Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have arrived at Hogwarts and see a group of students walk past. They are wearing silver and green robes. Which animal is their house mascot?

Answer: Serpent

The founder of Slytherin house is Salazar Slytherin. When the other founders of Hogwarts (Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff) wanted to make Hogwarts open to halfbloods, Salazar Slytherin refused and he made a secret chamber before he left the school.

He named it the 'Chamber of Secrets' and inside it he placed a Basilisk ('Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'). To open the chamber you must speak parsletongue which is snake language. The house colours are silver and green.
2. You have just finished a potions class with professor Snape in the dugeons. On your way to get back up to the Great Hall for lunch you get lost. Still in the dungeons you spot a common room, the entrance disguised as a wall. Under which part of the school are you?

Answer: Black Lake

The Slytherin common room is the only common room in the dungeons and it is underneath the Black Lake. The lake is not black, it is green like any lake and so green shines through the windows of the common room, which fits well with the Slytherin colours. To enter the common room you have to say the secret password.

In 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', Harry and Ron enter the common room while using polyjuice potion.
3. Arguably the most famous Slytherin resident was Tom Marvolo Riddle, who was a young halfblood with the abilities to do bad things. He grew up to be the most powerful dark wizard ever, Voldemort. But he grew up as an orphan in which London orphanage?

Answer: Wool's Orphanage

Tom Marvolo Riddle. Re-arrange those letters and you get 'I am Lord Voldemort'. Tom was born to Merope Gaunt a young and poor witch and Tom Riddle Senior a rich, handsome muggle. Merope cooked up a love potion to seduce Tom Riddle Senior. He drank the potion and fell in love with her.

After a while Merope fell pregnant and stopped giving her husband the love potion. She thought he would love her anyway but he didn't, he left her. She died soon after giving birth. Before dying she gave her baby to Wool's Orphanage and told them to name her son Tom Riddle after his father and his middle name was to be Marvolo after her father. Marvolo Gaunt was not only Merope's father but he was a direct descendant on Salazar Slytherin, which made baby Tom Marvolo Riddle junior also a direct descendant.
4. You are reading a book and come across the term 'Horcrux'; you are puzzled but soon find out what it is. Horcruxes are a piece of the maker's soul separated from their body and put in an object. Horcruxes are dark and dangerous magic. Lord Voldemort made seven horcruxes (only six were intended), one of which was a ring. Who did the ring belong to before Voldemort?

Answer: Marvolo Gaunt

The ring is a diamond shape with the sign of the Deathly Hallows on it. The ring was created by Death at the command of Cadmus Peverell. It eventually found its way into the hands of Lord Voldemort. The ring was made into a horcrux by Voldemort. But Voldemort was unaware that the ring was the Resurrection Stone in the story the 'The Tale of Three Brothers'. Voldemort did not know that this ring was crafted by Death. Of course he did eventually find out.

The ring was destroyed by Albus Dumbledore using the Sword of Gryffindor and the ring horcrux was no more.
5. You are finding out more and more about the rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor. The whole of the Black family were in Slytherin until it came to the turn of young Sirius Black, who desperately waned to be in Gryffindor, and so he was. He grew up to be a friendly, mischievous animagus. He joined the Order of the Phoenix and was killed by which Slytherin relative?

Answer: Bellatrix Lestrange

Sirius Black had a time in Azkaban Prison for murder, unknown to the wizarding world he was not actually guilty but the murdurer of 13 muggles was Peter Pettigrew who betrayed Lily and James Potter for Voldemort. Sirius was an animagus so he could transform into a dog at will.

He escaped from Azkaban by transforming, and the Dementors (guards) can only sense humans so they did not sense him escaping. He joined the Order of the Phoenix but was killed in a battle at the Ministry of Magic by his cousin, loyal death eater Bellatrix Lestrange.
6. You now realise that an important Slytherin name is Malfoy. The youngest Malfoy, whose name is Scorpius, is the son of Draco, who was a rival to Harry Potter during his time at Hogwarts. What is Scorpius's middle name?

Answer: Hyperion

Before dying of Dragon Pox, Abraxas Malfoy had a son named Lucius Malfoy. Lucius married Narcissa Black, became a Death Eater, and had a son named Draco Lucius Malfoy. Draco also became a Death Eater, before he had finished school. He married Astoria Greengrass and had a son named Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy.

Other Malfoy ancestors include Septimus Malfoy who lived in the 18th century, Brutus Malfoy who lived around the 17th century, Nicholas Malfoy who was alive in the 14th century, and Armand Malfoy who lived in the 11th century.
7. You are pretty keen to give Quidditch a go. The Quidditch season at Hogwarts always starts with a game of Slytherin vs Gryffindor. Which of these has NOT been a captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team?

Answer: Lucian Bole

Former captains include Kate Rayknolls, Vicky Bishopper, Robin Higgey, Mark Sommertime, Russell Lucky, Dan Darker, Jess Lafington, Kris Kolumbiko, David Makehay, Mark Overcliff, Winky Crockett, Andrew Snowyowl, Jo King, Rufus Winickus, Jody Jacknife, Stuart Craggy, Steve Laughalot, Emma Vanity, Lucinda Talkalot, and Marcus Flint. Sirius Black's brother Regulus played as Seeker for Slytherin.
8. You walk past the kitchens and notice a group of house elves working there. Which house elf did Harry free from an all-Slytherin family in "Chamber of Secrets"?

Answer: Dobby

Harry freed Dobby by putting his sock in Tom Riddle's diary. Lucius Malfoy (Dobby's master) picked up the diary and threw the sock away. Dobby caught it. He was free. House elves are freed when their master passes them clothes. Winky belonged to the Crouch's but was dismissed at the Quidditch World Cup when she was accused of casting the Dark Mark.

She went to work at Hogwarts with Dobby. Kreacher was the Black family's faithful servant but obeyed Harry after Sirius died because Sirius had no more direct family so gave Kreacher to Harry in his will. Hokey belonged to Hepzibah Smith.
9. Aaah! You just walked through the Slytherin house ghost. Do you know what his name is?

Answer: The Bloody Baron

The Bloody Baron, before he was a ghost, fell in love with Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, the founder of Ravenclaw house. Helena was in Albania and the Bloody Baron was sent by Rowena to find her. He found her and declared his love for her.

She told him she did not return his affections. He flew into a rage and stabbed her dead. He was so distressed at what he had done that he then stabbed himself to death.
10. You are hearing rumours that the Triwizard Tournament is being held again. Eager to find out more, you pick up a book about the subject. One year there were four champions instead of three. Who, from Slytherin, put their name in the Goblet of Fire that year?

Answer: Cassius Warrington

Cassius Warrington (Slytherin), Angelina Johnson (Gryffindor), and Cedric Diggory (Hufflepuff) all put their names in the Goblet of Fire. However the champions were Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons Academy, Viktor Krum from Durmstrang Institute, and Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts School.

They fought dragons, rescued hostages underwater from merpeople, and found their way through a maze. Voldemort made sure Harry won, but Harry and Cedric both grabbed the trophy and portkeyed to a graveyard. Voldemort killed Cedric and fought with Harry, but Harry prevailed.
