Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What soup am I slurping for lunch if it's red and creamy and good with grilled cheese sandwiches?

Answer: cream of tomato soup

Cream of mushroom is creamy but not red, minestrone can be red but isn't creamy, and chicken noodle is usually yellow and white. Cream of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches are my colorful comfort food!
2. What soup am I slurping for supper if it has beef, potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes in it?

Answer: vegetable beef soup

Beef consomme is clear, with no vegetables or chunks of meat in it. I like all sorts of veggies in my vegetable beef soup, but I always try to have carrots, potatoes, and tomatoes in it.
3. What slurpable soup is made from an orange dairy product, a green vegetable that looks like a little tree, and a few other ingredients?

Answer: broccoli and cheese soup

I like broccoli and cheese soup best in a bowl made from crusty French bread, because you get to eat the bowl, too! I made up the other three soups, but maybe someone somewhere has slurped them.
4. What soup made of green vegetables and meatballs in a clear chicken broth is named for a special occasion in a European country?

Answer: Italian wedding soup

Okay, I hope you weren't slurping so loudly you forgot your geography. In the list of answers, only "Italian wedding soup" is named for a European country.
5. What soup am I'm slurping, with flat pieces of pasta and bits of white meat and broth?

Answer: chicken noodle soup

I like chicken noodle soup best with saltine crackers. Chicken and rice soup has chicken, but not pasta; gazpacho is a cold, red, vegetable soup, served cold; and vegetarian soup would not be made with chicken or chicken broth.
6. On a cold, foggy day, I like to slurp a thick soup made with halves of tiny yellow-green legumes.

Answer: split pea soup

Split pea soup is made of small legumes (seeds, like peas and beans, that grow in pods). Pea soup fog is a thick, sometimes greenish or yellowish smog caused by air pollution, especially before laws were passed to protect the environment.
7. What soup that recalls a character in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was really made as a substitute for green turtle soup?

Answer: mock turtle soup

I am told that mock turtle soup is tasty, and I always wanted to try it because of Alice, but the list of ingredients in a recipe I saw are a bit disgusting and hard to get. Still, it's probably more slurpable than snapping turtle, snake, or alligator soup.
8. What soup has small pasta shapes that look like letters floating around in it?

Answer: alphabet soup

When you eat alphabet soup, do you try to slurp up your name first? Do you count the letters?
9. What Mexican-style item on the soup menu in my favorite restaurant is spicy and tomato-based, usually includes both beans and meat, and can be classified as a soup, a stew, or in its own category?

Answer: chili con carne

Although the Spanish phrase "con carne" means "with meat", some chili recipes use only vegetables. Linguists (people who study language) disagree about how chili should be classified, but restaurants usually put chili on their soup menus, even though it's too thick to slurp.
10. What is my favorite soup recipe, that includes six fresh ears of a yellow grain usually served as a vegetable (cut off the cob, of course)?

Answer: corn chowder

I actually found a banana soup recipe (served cold), and butternut squash soup and carrot bisque are real, too. But my favorite soup is corn chowder, made with lots of cream, vegetable broth, and savory vegetables, especially tender, fresh corn.
