Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following represents a fear of spiders and/or scorpions?

Answer: Arachnophobia

People who suffer arachnophobia will not just have a fear of spiders (or scorpions) but will also feel uncomfortable where there are signs of spiders such as spider-webs. Some see this as an instinctive response to survival and by removing the presence of spiders also remove the risk of being bitten and the continued survival of one's self.

Pteronarcophobia is the fear of flies.
Melissophobia is the fear of bees.
Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes.
2. Who was the star, playing the role of Johnny Rico, in the 1997 sci-fi film 'Starship Troopers'?

Answer: Casper Van Dien

The film follows the exploits of Johnny Rico during an interstellar war between mankind and a species of bugs called 'Arachnids'. Johnny rises through the ranks of recruit to officer during the film. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1998 and grossed in excess of $129 million world wide.

Casper Van Dien had a run of small roles until 1996 when he played the role of King Tal in 'Beastmaster III: The Eye of Braxus'. 'Starship Troopers' became his first headlining role.
3. Mandible and maxilla are what type of structures in a mammal's body?

Answer: Jaws

The mandible is movable and is better known as your bottom jaw. The maxilla, or upper jaw, is part of the structure of the skull. One problem that can occur is a condition called TMJ, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as 'clicky jaw'.
4. What links a cathedral city in the north of England, the 16th United States President and a brand of motor car?

Answer: Lincoln

Lincoln Cathedral is a gothic building, commissioned by William the Conqueror. A number of famous people are interred within its walls, including Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster and numerous past Bishops of Lincoln. It is significant as one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta is owned by the Cathedral. The Lincoln automobile is produced by the Ford Motor Company; and Abraham Lincoln was president of the USA from March 1861 until his death in 1865.
5. In cricket, what is a cross batted shot played from above the chest to the leg-side commonly known as?

Answer: Hook

Named because the batsman is 'hooking the ball around' so that it travels (generally) in an arc behind square of the wicket. It can be played in the air or along the ground. It can also be played off both the back foot or the front foot. Playing the shot off the back foot allows the batsman a fraction more time to complete the shot. A similar shot that is played from below the chest is called a pull shot. This shot is more often played in front of square of the wicket rather than behind.
6. With which city do you associate the following: Isar, Beer Hall Putsch, Olympics, BMW automobiles?

Answer: Munich

Munich is the third largest city in Germany behind Berlin and Hamburg. It is the capital of Bavaria in the south-east of the country, on the river Isar. A prosperous city, it is the headquarters for global corporations such as BMW, Siemens, MAN, Linde and Allianz. Famous for the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

Despite over 80% of the city being bombed in WWII, it rebuilt itself to be an 'alpha' city and hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics.
7. What is an arranged combat engagement between two people with identical weapons that can be traced back to medieval times?

Answer: Duel

A duel is an arranged combat engagement between two people with identical weapons that can be traced back to the judicial duels fought by knights and squires in medieval times. The rules were governed by a Code of Chivalry. Initially swords were used and later pistols.

The aim was not to kill an opponent but to demonstrate one was willing to die for one's honour. Duelling fell out of favour in Europe and the USA by the late 19th century, but interestingly, it was public opinion rather than legislation that caused the decline.
8. In what year did Joe DiMaggio start his 56 game hitting streak?

Answer: 1941

In baseball, the number of consecutive official games in which a player appears and gets at least one base hit is called a hitting streak. Joe DiMaggio, known as the 'Yankee Clipper', is considered one of the greatest baseballers to ever take the field. Playing for the New York Yankees he started his streak in May of 1941 and it went through to July 16 in the same year. It set a new standard for the league and the record still remained at the turn of the new century.
9. In the 70s, Chevrolet made Vegas, Ford made Pintos. What subcompacts did AMC manufacture?

Answer: Gremlins

The 70s were a volatile period for American automobile manufacturers. Because of the oil crisis, the demand for smaller US cars was high. AMC shortened the full size Hornet to create the Gremlin, which had a distinctive cutoff rear end. Despite criticism, the car was a sales success over its six year lifespan. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both drove them in the seventies.
10. Now, who is the common bond?

Answer: Steven Spielberg

All of the titles above represent a film that Steven Spielberg has been involved in some aspect. He was at the helm as director for 'Duel' (1971)(Q7), 'Jaws' (1975)(Q3), '1941' (1979)(Q8), 'Hook'(Q5) (1991), 'Munich' (2005)(Q6) and the wonderful 'Lincoln' (Q4) in 2012.

He helped out as executive producer for 'Arachnophobia' (Q1) in 1990, 'Gremlins' (Q9) in 1984 and 'Casper' (Q2) in 1995.
