 'the best thing that ever happened to Hogwarts.' She also became Headmistress for a while but then she was kicked out. Also, she used to come up with decrees banning certain things that students liked to do. She also banned Harry, Fred, and George from ever playing Quidditch and took away their broomsticks. Every teacher at Hogwarts hates her along with the students, the ghosts and Peeves. Umbridge also gave a lot of detentions to Harry and forced him to write 'I must not tell lies' at the back of his hand with his own blood. In the seventh book, we hear that she is still at the Ministry and is creating a anti-muggle-born plan. It's known that she was sent to Azkaban because of her problem with half-breeds.

10. What attacked Ron in the Department of Mysteries in book five?

Answer: A brain

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood were in the Department of Mysteries. They were in there because Harry had seen Sirius Black, being held captive by Voldemort. Harry and his friends flew to London and got into the Department of Mysteries, but they didn't know which particular room Sirius was in. They had to look through them until they found the right one. In one of the rooms was a big tank of brains. Later, when the death eaters turned up, trying to capture them, they ran into the room of the brains. Ron was grabbed by the brain, because he was a bit fuddled by a jinx, and tentacles came out, wrapping him up. It took a very precise severing charm to get them off. Ron had very deep welts in his chest for weeks, and they left deep scars.

11. In the early portion of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" Harry Potter wins a potion, in Potions class. What potion did he win?

Answer: Felix Felicis

Horace Slughorn was the new Potions teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley were both in his class. They both didn't get the books for the class and were forced to use some used textbooks. One was new and the other, old and tattered. Ron got the newer one, while Harry got the older one. Horace Slughorn asked Harry's class to make a Draught of Living Death potion, and whoever made the best potion would receive a vial of Felix Felicis. Felix Felicis guarantees that everything the drinker of the potion does will be successful for a certain period of time. While Harry is looking at the directions for making the potion he notices several notes about how to make the potion in his book. Harry follows the notes and wins the potion.

12. In "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" what do we learn that Voldemort has made?

Answer: Horcruxes

We learn in the sixth book that Voldemort has created several Horcruxes. Horcruxes are objects that have some of your soul contained inside, so if you die you will come back. Albus Dumbledore has had a hunch that he had made them ever since he saw the diary in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." Hermione said that it was dangerous to split your soul in two, let alone in seven. Lord Voldemort's seven Horcruxes are as follows: his diary, a ring, a locket, a cup, a diadem, a snake, and Harry Potter himself. The diary was the first Horcrux; Harry destroyed it with a basilisk fang. Dumbledore found the second Horcrux in the Gaunts' shack. It was a ring belonging to Marvolo Gaunt. It was passed down to him by his ancestors. Dumbledore destroyed it with Gryffindor's Sword. Harry and Dumbledore went in a cave to find another Horcrux, the locket. However, after going through different tasks they found the locket to be a fake. The real one had been stolen by Regulus Arcturus Black. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley found and destroyed the real one in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Helga Hufflepuff's cup was hidden in Bellatrix Lestrange's Gringotts vault. Harry, Ron and Hermione broke in and destroyed it with a basilisk fang. Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem was hidden in the Room of Requirement and destroyed by Fiendfyre. Nagini, Voldemort's snake, was destroyed by Neville Longbottom with Gryffindor's Sword. Voldemort killed Harry but he came back, no longer a Horcrux.

13. In 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' we learn that two Death Eaters, who are brother and sister, have taken the jobs of Defense Against the Dark Arts and Muggle Studies. What are their names?

Answer: Alecto and Amycus Carrow

Alecto and Amycus Carrow are brother and sister. They both are also Death Eaters. Alecto was assigned to teach Muggle Studies, while her brother Amycus was assigned to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. Alecto and Amycus were also the ones who informed Lord Voldemort that Harry Potter was in the Ravenclaw tower, on the night that the Battle of Hogwarts occurred. However, they could not prevent Harry from finding the diadem Horcrux, because they both were cursed by Luna Lovegood and Professor McGonagall while they were trying to capture Harry. They both were also known to be harsh on students and use the unforgivable curses as punishments.

14. In "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," Harry, Ron and Hermione are camping out after finding the sword of Godric Gryffindor, contemplating what to do next. Harry mistakenly says the word "Voldemort" and a band of Snatchers arrives. Who is leading the band of Snatchers?

Answer: Fenrir Greyback

When confronted by the Snatchers, Harry pretends to be Vernon Dudley. This pretense is quickly scrapped when Greyback finds a pair of glasses and a copy of the Daily Prophet open to a "Wanted" advertisement with Harry's face on it.

15. Joanne Rowling, or J. K. Rowling, wrote the seven Harry Potter books. Joanne does not have a middle name; however she says she included the "K" because her grandmother's name began with this letter. What was her grandmother's first name?

Answer: Kathleen

Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965 in Yate, Gloucestershire, England. She was given no middle name at birth. In 1995 Joanne finished her manuscript that would soon be entitle "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone." At the time of publishing, she decided to go by the initials "J. K." The "K" stands for nothing in Joanne's name, but it stands for her grandmother's name Kathleen. She decided to go by a pen name because she thought young boys wouldn't want to read a book written by a woman. After releasing the first Harry Potter book, Joanne got married and her last name changed to Murray. She stuck with the pen name J. K. Rowling for the rest of the series. The final book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," was released in July of 2007. The books were so popular they were made into movies. Over 400 million copies of the Harry Potter series have been sold worldwide. The books have also been translated in over 65 different languages.
