Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The hamburger is believed to have originated here.

Answer: USA

Most sources agree that the burger in its current form - a ground beef patty between two slices of bread or within a bun, was first created in the United States. It is now globally associated with America. Being easy to prepare and eat, and providing a filling meal, the burger soon grew in popularity.

The modern burger typically includes lettuce, and other toppings like ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise.
2. Home to the city that gave the burger its name.

Answer: Germany

The hamburger is named after the city of Hamburg in Germany. During the 18th-19th centuries, most European immigrants to the US departed the continent from Hamburg. The ships usually docked at New York. To attract the German sailors, restaurants began preparing and advertising 'Hamburg steak', a patty of ground beef. Eventually this patty was made into the hamburger.
3. Fast food company whose burger is used as an economic index to compare purchasing power in different countries.

Answer: McDonald's

McDonald's was established in 1940 but its well known symbol, the Golden Arches, was created only in 1953. Ray Kroc bought the business from the McDonald brothers in 1955 and began expanding across the country. The largest restaurant chain in the world by revenue, McDonald's is famous for its burgers. The first McDonald's outside the US was opened in British Columbia, Canada in 1967. Today the chain has a presence in over 100 countries worldwide.

The Big Mac Index was created by "The Economist" magazine in 1986. It was an informal way of comparing the purchasing power in various countries by comparing the price of a Big Mac burger. While not a valid substitute for more in-depth economic models, the index does provide any easy way to have an elementary understanding of purchasing power parity.
4. "Home of the Whopper".

Answer: Burger King

If McDonald's has the Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder, its rival chain, Burger King, calls itself the 'Home of the Whopper'. The Whopper consists of a grilled beef patty of around 4 oz, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion slices and ketchup, all stuffed within a sesame bun.

Other condiments can be added on request. There are also additional fillings like bacon and jalapenos that can be included based on customer request.
5. "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

Answer: Wimpy

J. Wellington Wimpy is a part of the "Popeye" comic strip universe. Generally referred to as Wimpy, the character is shown to be lazy and gluttonous. He is perennially on the lookout for people to mooch off. His trademark line is - "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".
6. Riverdale character in love with hamburgers.

Riverdale is the fictional setting for the "Archie Andrews" comic book series. Jughead Jones is Archie's best friend. While Archie spends most of his time running after girls, Jughead's one true love is food, especially hamburgers. Such is his obsession with food that even his dog is named Hot Dog.

Despite eating like a glutton at all time, Jughead remains thin as a rake, a quality that makes the Riverdale girls jealous.
7. Site of a battle during the Vietnam War.

Answer: Hamburger Hill

The Vietnam War raged for twenty years from 1955 to 1975. Originally fought between North and South Vietnam, support from other nations resulted in the scale of the war increasing notably. When North Vietnam received support from China and the USSR, the US and its allies stepped in to prevent the country, and by extension the region, from succumbing to communism.

The Battle of Hamburger Hill was fought from 10-20 May 1969 as the opposing forces looked to gain control of a hill. There were significant casualties of this battle, though official numbers are disputed by both sides. The nickname of Hamburger Hill was given as the hill resembled a scene outside a butcher's shop due to the number of dead bodies piled.
8. Videogame with the main character of a chef, Peter Pepper.

Answer: BurgerTime

"BurgerTime" is an arcade game that was launched in 1982. The main character is a chef called Peter Pepper. The objective of the game is to avoid stepping on various hamburger ingredients strewn around while also evading capture. The game was originally called "Hamburger" in Japan, but was renamed to "BurgerTime" when it was launched in other countries.
9. Beavis and Butt-Head worked here.

Answer: Burger World

"Beavis and Butt-Head" is an animated sitcom that was originally created as a short film. It aired for seven seasons in its initial run from 1993 to 1997. The titular characters are teenage delinquents and the sitcom has a lot of adult humour and situations.

The two work at a fictional local fast food place called Burger World. Burger World is a parody of McDonald's with its logo being an inverted M.
