Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which year did the era of couch potatoes begin, with the first wireless remote control device for televisions?

Answer: 1955

The first remote control devices created were for the military during World War I. In the 1940s, wired remote controls were developed to open garage doors. In 1950, the 'Lazy Bone' was invented to control a television signal, but had a bulky cable attached to it.

The Flash-matic, invented in 1955 was the first wireless remote created by Zenith Corporation, but on bright sun-filled days, the television would do things on its own. The following year, Zenith introduced the "Space Command" wireless remote control, which would use ultrasonic waves to control televisions throughout the rest of the century.
2. In which year did the first Lincoln Head penny appear in circulation, in honor of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln?

Answer: 1909

The first Lincoln penny was stamped in 1909. It had his face on the front and a Wheathead design on the back of it. Those pennies were made from 1909-1958. In 1959, the penny was altered to a new backside design depicting the Lincoln Memorial. In the history of U.S. coin money, Lincoln's penny was the first common coin to have the head of a President facing to the right. With nickels, dimes, quarters, and 50 cent pieces, all the Presidents faced to the left.
3. Which of the following is a household device also named a rheostat?

Answer: Light dimmer switch

The common term for a rheostat is a dimmer switch. Other examples in the house of a rheostat are volume control knobs, temperature-controllers on ovens, etc. A rheostat variably controls the amount of electrical current that flows through a device. The more the knob is turned up, the more current is allowed to flow to it. Without realizing it, most people have operated a rheostat before they reached the age of 10.

These also control the speed of train sets, slot cars, and other childhood electronic devices.
4. Most people take their refrigerator for granted. In which year was the first practical refrigerator invented?

Answer: 1834

It was not invented by Doc Emmitt Brown in the movie, "Back to the Future III", but by Jacob Perkins. Perkins modified some ideas from an 1805 invention by Oliver Evans, an American inventor. Perkins used compressed ether to create the cold air. Ether was also used at that time to anesthetize medical patients.

In 1844, a physician named John Gorrie, made ice from this refrigerator to cool down yellow fever patients. Later instead of ether, inventors tried using toxic gases as substitutes such as ammonia and sulfur dioxide, until many deaths occurred due to this in the 1920s. Freon was later introduced.
5. Millions of people everyday place a small dot over an "i" while writing, without any thought to this feat. What is this small dot placed over the letter called?

Answer: Tittle

A tittle is defined as a small mark or dot in punctuation. Another letter of the alphabet that uses a tittle is the letter 'j'.
6. When displaying a United States flag in a fixed position (not waving), in which direction must the union (blue background with stars) face?

Answer: To the north or east

The flag will always point to the right or left depending on which side of the flag that you are standing. To fly a U.S. upside down signifies a distress situation. Proper protocol would display the flag's union pointing towards the north. When it cannot be displayed with the union pointing to the north, then it can then be hanging whereas the union points to the east.

These both apply to hanging a flag horizontally or vertically in a permanent position.
7. If you have ever seen a pictus cat, you would have seen which of the following?

Answer: A spotted catfish

A pictus cat is a tropical fish found in many home aquariums. The actual given name of the fish is a Pimelodella. It is silvery-white in color with black spots. This type of fish is not compatible with the Cichlid family of fish, and results in many confrontations in this usual calm setting.
8. Who wrote the infamous song, "Put the Lime in the Coconut", produced in 1971?

Answer: Harry Nilsson

Produced by Richard Perry under the EMI Blackwood Music label, this eternally uncategorized song was written and sung by Harry Nilsson. Some of the lyrics are:
Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another, she paid it for a lime.
She put the lime in the coconut, and drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut, and drank them both up
She put the lime in the coconut,
Called the doctor, woke him up, and said,
"Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?
I say, Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take,
I say, Doctor, to relieve this belly ache?"
Etc. A real issue is to keep this song out of one's head once they get started with it.
9. If you were taking the medication allopurinol, which of the following symptoms would you be taking this for?

Answer: Gout or high uric acid levels

Allopurinol is used in patients with a high level of urea, or uric acid in their system. This results in calcium (like ground glass) deposits in the joints, which usually begins in the lower extremities. The myth of gout in the past has been an alcoholic disease, but researchers have found that high contents of uric acid in one's system can be the result of many other factors. High intake of red meats and shellfish can also be a large contributor to this condition, in addition to the kidneys not removing it from your system. Allopurinol is also used to help break up kidney stones.

A simple blood or urine test will show the level of uric acid in the system. While the normal range of a uric acid level fluctuates between 1.0 to 3.0, a person who suffers from gout, will experience ranges of 7.0 and even higher.

While aspirins and anti-inflammatory medications are often prescribed for the pain, this does not lower the uric levels as allopurinol might.
10. Which of the following Major League pitching greats, had never won a Cy Young Award in their career?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

The others listed have all won at least three Cy Young Awards. The Cy Young Award is presented to the most outstanding pitcher in each the American and National League of baseball, and named after pitching great, Denton True "Cyclone" Young of early baseball.

The award was first presented in 1956. Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers won three of these awards in a four year span between 1963-1966, before he retired of arthritic problems with his pitching left elbow. Roger Clemens won his seventh Cy Young Award in 2004 with the Houston Astros.

He had already won the award with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees. Randy Johnson won his fifth Cy Young Award in 2002 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Johnson also won the award while pitching for the Seattle Mariners. Nolan Ryan, considered the greatest strikeout king of baseball by many, played for 27 seasons in the Major Leagues. Being the first pitcher in history to surpass the 5,000 strikeout mark, and retiring with 5714 career strikeouts, he never won the award.

In 1973, Ryan was runner-up to the Baltimore Orioles' Jim Palmer for the award. Nolan Ryan retired with more than double the amount of strikeouts compared to the great Cy Young.
