Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I suffer from ranidaphobia. I jump out of my skin and run screaming for cover when I see what?

Answer: Frogs

Yes - frogs! The word comes from the Latin name for the frog family, Rana.
2. What might I do with a Trakehner?

Answer: Ride it

The Trakehner is a breed of horse which originated in Trakehnen in East Prussia. The main stud was established in 1732 and since then thoroughbred and Arabian bloodlines have been added to give a modern horse which is known for its stable temperament (no pun intended!) and excellent pacers.

It is widely used as a competition horse and excels at dressage. There is also a cross-country fence known as a Trakehner which is a pole over a ditch - this might be jumped by a Trakehner horse!
3. Oh look! A large number of goldfish all together. What might you call them if you are clever and know the collective noun?

Answer: A troubling of goldfish

This may come from the Latin turba which means a crowd. I think it's an interesting collective noun and nobody really knows why it is used. Some people say it's a glint of goldfish but this is an alternative derived from medieval bestiaries (source: Whitaker's Pocket Almanack published 1999).
4. A saltire is what?

Answer: A diagonal cross

This comes from heraldry - an example is the cross of St Andrew used on the flag of Scotland. It takes the form of X rather than +.
5. I'm on holiday in Ecuador (lucky me!). If I want to buy some gifts to take home with me which of these currencies do I use to pay?

Answer: US Dollar

The currency used to be the sucre (same as the French word for sugar)and made up of 100 centavos but it changed in September 2000 to the US dollar. At the time Panama was the only other country using the US dollar as official currency.
6. We're all familiar with the usual Roman gods and goddesses but some are less well-known. Feronia is a goddess, but what is she the goddess of?

Answer: Fertility and Good Harvests

Her feast day was on November 15th and she was also associated with markets and trading.
7. I have a friend called Gerald. What does his name mean?

Answer: Spear-wielding

This comes from both the Germanic and Teutonic root.
8. Does the long-eared owl found in Britain really have long ears?

Answer: No

The "ears" are tufts of feathers with the actual ear openings being at the sides of its head. The opening on the left is slightly behind that on the right and the time lag between sound reaching the ears helps the owl to pinpoint prey.
9. Oh my goodness, I have epistaxis! Whatever should I do? What on earth IS epistaxis anyway?

Answer: A nose bleed

It's the medical word for a nose bleed. From the Greek epistazein which means to shed in drops. What should I do? Well, tip my head back, maybe pinch the bridge of my nose but mostly just wait for it to stop! Unless I have an illness or I am taking drugs which stop clotting it should stop on its own.
10. My friend Gerald has a horse which crib-bites. I like horses but this is a bad habit. What does it mean?

Answer: The horse bites its manger

This is known as a vice. Horses which do this will grab hold of anything really but especially their feed bowls (mangers), stable doors and fences. Some then suck in air as well (wind-sucking). Some people consider it to be a danger to the horse and others not and it is thought to be possibly brought on by boredom. Most horses that do this are worth less money!
