The story of Jesus' resurrection is found in the New Testament in all four gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John each tell a different perspective of the events surrounding the crucifixion and Jesus re-appearing to his disciples.

Answer: Pilate

Pilate was the Roman governor that was in charge of Jesus' death. He had ordered Jesus crucified when the chief of priests and Pharisees condemned Jesus.

After Jesus had died. Joseph and Nicodemus asked Pilate for permission to bury Jesus. They did not want Jesus to be hanging on a cross during the Sabbath day or the Passover weekend.

The Sabbath was very special to the Jews, and Joseph and Nicodemus did not want Jesus to be shamed after his death. They wanted their friend to have a proper burial.

Answer: Pharisees and the temple priests

The chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate after Jesus was put in the tomb, because they were worried about what Jesus had said before he had been crucified.

The chief priests told Pilate, "While Jesus was alive he said, 'After three days I will rise again.' Place guards around the tomb until the third day. If you do not his disciples may come and steal the body. They will tell people Jesus has risen from the dead. This lie will be worse than what Jesus did."

Pilate gave the Pharisees and priests what they asked. He placed a guard around the tomb so no one could disturb the body until after the three days were over.

According to Matthew 28: 2-4 (NLT), while the soldiers were guarding the tomb, an angel came down and there was an earthquake. The angel's appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid they fainted.

There was no sign of Jesus' body after the events were finished. The soldiers told the chief priests and the Pharisees what had happened. The chief priests and the Pharisees did not want their story to get out to others. They gave the soldiers money and told them to lie. This can be found in Matthew 28:13-15 (NLT)

Answer: an angel

Mary and Mary Magdalene wanted to go see the body of Jesus and anoint him, which was a Jewish custom. They did not know how they would open the tomb or talk to the guards when they arrived.

When they got to the tomb, they were surprised. An angel was nearby and the stone was rolled aside. He told them, "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified.He isn't here. He is risen from the dead. Look, this is where they laid his body!"

The angel told them to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive and had risen just as he had said. The angel told them to give them the message that Jesus would meet them in Galilee.

The women ran to tell the disciples what they had seen. They were filled with joy!

Answer: Peter and John

Most of the disciples could not believe what the women had told them. However, Peter and John ran to the tomb to see for themselves.

John outran Peter but did not go inside. He saw clothes they had wrapped Jesus in from the outside of the tomb. Peter went in and noticed that the clothes were folded. John remembered what Jesus had said and believed.

Mary was crying and two angels asked her why she was crying. She told them someone had taken Jesus and she didn't know where he had gone. Just before she left, she heard another familiar voice.

"Dear woman, why are you crying?" Jesus asked her. "Who are you looking for?"

Mary thought Jesus was the gardener. "Sir," she said, "if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him."

"Mary!" Jesus said."

When Jesus called her name, Mary was surprised. She looked up recognized Jesus as her teacher.

After Jesus was crucified, the disciples stayed in a locked room because they were afraid. Most of them could not believe the women who told them that Jesus had risen from the dead.

Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them!

"Peace be with you," he said. As he spoke, he showed them the scars in his hands and his side.

The disciples were filled with joy. Jesus encouraged them and showed them that he was alive!

They told others that they had seen the Lord.

On their traveling journey, the disciples shared with the traveling stranger the news that their friend Jesus had been crucified. They told him that Jesus had been a great teacher who promised in three days he would rise. They shared that morning their friends had found the tomb empty.

The stranger told them that Moses and the prophets had said all these things would be true of the Messiah, but they didn't recognize it was Jesus.

Jesus asked them, "Didn't the prophets say that the Messiah would go through suffering?" Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining all the scriptures about himself.

When they came to an inn, the disciples asked Jesus to stay with them. As they sat down to eat, Jesus took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized it was Jesus. At that moment Jesus disappeared.

The disciples asked each other, "While he was here, didn't our hearts burn while he shared the scriptures?"

The disciples ran back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples what they had seen and heard. They shared the news that Jesus was alive.

These events can be found in Luke 24:13-25, NLT.

Jesus gathered his disciples on a mountain before he went back in heaven and told them:

"I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20, NLT)

The disciples went back to Jerusalem and followed Jesus' instructions. They shared the life of Jesus and what He had done. They started the first church, performed many miracles, and helped those that were in need.
