The mysterious sweatered scout thought this was a bad reason as a person couldn't possibly be 'xylophone.' He said that there was a better word, called 'xenial', which means welcoming to foreigners.

While Quigley was in the secret passageway he heard his house burning down. After the fire was over he tried to lift the trap door but it wouldn't budge.

He followed the secret passage, and he eventually got to the house of Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, the Baudelaire children's former guardian.

Sunny THINKS she is using a cigarette to signal the Baudelaires because, like everyone at the summit of Mount Fraught, she had been told that it was a cigarette when it was in fact it was a Verdant Flammable Device.

Googoogaga, one of Sunny's baby-talk words, meant: "I am going to pretend that I'm just a helpless baby." In response to this Hugo said that she was just a helpless baby. This is very good use of irony.

Answer: The olives

The very fresh dill told you that there was a message; the jams told you to whom the message was being sent and that the addressee's initials were JS. The amount of olives told you which day, Sunday being one olive, Monday being two and so on.
The mustard would refer to a poem, "The Garden of Proserpine" by Algernon Charles Swinburne.
The lemon juice and the pickle remained undeciphered.

The initials in the Jam were JS, which refers to a number of people in the series, including Justice Strauss, Jerome Squalor and Jacques Snicket; ES refers to Esme Squalor; CO refers to Count Olaf and LS refers to Lemony Snicket.

Down Syndrome and locked-in syndromes are serious mental conditions.
Stockholm syndrome refers to hostages making friends with their captors and Mount Fraught Syndrome refers to hostages not becoming friends with their captors.

The Man with a beard but no hair and the woman with hair but no beard thought that they were mammals when Klaus pointed out that they were birds. The Eagles put a net on the summit and most of the snow scouts were caught in this net.

The clue is the mushrooms on top of the rock. This is a hard one to find because it doesn't seem like an alien object. In every other book the object is slightly out of place.
