Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On his 13th birthday, Harry received some presents from his friends. Which of the following was not a gift that Harry received that day?

Answer: A Firebolt

Hagrid sends Harry the "Monster Book of Monsters", which is the text book required for his Care of Magical Creatures class, which Hagrid is teaching this term. Hermione sends Harry the Broomstick Servicing Kit, which ironically, foreshadows the outcome of his broom. Ron sends Harry a Sneakoscope, which is a device that stands up, spins, whistles, and lights up when someone untrustworthy is around.

The Firebolt is not sent to Harry until Christmas time, with no note depicting who it is from.
2. When is the first time Harry sees a picture of Sirius Black?

Answer: On a Muggle television news report.

Harry first sees Sirius Black on a news report on Muggle television, although he does not know who he is. Harry does see a picture of Sirius in the Daily Prophet while riding the Knight Bus, and Stan Shunpike tells Harry a little bit about Sirius. Harry arrived at the Leaky Cauldron after riding the Knight Bus, and Cornelius Fudge never gave Harry a photo of Sirius.
3. While shopping in Diagon Alley, Ron and Hermione walk into Magical Menagerie, the pet store. Inside, an animal tries to attack Ron's rat, Scabbers. What is the name of this animal?

Answer: Crookshanks

As Ron and Hermione enter the store, Crookshanks (a cat) tries to attack Scabbers. Instead of buying an owl, as she had initially intended to, Hermione buys Crookshanks instead.

Errol is the name of an owl owned by the Weasleys, Pidwidgeon is the owl that Sirius Black gives Ron, and Padfoot is a nickname of Sirius Black. None of these attacked Scabbers in Diagon Alley.
4. While riding the train to Hogwarts, a prison guard from Azkaban (known as a Dementor) enters Harry's compartment, making him pass out. What does Professor Lupin give the children to counteract the Dementor's effect on the students?

Answer: He gives them chocolate to eat.

After Harry awakens from passing out, Lupin hands him some chocolate and tells him to eat it, as it will help.

Lupin never tells the children to lay down and get sleep, nor does he hand out Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans; however, I hear Dumbledore had an earwax flavored one once!

Thinking of a happy memory is necessary to perform the Patronus Charm, the spell which repels Dementors.
5. In Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Lupin presents the students with an opportunity to defend themselves against a Boggart. Since Boggarts transform themselves into the worst fear of whomever they are facing, Lupin tells them to think of something funny and say what?

Answer: Riddikulus

The charm used to repel a Boggart is Riddikulus. As the Boggart transforms into your worst fear, thinking of something funny and using the charm will change the Boggart into the funny thing you are thinking of.

When Lupin mentions the Riddikulus charm, Malfoy states that the class is ridiculous. Expecto Patronum is the spell used to repel Dementors. Squibilicious is not a spell; however, you might call Filch this.
6. Which is not true of the Marauder's Map?

Answer: Harry stole the map from Argus Filch's office.

Harry acquired the map from Fred and George Weasley, who stole the map from Filch's office.

To activate the map, you would touch the map with your wand and say "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good", and to deactivate the map and make it look like a blank piece of parchment, you would touch the map with your wand and say "mischief managed".

The map shows seven secret passages into the castle, four of which Filch knows about.
7. The Marauder's Map refers to R. J. Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter as four other names. What are these names?

Answer: Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs

When activated, the map reveals the following:

"Messrs. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs
Purveyors of Aids to Magical Mischief-Makers
are proud to present
the Marauder's Map"

The four names on the map are indications of the animals the four men transform into. Being an animangus, Peter Pettigrew can turn himself into a rat (wormtail). Sirius can transform himself into a dog (padfoot), and James Potter could transform himself into a stag (prongs). Lupin, while not an animangus like his friends, was a werewolf, hence the nickname Moony.
8. Professor Snape fills in for Professor Lupin, and gets to teach a Defense Against the Dark Arts class. He instructs the students to write an essay. What is the topic of the essay?

Answer: Werewolves

Professor Lupin misses class due to being sick. Snape comes and teaches the class about werewolves, even though this is a topic that is supposed to be discussed later on in the term. He then instructs the students to write an essay on the recognition and ways of defeating a werewolf. This is when Hermione first realizes that Professor Lupin is a werewolf.
9. Professor Lupin decides to teach Harry the Patronus Charm. To do this, Harry and Lupin meet and practice the charm in the History of Magic classroom, on one of the Dementors sent to Hogwarts by the Ministry of Magic.

Answer: False

Professor Lupin does meet with Harry to practice the Patronus charm in the History of Magic classroom; however, they practice the charm on a Boggart, not a real Dementor.
10. The first time Harry successfully produces a Patronus, what is the memory he uses?

Answer: The day he learned he was a wizard and would be leaving the Dursleys

Harry tried a few different memories before getting the Patronus to come out of his wand; however, none of them were powerful or happy enough. Once he thought of the day he was told he was a wizard, and that he'd be leaving the Dursleys' house, he was able to cast a Patronus that repelled the Boggart (which transformed into a Dementor).
11. A black dog grabs Ron and drags him into a hole underneath the Whomping Willow. Harry and Hermione try to follow, but are stopped by the Whomping Willow. To gain safe access to the hole under the tree, what happens so Harry and Hermione can access the tunnel and follow it to the Shrieking Shack?

Answer: Crookshanks presses a knot in the Whomping Willow's trunk

Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, runs up, dodges the Whomping Willows branches, and presses a knot on the tree's trunk, which immobilizes the Whomping Willows branches. Harry and Hermione then go into the tunnel beneath the tree and follow it to the Shrieking Shack.
12. The Dementors can administer a fate far worse than death, where they suck someone's soul out! What is this known as?

Answer: A Dementor's Kiss

The Dementor's kiss is used as the most severe form of punishment at Azkaban. It is said that a Dementor's kiss is far worse than death itself, as without a soul, your body continues on acting as an empty shell with no memory or recognition of yourself.
13. As punishment for injuring Draco Malfoy, Buckbeak was sentenced to death. He was to be executed by the newly appointed executioner: Stan Shunpike.

Answer: False

Buckbeak was sentenced to be executed by an executioner named Macnair. Stan Shunpike was the conductor of the Knight Bus. Macnair was appointed by the Ministry of Magic as the executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures.
14. What is the magical item Hermione receives at the beginning of the novel, that she uses throughout the whole year to take multiple classes at the same time?

Answer: A Time-Turner

Hermione receives the Time-Turner from Professor McGonagall in the beginning of the book. Hermione receives this so that she can attend more classes (more than one at the same time) than would normally be possible. She is given this item under the instructions to use it only for taking extra classes, and that she is never seen using it.
15. When Harry and Hermione go back in time, they are told by Dumbledore that more than one innocent life can be saved. What are the names of the innocent lives that Dumbledore is referring to, that Harry and Hermione could save?

Answer: Sirius Black and Buckbeak

By going back in time, Harry and Hermione are able to save both Buckbeak and Sirius Black. They save Buckbeak from an unjust execution, and they use Buckbeak to help Sirius escape imprisonment. R.J. Lupin, at this time, is currently roaming the Forbidden forest, Ron Weasley is in the hospital wing, and Rubeus Hagrid is with Dumbledore and the Minister of Magic, awaiting the execution of Buckbeak.
16. When Harry and Hermione go back in time to save the two innocent lives, Sirius Black is being held captive in the only prison cell in Hogwarts, which is located in the Northwest Tower.

Answer: False

This is false. Sirius Black is being held captive in Professor Flitwick's office. Once Harry and Hermione save Buckbeak, they fly him up to the West Tower, open a window in Professor Flitwick's office, and free Sirius Black.
17. Who eventually signs the Hogsmeade permission slip for Harry, so he can attend outings at Hogsmeade?

Answer: Sirius Black, after he escapes Hogwarts

Sirius Black sends Harry a signed permission slip for Hogsmeade after his escape from Hogwarts. Sirius sent Harry the slip, and a note telling Harry that he is safe and it was he who bought Harry the Firebolt for Christmas.
18. Whom did Harry believe cast the Patronus (of a stag) that saved him and Sirius from the Dementors?

Answer: James Potter

Right before Harry passed out, he saw a Patronus of a stag appear and repel the Dementors. Harry believed this was his father; however, as we find out later, Harry used the memory of his father to cast the Patronus himself, repelling the Dementors away.
19. At the end of the term, Harry, Ron, and Hermione all have passed all of their classes.

Answer: True

At the end of the term, all three students had passed all of their classes. Even though she passed everything this term, Hermione dropped Muggle Studies and Divination, so she gave back the Time-Turner to Professor McGonagall.
20. Which of the following was Sirius Black not accused of before he was sent to Azkaban?

Answer: Killing James and Lily Potter

Sirius Black was accused of killing Peter Pettigrew, twelve Muggles, and being a supporter of Lord Voldemort. However, he was never accused of killing James and Lily Potter. He was accused of betraying them to Lord Voldemort, who actually killed them.
