Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a pilgrim?

Answer: Someone who goes on a long journey.

The Pilgrims on the Mayflower originally lived in England. They wanted to have their own type of church. They set sail to start their new lives in America.
2. Some businessmen in Holland paid for the Pilgrims to come to America. What did the Pilgrims have to do in return?

Answer: They had to work for the businessmen for seven years.

The deal wasn't very fair, but it was the only way the Pilgrims could afford to cross to America. They had to work sending fur and lumber back to Holland for seven years before they could work for themselves.
3. There were 102 people on the Mayflower. What event added to their number?

Answer: A baby was born. Awww!

A baby was born right there on the Mayflower. Since they were crossing the Atlantic, they named the baby Oceanus.
4. The Pilgrims and the sailors on the Mayflower became great friends.

Answer: False

Many of the Pilgrims did not care the sailors' bad language. Many sailors did not care for the Pilgrims praying and singing. A Pilgrim noted in their journal that the sailors would call them 'glib-gabbety puke-stockings' whenever they became sea sick.
5. What did the Pilgrims take with them on their crossing?

Answer: Only what the entire family could fit into one chest.

That was all they were allowed to have. They had to leave the other things that were special to them behind. What would you pack to start a new life if you could only take a armful of your things?
6. What did the Pilgrims mainly eat on the Mayflower?

Answer: Salted meat and hard biscuits

The meat and biscuits were called salt horse and hard tack. They also had a limited amount of dried peas and beans, and some cheese. Fresh water was very limited, so everyone had to drink beer, even the kids.
7. Where was there to sleep on the Mayflower?

Answer: Floor and hammocks

The Mayflower was actually used to transport wine. It was full of casks, not furs. It was over packed full of people, and there was not much room. A lucky few had hammocks to use, but most just slept on the floor of the deck.
8. By the end of the trip, everyone was smelling pretty bad.

Answer: True

Fresh water was not available for washing. Sometimes they got to rinse off with salt water. They wore the same set of clothes every day for sixty-six days. It is said that the women spent the entire first day on land washing their families' clothes.
9. John and Francis Billington were two mischievous boys who put the entire ship in danger by starting a fire. Where did they start this fire?

Answer: Next to barrels of gun powder.

Luckily, they were caught in time. Otherwise, it would have been the end of the Pilgrims. I bet those boys were in a lot of trouble!
10. Where were the Pilgrims when they finally spotted land?

Answer: Cape Cod

On November 9, 1620 they finally made it to Cape Cod. They landed shortly after. The place they landed is now called Provincetown.
