Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Placental mammals have live babies, for which they care. Which of these is in this group?

Answer: All of these

This group includes all animals that bear live young, and feed them milk. They usually have hair, fur or some similar covering, and have a bony skeleton.
2. Marsupials are mammals with a pouch. Most are found in Australia/New Guinea, But North America has one species. Which of these is a marsupial?

Answer: Opossum

The best-known marsupials are the kangaroo, koala and wallaby. When the young (joeys) are born, they spend the first part of their life in the pouch, attached to the nipple through which they feed on milk.
Raccoons, beavers and groundhogs are placental mammals.
3. These animals, called monotremes, are unique in that they are mammals that lay eggs. Which of these is a monotreme?

Answer: Echidna

The echidna, or spiny anteater, is found only in Australia/New Guinea. The only other monotreme is the platypus. They lay eggs, which when hatched, they feed on milk, like all mammals. The others are all placentals.
4. Birds, the direct descendants of dinosaurs, all have feathers, and all lay hard-shelled eggs. However, they don't all fly. Which of these birds can fly?

Answer: Crow

Flying birds have very light bones, which makes flight easier (not to mention the wings, of course!). This helps them escape predators. Penguins are excellent swimmers, kiwis hide a lot and dodos? Well, the dodo is extinct. Maybe flying would have helped there.
5. The next group are the reptiles. Which is the odd one out in this group?

Answer: Snakes

Snakes are the only group of the choices to completely contain animals without legs. If you thought 'venomous', some snakes aren't venomous and some lizards are. One feature that reptiles have in common is a 3-chambered heart, unlike the 4 chambers in birds and mammals.
6. Amphibians live in water (usually as infants) and on land (as adults). Which of these is an amphibian?

Answer: All of these

Amphibians lay eggs, usually lots of them. The eggs hatch into tadpoles which swim around, gradually losing their tails and growing legs. Then it's onto land to live, returning to the water to lay eggs.
7. Fish live almost always in water, salt or fresh. Which of these lives in fresh water?

Answer: Trout

Fish have gills instead of lungs, and so extract the oxygen they need from the water. Some fish, like the salmon, breed (spawn) in fresh water, but spend most of their lives in the oceans.
8. Although most fish have true bones, some do not. Which of these fish does not have true bones?

Answer: Shark

Sharks are 'cartilaginous' meaning their skeletons are not real bones. I know we eat tuna, sardines and herrings from tins with no worry about bones, but the processing has softened them or removed them.
9. Arthropods are animals with jointed legs. Which of these is an arthropod?

Answer: All of these

This animal group is one of Earth's most diverse. Crabs (and lobsters and prawns) are crustaceans. Spiders (and scorpions) are arachnids, while wasps (and many more like flies, butterflies) are insects. Although different from each other in some ways, they all have jointed legs.
10. Molluscs are soft-bodied animals. Which of these is classified as a mollusc?

Answer: Snail

Tricky? Although snails have a shell, they are molluscs like the octopus, slug and oyster. Jellyfish are coelenterates (have stinging cells), earthworms are annelids (segmented worms) and kittens are mammals, of course.
