Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Raskolnikov hoping to avoid at the very beginning of 'Crime and Punishment'?

Answer: his landlady

And avoid her he did. This time.
2. UK Politics: Who was the first Labour Party leader to win consecutive terms as British Prime Minister?

Answer: Clement Attlee

Attlee won in 1945 and 1950. He had also called a General Election in 1951, but he lost.

Tony Blair accomplished this feat after him. He was originally elected by a landslide in 1997, and followed it up with a slightly-smaller-slide in 2001.
3. Who commanded armies in Egypt and Italy, before rising to become First Consul and then Emperor of his adopted nation?

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

Ol' Bony originally hailed from Corsica, which was under French control at the time, and swiftly rose to become leader of the French due to his organisational ability, energy, and military successes (and the political machinations of his brother Lucien).
4. Manchester United won the European Cup in 1999, beating Bayern Munich 2-1 in an amazing final. But who did they beat in the semi-final?

Answer: Juventus

1-1 after the first leg, the second leg in Turin was another stunner. The Italians go 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes, and the tie looks over. United's players deign to disagree, and fight back to win 3-2 (4-3 on aggregate).
5. This substance, added to water in some areas of the UK, is supposed to harden teeth.

Answer: fluoride

Fluorine is a poisonous gas, magnesium is naturally present in the water table. I just made up 'colgatium' (but I'd guess you'd guessed).
6. What was the name of the gloomy donkey in Winnie-the-Pooh?

Answer: Eeyore

If his favorite food is thistles then no wonder he's generally a little miffed.
7. In 1943, due to player shortages, the Philadelphia Eagles merged temporarily with another team, forming the 'Phil-Pitt Steagles'. What was the other team's more usual name?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

Whyfore the player shortages? Well, there was something of a worldwide armed conflict going on...
8. According to the Warren Commission, what make of gun was responsible for the death of President Kennedy?

Answer: Mannlicher-Carcano

There is a little speculation as to whether such a sniping feat was possible using the Mannlicher-Carcano, which took a fair amount of time to reload. OK, there's rather more than a 'little' speculation.
9. 'Obsidian' is

Answer: a dark volcanic glass.

It looks like coal until you hold it up to a light, whereupon it begins to glow in a manner not unlike that of a golden version of ET's chest. Most impressive. Oh, and the Aztecs used it to make knives.
10. Finally, although I've resisted the temptation to do a 'Simpsons' quiz, I couldn't stop myself asking this question:- what does Moe the bartender give as his religion?

Answer: Snake Handler

"Sorry, Homer, I was born a Snake Handler, and I'll die a Snake Handler."
