Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Hullo. Hogwarts too?" This character, asking a fellow student the question in Diagon Alley, seems cheery and nice to begin with, but very quickly it becomes clear that their obsession with blood status is very unwelcome to the majority of the other students at the school. Who is this?

Answer: Draco Malfoy

Draco asks Harry this question when they first meet in Madam Malkin's robe shop before the beginning of their first school year. Harry very quickly is put off by Draco's bragging and dismissive words about Hagrid, but is unfortunately unable to avoid him at Hogwarts. Draco more often than not spends his time seeking out Harry to say rude and bullying things to him!
2. This child is not actually a student when they speak their first line in the books; they exclaim "Nine and three-quarters!" when asked which platform is used for the Hogwarts Express. Who is this child, who becomes a student in the second book of the series?

Answer: Ginny Weasley

Harry hears Ginny say this line when she is at King's Cross with her family, seeing her brothers off to school. Unbeknownst to Harry, Ginny is immediately taken by him, developing a crush on him that continues through years at Hogwarts, and even after Ginny has had several boyfriends! Eventually Harry reciprocates Ginny's feelings, and the two end up marrying.

Dudley Dursley is Harry's cousin and never attends Hogwarts, and Arabella Figg is a Squib who lives near the Dursleys.
3. "Gran, I've lost my toad again." This student is consistently forgetful, losing their pet before they've even boarded the train to Hogwarts! The grandmother knowingly gives the student a Remembrall, but it's useless as the student has forgotten what they're supposed to remember! Who is this scatter-brained student, whose talents shine through towards the end of the series?

Answer: Neville Longbottom

Neville is rather useless at many of his subjects, propelled no doubt by his lack of self-confidence. He has an aptitude for herbology, however, and concentrates very hard in the subject. His bravery in the Battle of Hogwarts, in his last year at Hogwarts, is foreshadowed by the commendation he receives in his first year, when Dumbledore awards him house points for his bravery in standing up to Harry, Ron, and Hermione for breaking school rules.
4. "Nearly Headless? How can you be nearly headless?" The ghost nicknamed Nearly Headless Nick has confused this student for a moment, but his demonstration of his 'nearly-headlessness' definitely gives them a shock! Who is the student who is soon put in their place? (Remember these questions are about the books, not the movies!)

Answer: Seamus Finnigan

Although Hermione is given this line in the movie, it's actually Seamus who says it in the book. Seamus is a clumsy student; he always ends up setting things on fire and not getting his spells right. He and Harry have a fallout later in the series, after Harry witnesses the death of fellow student Cedric Diggory and the return of Voldemort, the feared Dark Wizard, but they make up eventually when Seamus realizes there is a media conspiracy against Harry and Dumbledore.

Argus Filch, of course, is not a student at Hogwarts, but the caretaker.
5. A rather anticlimactic line: "Nearly", answered in response to an angry "Are you up yet?" This is the word that introduces us to a well-beloved character. Who is the student (or rather 'student-to-be') in this exchange?

Answer: Harry

Yes, it's Harry! Aunt Petunia is the one briskly addressing him. Harry is awoken from a dream about a flying motorcycle, which is most probably a memory of when Hagrid dropped him off at the Dursleys' following his parents' deaths. At this point Harry has no idea about his true destiny, but soon he is able to escape his mundane life with his aunt and uncle to attend the wonderful Hogwarts, which opens his eyes to a whole new world and changes his life, and ours, forever!
6. "Yes," this character replies to a question from Ginny about how they enjoyed their summer, "yes, it was quite enjoyable, you know. You're Harry Potter." This student has a tendency to jump from topic to topic and say things that confuse people because of how unexpected they are. Who is this student who seems to have their head in the clouds?

Answer: Luna Lovegood

Luna is a Ravenclaw. Her erratic ways have led her to be known around the school as quite a cruel nickname, Loony Lovegood. She seems outwardly to be unaware of this and of how people view her, but she is prone to feeling like she doesn't have any friends even when she does.

She believes in all sorts of creatures that are only fabled to exist, like Nargles and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, something she has learned from her father. Luna's open-mindedness more than once suggests her to be correct about creatures that people are skeptical about.
7. "And the Quaffle is taken immediately by Angelina Johnson of Gryffindor - what an excellent Chaser that girl is, and rather attractive, too-" This student's unorthodox Quidditch commentary is generally kept on topic by Professor McGonagall, but often they say what they think in a very biased way! Who is this student, a good friend of the Weasley twins?

Answer: Lee Jordan

Lee is not an objective commentator, displaying a dismissive attitude to the Slytherin team (and the other two teams, but in a less overt way) whenever they play, and calling fouls even when Madam Hooch has ruled otherwise, but he keeps the job! Lee is a very close friend of Fred and George Weasley, and their unexpected early departure during their last year of school left Lee feeling lonely and sad without his best friends, which had an adverse effect on his commentating.
8. "Has anyone seen a toad?" Yes, it's that pesky toad again! This student is helping find the missing toad; they are very knowledgeable and conscientious, and desperate to prove themselves as they are Muggle-born. They are rather unpopular at first, but very quickly are established as part of an important friendship, and saves their friends' lives more than once!

Answer: Hermione Granger

Ron and Harry dislike Hermione at first; she seems like a know-it-all, and is always trying to correct what they do wrong. Really, underneath, she feels insecure about being a Muggle-born witch surrounded by wizarding families, and her hard work is to counteract that feeling. And it pays off! Hermione soon develops a crush on Ron, something seemingly unreciprocated for years, though Ron displays ardent jealousy when Hermione strikes up a close bond with visiting student Viktor Krum.

Hermione and Ron finally share a kiss during the Battle of Hogwarts and begin a relationship.
9. This student loves Muggle football, as evidenced by the first words they speak in the series - "Send him off, ref! Red card!" - said during Harry's first Quidditch game. Who is this Hogwarts student?

Answer: Dean Thomas

Dean's favorite football team is West Ham United, an English team. In his seventh year, on the run in a time when Muggle-borns are being rounded up and having their wands taken from them, Dean reveals he doesn't know if he is a Muggle or not, because his dad left the family when he was very young, and no one knew whether he was a wizard or not. It turns out that his father was indeed a wizard, and was killed by Death Eaters. Dean has Muggle half-siblings from his mother's remarriage.

Dean dates Ginny Weasley for a long time in their later years at Hogwarts.
10. This character was a student when they said this line, but by the year the Triwizard Tournament takes place, they are working for the Ministry of Magic. Who is the character, who shows their pompous and rule-abiding propensity early on in the series with this line: "Can't stay long, Mother. I'm up front, the prefects have got two compartments to themselves-"?

Answer: Percy Weasley

Percy is the third oldest of the Weasley children. He has a fondness for sticking to the rules, so is often admonishing his prankster brothers, Fred and George. Percy revels in his job at the Ministry, but the media conspiracy that flares up against Harry and Dumbledore following Voldemort's return means that Percy is caught up in the lies and a great rift is caused between Percy and, in particular, his father, but in reality he is estranged from the whole family. Peace is made during the Battle of Hogwarts, a very short time before the Weasley family loses an integral member.
