The Montreal Canadiens were one of the original six teams in the National Hockey League and have an illustrious history and the support of passionate fans. At one point, the star of the Canadiens or Habitants, as they are also called, was suspended for breaking his stick over the body of one of the opposing team.

The city of Montreal went mad and riot police had to be called out to quell the disturbance this suspension entailed. They have won numerous Stanley Cups.

Jacques Cartier claimed the country we know as Canada for France in 1534, exploring the St. Lawrence River in this and subsequent voyages. Cartier initially explored the coast of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St Lawrence in search of a passage to China. He was the first to contact the native peoples in the interior of the newly claimed country.

Samuel de Champlain did much to settle the interior of Canada or New France as it was then known. In fact, Vikings and cod fishermen knew the Canadian coastal waters well, long before the French settled in New France. Their settlements were more temporary, however, than the French settlements.

Sidney Crosby is a hockey phenomenon who was born in Halifax but grew up in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia. His father was a goaltender and so hockey is in his blood. He has played for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Canadian Olympic team.

The term Canuck would be the equivalent of the terms Yankee for Americans and Tommy for those individuals from Britain. It is slightly pejorative. There are a number of hypotheses for the derivation of this term, but it has been used in a variety of ways even including the development of a character by the name of Johnny Canuck, a sort of Canadian superhero.

The birchbark canoe was a wonderful invention allowing native peoples to travel through the many waterways of Canada with trade goods and provisions. It was very light and could be carried by one man over portages between rivers. Some of the larger ones could hold many hundreds of pounds of freight.

The cougar is the heaviest member of the cat family to be found in Canada and has a large range, although very few are found in the eastern half of Canada. They rarely attack man but there have been a number of deaths in the past as man encroaches on cougar habitats.

The coureurs des bois were the famous group of woodsmen and paddlers of New France. They depended on the fur trade and integrated to a large extent with the native peoples they made contact with, often marrying into native tribes.
