Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Harry and Ron face a mountain troll

Answer: HP1 - The Sorcerer's Stone

Hermione overhears Ron talking disparagingly about her, mocking her Charms class actions. This upsets her and she runs to cry in a girls lavatory. At dinner, the school is put on alert when a mountain troll has somehow infiltrated the castle. As the prefects are all escorting their housemates back to their common rooms, Harry and Ron realize that Hermione isn't there. Since she didn't hear the warning, she was in danger.

The two of them track her down to a bathroom where the troll is. They manage to distract the troll to get Hermione out. Ron also properly uses the spell that Hermione was giving him feedback on, and uses the troll club to knock the troll unconscious.
2. Harry catches a snitch in his mouth

Answer: HP1 - The Sorcerer's Stone

During Harry's first-ever Quidditch match, Harry was surreptitiously attacked by Quirrell/Voldemort, who made Harry's broom violently try to throw Harry off of it. Quirrell/Voldemort failed because of Snape sending a counter-curse and Hermione causing a commotion in the stands. Once he was able to ride his broom without distraction, he was still swinging around when he accidentally caught the snitch in his mouth. This was deemed a legal catch, thus winning the game for Gryffindor.

This unorthodox catch was a key plot point in the seventh book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Dumbledore's bequest in his will was that Harry get the snitch that he'd caught in his very first Quidditch match. Snitches are charmed with flesh memory; they remember who first touched them so that disputes could be settled in games. So when the Minister of Magic gave Harry the snitch, he expected something to be revealed. But nothing happened. Later that night, though, Harry reminded Ron and Hermione that he'd nearly swallowed the snitch in his first game. So he pressed his lips to it, and a written message -- "I open before the close." -- appeared then disappeared. They then suspected that there was something that Dumbledore really wanted Harry to have, but he didn't want the Ministry of Magic to know what it was.

Near the climax of the last book, when Harry was on his way to sacrifice himself to Voldemort, his kiss did open the snitch, revealing the Resurrection Stone. Using the stone, he was able to summon his parents, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin to walk with him to meet his fate.
3. Hagrid hatches a dragon egg

Answer: HP1 - The Sorcerer's Stone

Hagrid won a fertile dragon egg in a card game in Hogsmeade. He thought that his opponent was a dragon dealer, when in reality it was Quirrell/Voldemort. After winning the egg, he assured the "dealer" that he could properly raise a dragon, as he had no problem raising Fluffy, a three-headed dog. He then revealed how he made Fluffy docile: by playing music so that Fluffy would fall asleep.

He hatched the dragon, which he named Norbert. Just after Norbert hatched, they saw that Malfoy had followed them to Hagrid's hut and had seen the whole hatching through a window. So as to keep Hagrid out of trouble, Ron contacted his brother Charlie, who raises dragons in Romania. They snuck Norbert up to the top of a castle tower, where a team from Romania came and took Norbert.

Years later, at Bill Weasley's wedding, Hagrid saw Charlie and asked about Norbert. Charlie informed him that Norbert was now called Norberta, as *he* was actually a she.
4. Harry, Ron, and Hermione attend Sir Nicholas's Death Day feast.

Answer: HP2 - The Chamber of Secrets

Sir Nicholas invited Harry, Ron, and Hermione to his 500th anniversary party of his Death Day. He mentioned that he was executed on October 31, 1492. This fact is what cemented the dates within the Harry Potter universe.

The students didn't find the party entertaining, as the dungeon where it was held was filled with spoiled food. This was necessary for the ghosts in attendance to be able to sense the food; the smellier, the better. But it quite disgusted the living.
5. Harry loses all the bones in his arm

Answer: HP2 - The Chamber of Secrets

During the opening Quidditch match in Harry's second year, house elf Dobby cursed one of the bludgers to follow Harry and injure him so that he'd want to leave Hogwarts. During its pursuit, it hit Harry's right forearm, breaking it. Despite the injury, Harry went on to catch the snitch and win the game.

When spectators came down to take care of him, Professor Lockhart saw the broken arm and tried to mend it with a spell. He instead removed all the bones in Harry's forearm. Madame Pomfrey was upset that they hadn't brought him straight to the infirmary.

Madame Pomfrey: "You should have come straight to me!... I can mend bones in a second - but growing them back ... I'll be able to, certainly, but it will be painful... you'll have to stay the night."

She gave Harry Skele-Gro, which tastes awful, not at all like pumpkin juice.
6. Harry and Ron become Goyle and Crabbe

Answer: HP2 - The Chamber of Secrets

During Harry's second year, the Chamber of Secrets had been opened by someone, letting Slytherin's monster out to try and kill muggle-born students. Harry and his friends were sure that it was either Malfoy, or that he knew who was the Heir of Slytherin. Hermione came up with the idea to use Polyjuice Potion to allow them to take the form of Slytherins and trick Malfoy into giving them the information. The potion would take weeks to brew.

When they were ready, they drugged Crabb and Goyle with adulterated treats. They took hairs from the Slytherins to add to the Polyjuice Potion, while Hermione had already gotten hairs from a female Slytherin, Millicent Bullstrode. All three drank their potions after adding the hairs. Harry and Ron did turn into Goyle and Crabb respectively, but Hermione ran into a bathroom cubicle and bade the others to proceed with their mission.

When they returned (and learned nothing of consequence), Hermione was still in the bathroom stall. She then opened the door, revealing that she was now half-human/half-cat. The hair she'd gotten was not from Millicent, but from her cat. She didn't get back to human appearance until after the Christmas holidays.
7. Hermione adopts Crookshanks

Answer: HP3 - The Prisoner of Azkaban

Hermione bought Crookshanks the cat at the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley just before they went to Hogwarts for their third year. Ron was upset about this, as the cat was always trying to get at Scabbers, Ron's pet rat. He thought it was because of the natural animosity between cats and rats. But the truth was more interesting.

Crookshanks was a half-kneazle. A kneazle was an intelligent cat-like magical being. Crookshanks, even being only half kneazle, was relatively intelligent. He realized that Ron's rat Scabbers was actually an animagus, and one with ill intentions. That's why he kept pursuing Scabbers. Crookshanks was also instrumental for Sirius Black to get into Gryffindor tower. He recognized that Sirius in his dog-form Snuffles had good intentions. Crookshanks saw Neville's list of passwords for the tower and gave them to Sirius.
8. Harry learns to cast a Patronus

Answer: HP3 - The Prisoner of Azkaban

After being almost kissed by a Dementor on the Hogwarts Express when coming to school in September, Harry asks Professor Lupin if he could teach Harry the spell he'd used to expel the Dementor on the train. In a private tutoring session, Lupin successfully teaches Harry how to summon a Patronus.
9. Harry learns how to sneak into the Shrieking Shack

Answer: HP3 - The Prisoner of Azkaban

After Ron got Scabbers back after thinking Crookshanks had killed him, Ron, Harry, and Hermione were headed back to the castle from Hagrid's house. That's when Sirius in his dog-form Snuffles saw Scabbers. He jumped on Ron and dragged him to a secret passage that was hidden by the Whomping Willow, an animated tree that whomped people who got close to it. (It had pummeled Arthur Weasley's Ford Anglia when Ron crashed it into the tree.)

Harry and Hermione managed to also get into the passage, and followed it to its end, into the Shrieking Shack, a supposedly most-haunted house in Britain.
10. Harry transforms into a water-breathing being

Answer: HP4 - The Goblet of Fire

Harry needs to be able to swim in the lake for an hour. Harry is given gillyweed by Professor Moody, which gives Harry gills and webbed feet and hands. He then was able to rescue Ron and Gabrielle, who were being held by the lake's merpeople as part of the Triwizard Tournament.

In the movie, it was Neville that suggested gillyweed and attained some for Harry. I felt this was a better plot than the book. In the book, Moody gives Neville a book that *does* describe the effects of gillyweed. Moody did this so that Harry's performance in the second contest would look more honest. But Neville never got around to suggesting gillyweed, which is why Moody had to do it instead.
11. Harry encounters a sphinx

Answer: HP4 - The Goblet of Fire

In the final Triwizard Tournament challenge, the champions have to navigate a maze full of distractions and dangers in order to find the Triwizard Cup. One of them was a sphinx, which gave Harry a riddle to solve. If he solved it, he could continue; if not, the sphinx would attack. But Harry worked out the riddle and continued unabated.
12. Cedric Diggory is murdered

Answer: HP4 - The Goblet of Fire

In the third Triwizard Tournament event (the maze), Cedric first saw the Triwizard Cup. But as he ran towards it, an acromantula attacked him. Harry then arrived on scene. The combined magic of both boys stunned the spider. They then found themselves next to the Cup. They both argued about who should grab the cup and become the winner, by both insisting the other take the honor. They finally agreed to simultaneously grab the cup, making the win a joint Hogwarts victory. But as they grabbed it, they were both transported away.

They arrived at the Little Hangleton graveyard. Cedric advised caution, and they both kept their wands at the ready. An intense pain hit Harry in his forehead scar. Then they heard a high, cold voice order, "Kill the spare." Then a second voice called out, "Avada Kedavra!" A green light flashed, and then Harry heard a thud. It was Cedric; he'd been killed by Peter Pettigrew.

The movie version of this varied a bit. Instead of an acromantula, it was vines that tripped Cedric and were dragging him into the hedgerow. (They may've been specifically cursed by Moody/Crouch to stop all the champions except Harry.) Harry rescues Cedric, they agree to both take the Cup, and are transported to the graveyard. Once there, Cedric is more awed by the fact that the Cup was a portkey. He was then shortly thereafter murdered by Pettigrew.
13. Harry meets Nymphadora Tonks

Answer: HP5 - The Order of the Phoenix

Harry had seen the re-incarnation of Voldemort in the Little Hangleton graveyard at the end of the Triwizard Tournament. Voldemort had then tried to duel Harry to the death, but he escaped. WIth the next school year coming and Harry needing to go, The Order of the Phoenix felt that Voldemort would continue to try and kill Harry, so they sent a large escort of Aurors to escort him to the Weasley farm. One of those Aurors was Nymphadora Tonks, a young metamorphagus and Moody's protégé.
14. Arthur Weasley is almost murdered

Answer: HP5 - The Order of the Phoenix

Just before Christmas break, Voldemort sends his snake Nagini (which is also a horcrux) to the Ministry of Magic, where members of the Order of the Phoenix are guarding the Hall of Prophecy. Upon encountering Arthur Weasley, Nagini attacks him, nearly killing him.

Since Harry is also a horcrux, he sees the attack from the viewpoint of Nagini. Fortunately, McGonagall and Dumbledore believe Harry when he says he knows that this attack was really happening. Dumbledore sends Professor Everard (the portrait thereof) to visit his portrait at the Ministry of Magic to verify Arthur's condition and to sound an alarm.

Arthur is taken to St. Mungo's, where he is eventually healed, as the snake's bites wouldn't stop bleeding.
15. Harry meets Neville's parents

Answer: HP5 - The Order of the Phoenix

Harry's meeting the Longbottoms is rather by accident. Harry and the Weasleys are visiting Arthur after he was attacked by Nagini. At the same time, Neville and his grandmother Augusta were visiting his parents, who were permanent residents of St. Mungo's. They had been tortured by Bellatrix Lastrange. This drove them insane; they no longer could function in society.

Harry and the Weasleys witnessed the bittersweet interaction between Alice Longbottom and her son. She saved gum wrappers and presented them to Neville every time he visited. Augusta suggest he dispose of the wrapper after they left; however, he placed it in his wallet, along with several wrappers that Alice had given him in the past.

In the movie, Harry didn't meet the Longbottoms. Instead, he saw Neville looking at the group portrait of the former Order of the Phoenix, which included both Neville's and Harry's parents. He told Harry about Bellatrix's attack on his parents and how they were mentally injured. He expressed his pride in his parents, to which Harry said that they would also be proud of him.
16. Harry becomes Quidditch captain

Answer: HP6 - The Half-Blood Prince

Oliver Wood had been Gryffindor Quidditch captain since before Harry had come to Hogwarts. After he graduated, Angelina Johnson was the captain during Harry's fifth year. (However, he and the Weasley twins had been banned from playing after they attacked Draco Malfoy in an after-match brawl.)

During Harry's sixth year, he was appointed captain. He played Seeker as he had in previous years, except for the last game, which he missed because he had to serve detention for dueling and injuring Draco Malfoy with the Sectumsempra spell.
17. Aragog dies

Answer: HP6 - The Half-Blood Prince

When Harry needed to get an uncorrupted memory from Professor Slughorn, he had the idea of taking some Felix Felicis (aka Liquid Luck) to hopefully aid him. After taking some, instead of going to Slughorn's room, Harry said that he felt that a trip to Hagrid's was the thing to do.

On his way there, he bumped into Slughorn at the greenhouse. Despite Slughorn telling Harry that he should be back in the castle, Harry proceeded to Hagrid's, with Slughorn in tow. Once there, Hagrid was next to a pit that he had dug to bury his long-time pet, Aragog the acromantula. Slughorn was amazed that Hagrid had been able to kill Aragog, not knowing that they were friends. Slughorn then examined Aragog and surreptitiously took some of Aragog's venom, as it is very valuable. Slughorn offered to say a eulogy, which touched Hagrid.

The three of them then went to Hagrid's hut, where the two adults started drinking to Aragog. Harry kept magically refilling the wine, and the adults got quite drunk, with Hagrid eventually passing out. Alone with Slughorn, Harry then started plying him to give him the memory that Dumbledore needed. He used a bit of emotional blackmail, reminding Slughorn that Voldemort had killed Lily, his favorite student and Harry's mother. Slughorn relented, and extracted the memory for Harry to take to Dumbledore.
18. Harry and Dumbledore visit a cave

Answer: HP6 - The Half-Blood Prince

Harry and Dumbledore visit a seaside cave where Dumbledore believes a horcrux of Voldemort's is hidden. The cave is where Tom Riddle and two other orphans from his orphanage -- Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop -- explored when they were brought to the coast on holiday. Tom somehow terrorized Amy and Dennis to the point that they could not explain what had happened.
