Acrostic General Knowledge Quiz 3

Here is my third acrostic quiz. As usual, the nine letters composing the one-word answer to question 1 are the first letters to the answers to questions 2-10. Or, to put it another way, the first letters to the last nine answers form the answer to Q1.

1. This word means: a violent, brawling woman, or having violent tendencies (used especially to describe women).

Answer: termagant

For example: Socrates' wife Xanthippe was said to have been something of a {termagant;} she nagged him constantly. Some loose synonyms are virago and harridan. The English language has quite a few negative words to describe women, doesn't it?
2. U.S. History. The first black Americans to qualify as military pilots, in any branch of the armed forces, were known as the...?

Answer: Tuskegee Airmen

The African-American pilots became the 99th Fighter Sqaudron and the 332nd Fighter Group of the Army Air Corps. The program was based at Tuskegee Air Field in Alabama, starting in 1941. Their flight training was conducted by the Division of Aeronautics of Tuskegee Institute, the school founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington.
3. Literature. What is the last name of the poet who wrote the beginning lines, 'We are the hollow men --- We are the stuffed men'?

Answer: Eliot

T.S. Eliot's 'The Hollow Men' ends with the famous lines 'This is the way the world ends --- Not with a bang but a whimper.'
4. Military history. The air offensive against Hanoi that started March 2, 1965, was given what code name?

Rolling Thunder, an intensive bombing campaign, was authorized by President Johnson. (The other answers are also Vietnam War operation code names.)
5. Biography. The poet Emily Dickinson was born and died in what U.S. state?

Answer: Massachusetts

A bit of a recluse, Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10, 1830, lived her whole live there, and died there, May 15, 1886.
6. Mountaineering. Who was the first woman to summit Everest solo without oxygen, in 1995?

Answer: Alison Hargreaves

Grandson of Alfred the Great, he began as king of Wessex, but took his brother-in-law's dominions and then others starting around 926. In 927, Aethelstan minted coins which styled him as REX TOT(ius) BRIT(anniae), or 'King of all Britain.'
9. TV. The theme song to the soap opera 'The Young and the Restless' is called what?

Fascinating fact: this music was named for Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast who made the first perfect 10 score at the Olympics, because she used it for her floor exercise.
