Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book, where is Percy and what acquaintance from "The Titan's Curse" does he meet up with?

Answer: Goode High School and Rachel Elizabeth Dare

Percy is escorted to the high school for an orientation by his mom, Sally Jackson. Sally is currently dating Paul Blofis, one of the teachers at Goode High School. He is the reason Percy got accepted into the school, since he's been kicked out of every other school he attended.

The reason is because of his ADHD and dyslexia-two disorders that most half-bloods are born with. Percy meets up with Rachel Elizabeth Dare, a mortal he met at Hoover Dam in "The Titan's Curse." She is a mortal who can see through the Mist, like Percy's mom, Sally. Percy and Rachel end up fighting two empousai, and one, Kelli, escapes from the school and sets it on fire. No one is hurt, though.

However, Percy and Rachel win the fight.
2. Percy was going to go to the movies after the orientation with a girl he knew well. However, because Percy was in a hurry, he had to go back to Camp Half-Blood. Who was the girl that Percy was going to go to the movies with?

Answer: Annabeth

Percy was trying to convince his mom that he wasn't going on a date with Annabeth, but Percy's mom still thought he was going on that date. When Percy told Rachel about Annabeth and that he was going to the movies with her after the orientation before the empousai fight, Rachel seemed jealous that it wasn't her, yet also she was thinking "who would go to a movie with Percy?"
3. When Percy arrived at Camp Half-Blood, who was the head of camp instead of Mr. D?

Answer: Quintus

Mr. D, aka Dionysus, has taken a leave of absence to check on the minor gods, such as Janus, Hecate, and Nemesis. In order for the camp to supposedly run smoothly while he was away, he had to hire someone to temporarily take his place, and that someone was Quintus. Percy found Quintus in the swords practice arena. Quintus is also a half-blood who is a skilled swordsman. Mrs. O'Leary, Quintus' hellhound, was playing "Get the Greek," which is a game Quintus made up.

The way Quintus played it with Mrs. O'Leary was that Quintus told Mrs. O'Leary to "Get the Greek," which meant to get the sword-fighting dummy and chew it up. Quintus was over age fifty, which is older than the average life-span of a half-blood. Unlike most hellhounds, though, Mrs. O'Leary is a kind hellhound to Quintus and Percy. Even though she gets nervous around others, she won't attack anyone without her master Quintus' permission.
4. When a quest is assigned to stop Kronos' army from attacking Camp Half-Blood, Percy is assigned leader of the quest.

Answer: false

Annabeth had wanted a quest since she was seven, the age she was when she arrived at Camp Half-Blood for the first time. Although she had wanted a quest, she was considered too young to lead one. Her chances were ruined when Percy arrived three years ago. Chiron chose Annabeth for this quest because she knew Annabeth was interested in the Labyrinth and architecture alone.

Hence, Annabeth led the quest, not Percy.
5. After a long while in the labyrinth, what Olympian goddess do Percy, Annabeth, Tyson and Grover meet up with?

Answer: Hera

When the four go through a pathway, they end up in a room with Janus, god of choices, in the center. Annabeth must choose a left or right door to go through to continue with the quest. One door leads to the right way, and the other leads to certain death. Annabeth is about to choose when Hera appears and sends Janus away.

Heras offers everyone sandwiches and lemonade. She also advises the team to go find Hephaestus, because Hera thinks he can tell them how to get to Daedalus' workshop. As they venture on, the four of them end up in Alcatraz, where they see prisons that hold cyclopes and hekatonkheires, or "hundred-handed ones." As they meet up with a hekatonkheire named Briaries, he is found in a prison cell. Tyson tries to calm Briaries, since he is crying because he is so down and he has low self-esteem.

As the group departs because they have given up on trying to get Briaries with them, the dragon Kampé gets in their way. As the four go above ground, Kampé follows. She almost kills the four of them, but they manage, barely, to escape.

They then go on looking for Hephaestus.
6. On the way to Hephaestus' workshop, the foursome reach a farm on the way that houses extraordinary animals, such as man-eating horses and red cows belonging to Apollo. What is the name of this landmark?

Answer: Triple G Ranch

Apparently, the cows are considered "sacred" to Apollo. They go into the entrance of the ranch and run into Eurytion, who is the guardian of the ranch as well as a son of Ares. Eurytion questions the group on why they are there, and warns them to leave.

They refuse, and the group is escorted by Eurytion to his boss, Geryon. The group then finds out that Eurytion is a prisoner of Geryon's. They meet Geryon and they see Nico di Angelo come through a door in the room. Geryon lets the group know that they can go through the ranch, but Nico is not allowed to leave. Percy then makes a deal with Geryon-if he could clean the man-eating horse stables by sunset, then everyone would go, including Nico.

But if not, then everyone would be held prisoner at his ranch.

When Percy sees how he can't get into the stables because the horses will eat him, he almost gives up. Then, remembering he has water powers, Percy goes to the nearby river, but when he is about to take some water, a nereid tells him not to.

She then talks to Percy and convinces him not to use the water. However, she gives him a hint on how to use the water. Percy gets the hint, and realizes that her hint about the dirt with water means that there's water in the dirt. He controls the dirt and then cleans the stables before sunset. When he returns, Geryon will not allow them all to leave because Percy did not swear on the River Styx. Percy, now furious, slays Geryon and Eurytion is free. Eurytion sets them free and as thanks, he gives Percy a silver disk that is a guide used to find Hephaestus. Later on in the night, Nico tries to summon his sister Bianca's spirit. After doing so successfully, Bianca tells Nico that it wasn't Percy's fault that she died. Nico, though, decides to stay back at the ranch. The rest go onward to find Hephaestus.
7. After Eurytion's mechanical spider leads the group to Hephaestus, he tells them that finding Daedalus is a waste of time. Hephaestus also tells the group that he will tell them where Daedalus is if they do him a favor. Hephaestus wants to know what or who is in what used to be one of his favorite forges under Mt. Saint Helens. When Percy goes to the mountain, he finds out that Telekhines are the ones inside the forge, and a Telekhine teacher is teaching its students that the gods are bad. When Percy reveals himself to them after sneaking in on a cart, he escapes and locks the door. He tells Annabeth he has it on his own after she becomes visible again. She does something very odd as she bids Percy farewell. What does Annabeth do that is so strange?

Answer: she kisses Percy

Percy then plots a plan to see what the telekhines are up to inside of Hephaestus' former Mt. Saint Helens' forge. Inside a weapon is being created for Kronos, and a teacher is teaching little telekhines about when they mature into full-grown telekhines.

They discover Percy, who uses his water powers, since lava is a liquid, and he causes the volcano to erupt, sending him into the ocean and almost awakening Typhon, the worst monster of all time.
8. Percy later drifts onto Calypso's island, Ogygia, where he is healed and he spends time with Calypso. He discovers she is the daughter of the titan Atlas, who is holding up the sky on Mount Tamalpais, the current-day equivalent of Mount Othrys, the titans' equivalent to Mount Olympus, home of the gods. As Percy reluctantly decides to leave Calypso, she gives him a flower to remember her by and to plant in Manhattan. What kind of flower is it that Percy receives?

Answer: moonlace

Moonlace is a fictional flower that glows at night in a silver color. Percy is given this because he is assisting Calypso with her garden on Ogygia and he tells her that there aren't really any gardens in Manhattan, since she is not allowed to leave her island because she supported her father in the Titan and Olympian war.

Therefore, she does not know what the world looks like today. She gives Percy the flower to remember her by and to start a garden on Percy's windowsill. She also tells Percy when he leaves that every thousand years a hero is sent to her that she can't help falling in love with but who can never stay.
9. When Percy and Annabeth find Rachel Dare after he returns to Camp Half-Blood, they descend back into the Labyrinth. Rachel leads them to an arena built by Antaeus, the son of Poseidon and Gaea, Poseidon's grandmother, also known as Mother Earth. Percy is forced to fight first a dracaena, and then a half-blood, Ethan Nakamura, who Percy refuses to fight. Percy then challenges Antaeus for his friends' freedom, which he accepts. Percy defeats Antaeus, but the rest of the monsters crowd around him and try to kill him. How does Percy escape?

Answer: he blows the Stygian ice whistle to summon Mrs. O'Leary the hellhound

This whistle was a gift from Quintus before Percy went into the Labyrinth. Quintus told Percy that if he was ever in trouble, he could blow the whistle to summon Mrs. O'Leary, Quintus' hellhound. However, the whistle only works once, since it was made of ice and it melts. Percy reluctantly blows the whistle because Juniper, Grover's dryad girlfriend, spotted Quintus near the Labyrinth entrance at Camp Half-Blood.
10. Grover and Tyson later find Pan, god of the wild, in the Labyrinth, near what Annabeth believes to be around Carlsbad Caverns. Pan is dying, and Grover is forced to release him. Before his death, he acknowledges everyone in the room except for one person. Who did Pan not acknowledge?

Answer: Nico di Angelo

Nico realizes this because he is a son of Hades, who is not highly spoken of because he is in the Underworld and lord of the dead. Hera also doesn't care for Nico for the same reasons. After Camp Half-Blood wins the battle between them and the countless monsters emerging from the Labyrinth, Nico decides that because of this reason, he will not stay at Camp Half-Blood.

However, in the end, Percy plants his moonlace flower and Nico comes to Percy's window to talk. Since it is Percy's birthday and he has cake in his room, he invites Nico inside because he realizes that Nico has probably never had a birthday cake of his own.
