Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was painted on Peter Fonda's motorcycle helmet in the movie "Easy Rider"?

Answer: Stars and Stripes

"Easy Rider", 1969, was an American film, directed by Dennis Hopper and starring Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson. The film was a touchstone for a generation as it explores American society, the tensions, and problems of American teenagers in the 1960s, the hippie movement, drug use, and community lifestyle.

In the film, two bikers, after having received a lot of money from the sale of cocaine, head from Los Angeles to New Orleans to enjoy the Mardi Gras festival. The money from the drug sale was stuffed into a plastic tube hidden inside the Stars and Stripes-painted fuel tank of a California-style chopper belonging to Peter Fonda's character, Wyatt. On his helmet, there were the same stars and stripes as on the fuel tank.
2. How does James Bond like his martinis?

Answer: Shaken, not stirred

James Bond is a fictional British Secret Service agent created by the writer Ian Fleming in 1953. James Bond became known as 007 (double-oh-seven) and appeared in numerous other media, especially films. James Bond was bestowed with the characteristics of his creator: the same golf handicap, the same brand of toiletries, fondness for scrambled eggs, experiences in espionage, etc.

According to Andrew Lycett, the biographer of Ian Fleming, the writer preferred his martinis shaken, because he thought that this better preserved the original flavor of the drink. Then, like his creator, James Bond prefers his cocktails shaken, not stirred. With stirring, ice merely chills and dilutes the cocktail. When the martini and ice are shaken, the drink is aerated with small bubbles giving the cocktail a cloudy appearance.
3. If a MUKLUK was in front of an Eskimo what would he do?

Answer: Wear it

"Mukluk", also known as kamik, is a type of soft high-top boot, traditionally made with sealskin (which is waterproof) or reindeer skin typically used by indigenous people from Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and eastern Siberia. The term mukluk is currently used to refer to any soft boot suitable for cold weather, which can be manufactured with traditional or modern materials. The traditional mukluk is a very light shoe when compared to, for instance, U.S. Marine extreme-cold boots.

The word "mukluk", originating from the Yup'ik language, comes from maklak, the bearded seal (from whose skin the soles of mukluk are made) and is also the main source of materials for making indigenous clothing.
4. Who was Playboy's first centerfold?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

"Playboy" is an American men's entertainment and lifestyle magazine founded in 1953 by Hugh Hefner and associates, that played an important role in the sexual revolution. Although the magazine publishes monthly interviews with public characters and short stories by novelists, it became famous for its centerfolds of nude and semi-nude models, named "Playmates".

In December 1953, the first issue of the magazine "Playboy" was published. It had as its centerfold a nude of Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962), an actress, model, and singer and at this time a rising star. She appeared in Playboy as the "Sweetheart of the Month". Although the term "Playmate" was introduced in the second number Marilyn is considered the first playmate.
5. Another day I went to a restaurant where, among other things, I was served pasta with wagyu ragu. What kind of animal does this meat wagyu come from?

Answer: Cattle

"Wagyu" is a Japanese beef cattle brand, where "Wo" means Japanese and "gyu" means cow. It's the collective name for the main Japanese brand. The Wagyu originated from draft animals, selected for their physical vigor. The selection resulted in individuals with a higher intramuscular fat index.

The meat, due to its higher fat content, has a marbled appearance, is very tender, and has a unique flavor. In Japan, Wagyu is considered a national treasure. Currently, Wagyu is raised and bred with varying degrees of purity in various countries. Currently, Japan is the biggest producer followed by Australia and the United States. Wagyu beef is finding its way into the menus of gourmet cooks and fine restaurants.
6. What sport is known as toxophily?

Answer: Archery

"Toxophily" is another term for archery and a person who practices toxophily is called a toxophilite. Toxophily or archery is the practice or sport of using a bow to shoot arrows, historically used for hunting and combat. Currently, it is mainly a recreational activity or a competitive sport. The person who practices this activity is called an archer, bowman, or toxophilite.

Toxophily and toxophilite appeared in the first English language book on archery "Toxophilus"(1545) by Roger Ascham. Both terms are derived from the Greek words "toxikos" meaning "bow" and "philos" meaning "love". It is interesting to note that "toxicology" is also derived from the terms "toxikon" that means "arrow poison", and "-logia", "the science of".

8. What did singer Tina Turner say about her own life, in the documentary, "Tina"?

Answer: It wasn't a good life

Tina Turner, née Anna Mae Bullock (1939-2023), known as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", began her highly successful career in the 1950s with the duo, at this time, husband and wife, "Ike & Tina Turner". This partnership lasted until 1976 when the couple divorced and Tina started her solo career, with great success. In July 2000, at a concert in Zürich, Tina announced that she would retire. After this date, she made some appearances, published books, and starred in the documentary film "Tina" produced by HBO, released in 2021.

The documentary "Tina" traces her life and career, in which she describes her life as "abusive" and her happiness with her second husband, Erwin Bach. However, about her life, Tina stated: "It wasn't a good life. The good did not balance the bad". In fact, she had several traumas in her childhood, including an abusive first marriage, pressure from her artistic career, and the death of her son. 9. Joseph P. L. Laroche was one of the approximately 1500 victims of the Titanic. Which of the following was he known for?

Answer: He and his two daughters were the only Afro-descendant passengers

Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche (1886-1912) was a black Haitian man, who studied and graduated in engineering in France and married a white French woman named Juliette Lafarge. Due to racial discrimination, he was unable to find a stable job in France and decided to return to Haiti. Laroche, his pregnant wife, and their two daughters, Simone and Louise, would travel first class on the "SS France", but the line's strict policy regarding children caused them to transfer their booking to Titanic's second class.

The family boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg on April 10, 1912. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank; Joseph did not survive and his body was never identified. He was the only black passenger to die in the sinking. His wife and their two children escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by the RMS Carpathia. The three survivors returned to France where Joseph Jr. was born. Louise Laroche, Joseph's daughter, died in 1998 as one of the last survivors of the crash.
10. The German Robert Schumann gained international recognition as an excellent pianist.

Answer: False

False. Robert Alexander Schumann (1810 - 1856) was a German Romantic composer known mainly for his works for piano, song (lieder), and orchestral music, and also for publishing an important Journal for Music. Clara Wieck, a talented pianist, who was his wife, encouraged him to compose not only for piano but also symphonies. Schumann had a number of mental health problems that for a long time were mistakenly attributed to syphilis. He had periods of depression which prevented him from composing and others of euphoria in which he produced countless pieces.

Schumann could have become an accomplished pianist but at the age of 22, he started to complain about the condition in his right hand which numbed and stiffened his fingers, which ironically only happened when he was playing. Today it is known that Schumann had a form of "focal dystonia", which is restricted to a group of muscles, and that when it is related to the patient's activity it is called "professional dystonia", triggered by the repetition of a movement. This late diagnosis was made by researchers who analyzed, among other things, his diaries and his correspondence with his mother. Currently, this condition can be reversed with surgery and the placement of a brain stimulator.
