Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The puppies are being watched by Horace and Saul Badun, two criminal brothers. However, they are easily distracted by what?

Answer: The television

Horace and Saul are obsessed with watching TV, a habit Cadpig has also picked up. There is only one TV in Hell Hall and it is in the warmest room, so the brothers stay in there with all 97 Dalmatian puppies in total darkness except for the TV light. Lucky explains that Horace and Saul are so obsessed with the TV, they treat the puppies very well so they do not disturb their favorite shows. Horace and Saul's obsession allows Pongo and Missus to spend the night in Hell Hall with the puppies, and they do not even notice.
2. What reason does Cruella give to Horace and Saul as to why they must kill the puppies immediately?

Answer: The publicity is getting too much.

The Dearlys advertised a reward for the return of the puppies and Pongo and Missus. The story became a sensation, and Cruella was worried that the publicity would make it too difficult to hide the puppies because everyone in England was trying to find them.

She ordered Horace and Saul to kill them and then skin them so her husband could begin work on the coat. Pongo and Missus believed their puppies would be safe because they were too young to be turned into coats, but Cruella said they could be turned into gloves. Pongo and Missus vow to save all the Dalmatian puppies, not just their own.
3. What is Horace and Saul's lifelong dream?

Answer: To appear on "What's My Crime?"

"What's My Crime?" is a television game show similar to "What's My Line?" only the panelists have to guess each contestant's crime. Horace and Saul long to be on the show but they only pick contestants who have committed unique crimes. They then realize that killing the puppies is unique enough to get on the show, and that eliminates their apprehension in killing them. Pongo, Missus and Lucky are able lead the puppies to safety when Cadpig alerts the brothers that "What's My Crime?" is on the TV, and they wait to kill the dogs until afterward.
4. Who is Tommy Thompson?

Answer: The Colonel's pet

Tommy Thompson is a two year old boy who is the Colonel's pet. Because he is so young, Tommy can communicate with dogs better than he can with people. He lends the Dalmatians his toy wagon for the journey home. The wagon is used to carry Cadpig because she is too small to make the journey by foot.

The Colonel notes that Tommy's name and address is on the side of the wagon and Tommy would appreciate it if the wagon was returned to him when the journey is complete.
5. Although much talk is made of dogs biting humans in the novel, who are the only two dogs to bite someone?

Answer: Lucky and Colonel

Pongo and Missus want to bite and kill Cruella for kidnapping their puppies, but Missus mentions that dogs should never bite humans, no matter how horrible they are. Pongo responds that Cruella is hardly human. But they never attack her. Pongo also wants to bite the boy who threw the rock at him, but Missus says not to because the boy is too young to know what he is doing.

Lucky nibbles on Cruella's ear soon after he is born. He says Cruella tastes hot from all the pepper she eats and says no dog should ever bite her. The only other instance of a dog biting humans is when Colonel bites Horace and Saul to prevent them from chasing after the puppies. Colonel says he moved so fast, the brothers did not know what happened to them and promotes himself to Brigadier General for his bravery.
6. How do the Dalmatians disguise themselves on the return trip home so they will not be recognized?

Answer: Cover themselves with soot

The Collie the Dalmatians meet at the bakery informs them that the story of their going missing is very well known, and they are likely to be spotted in an open field. Pongo gets the idea to cover themselves with soot to hide the fact that they are Dalmatians and would look like black labs instead. Collie says the covered dogs do not look like black labs, but no longer look like Dalmatians.
7. After leaving the Collie's bakery, the Dalmatians head for another bakery in a different village. However, they never arrive because of what obstacle?

Answer: A fire

The Collie told the Dalmatians that the bakery in the next village would have supplies. However, they discover the bakery has caught on fire and all the food the dogs collected burned. The Dalmatians are then left without shelter and food, and it begins to snow. Meanwhile, Pongo sees Cruella enjoying the fire and realize she is in hot pursuit of them.
8. How do the Dalmatians return to London?

Answer: By moving truck

With no food and shelter after the fire in the village, the dogs were forced continue on their journey. It began to snow, which covered the soot and gave them white spots. With Cruella chasing them, Pongo led the dogs into a woods where they narrowly escaped a Romani caravan and eventually found a Staffordshire Terrier whose pets were moving men.

He let all the dogs ride back to London in the back of the truck. Cruella was behind the truck on the road but overtook it with her erratic driving and never noticed the dogs were in front of her the whole time.
9. How do the Dalmatians and the cat get revenge on Cruella?

Answer: They destroy her furs.

Cruella's husband is a furrier who had previously supplied her with many fur coats. Upon arriving back in London, Cruella's mistreated cat and the Dalmatians tear up her furs and coats while she and her husband are out having dinner. Because the furs were not paid for, the de Vil's are ruined financially. Mr. de Vil is forced to move to America and go into the plastic raincoat business. Meanwhile, Cruella's black hair turned white and her white hair turned green. Cruella is not punished in a legal sense. Mr. Dearly saw Tommy's address on the cart as being from Dympling, and he knows Cruella has a home there. He suspects her of the crime but does not pursue any legal action.

It was a big risk for the Dalmatians to go into the de Vil's London home to destroy the furs, but Pongo did so because he wanted to prevent Cruella from turning any more dogs into coats in the future.
10. True or False: Some of the puppies rescued by Pongo and Missus were Perdita's.

Answer: True

It never dawned on Pongo or Missus that Perdita's puppies might be among the puppies Cruella had. Cruella had purchased all the puppies from sellers except for the ones belonging to Pongo and his wife. But Perdita recognized them right away. The Dearlys keep all 100 Dalmatians and purchase the spacious Hell Hall in the country to live in.

They are soon joined by Cruella's cat and Prince, Perdita's husband.
