Canadian Tidbits #1 Trivia Quiz

I decided on Canada, as my first quiz. I tend to ramble on a lot, and so will this quiz, on a variety of topics. Thanks to Mrs Young, a extraordinary local teacher who is desperately trying to teach this old dog proper spelling and punctuation!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many provinces and territories are there in Canada?

Answer: 10 provinces and 3 territories

The 10 provinces are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The territories are the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. Nunavut is the least populated and the largest of the provinces and territories of Canada. It is also the newest, being established on April 1, 1999.
2. Which three oceans border Canada?

Answer: Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic

Ok, so there is no Northern Ocean, but there is a Southern. For many years only four oceans were officially recognized, (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic), then in 2000 the International Hydrographic Organization established the Southern Ocean(think Antarctica).
3. Which Prime Minister believed he could communicate with the dead?

Answer: Mackenzie King

Mackenzie King, who led Canada as Prime Minister during World War II, believed that with the help of a medium, he could communicate with the dead, including his mother, his grandfather, and many others. He thought the spirits could help him make his daily decisions. Maybe it worked, as the Allies won the war.
4. Where would you find the world's largest dinosaur?

Answer: Drumheller, Alberta

Drumheller, known for its fantastic dinosaur fossil finds, is also home to the world's largest dinosaur, a Tyrannosaurus Rex. At over 82 feet tall, it's made out of fibreglass and steel, and you can climb up inside (106 steps) to view the Alberta Badlands from its "mouth".
5. Ottawa has a rather unique Hostel. Why is it unique?

Answer: It was once a jail

It is the old Nicholas street gaol (old spelling of jail) where 3 "official" hangings took place while it was in operational. I have stayed there! You can sleep in a very small cell (with the locks disabled). It is thought to be haunted, with guests and staff both reporting strange voices, slamming of cell doors, and ghosts standing at your bed. Alas, after a long day on the road, I didn't see or hear anything - all I got was a good night's sleep!
6. The CN tower in Toronto is famous for being among the world's tallest freestanding structures. (as of September 2007 it was in 2nd place). How high is it?

Answer: 1815 feet, 5 inches

That's a really tall tower! The Guinness Book of World Records recognized the CN tower as the "Tallest Freestanding Tower" when it was built. There are two main visitor areas. The highest is the Sky Pod, at 1,465 feet. This is a great view! (FYI: It actually moves back and forth a bit in the breeze....up at the Sky Pod it can sway one and a half feet, from centre.) ***As of September 2007 the Dubai Tower in the United Arab Emirates surpassed the CN tower at approximately 1,822 feet and still being built!)
7. What town, located between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay on the Trans Canada Highway, is considered the worst place to hitch a ride according to many hitch-hikers?

Answer: Wawa, Ontario

According to most hitch-hikers, it's true and is known as one of the hardest place from which to hitch-hike. I got stuck there twice, once with 18 hitch-hikers in front of me. Slept by the Wawa Goose for two days. The Canadian Band 'Crowbar' once mentioned it on an album, and to the best of my memory it goes.."The longer you stand there the longer your hair gets...the longer your hair gets, the less chance of a ride. Up on the pavement in Wawa, Ontario!" Don't accept rides to Wawa is a common saying among hitch-hikers and the people who give them rides. (No offense to the fine people of Wawa, who gave me a free sandwich and coffee...)
8. A famous schooner built in Nova Scotia is featured on the Canadian 10 cent coin. What is it named?

Answer: The Bluenose

The Bluenose won fame for her racing, but in her twenty-five seasons she took part in only six serious competitions. She served in the fishing fleet for nearly twenty seasons. She was wrecked on a reef near Haiti in 1946. In 1963, using the original plans, a full scale replica called the Bluenose II was built. Her picture on the dime came about in 1937.
9. The Mariposa Festival is a famous folk festival - where is it held?

Answer: Orillia, Ontario

The Mariposa Folk Festival began in Orillia in 1961, and was a great success. In 1963, after reports of overcrowding, vandalism, theft, and public intoxication, the townsfolk vowed there would never be another one there and Mariposa began its migration.

It has been held at various locations, on the Toronto Islands, in Barrie, at Innis lake, and Ontario Place. There has always been a wide spectrum of performers, and it finally returned home to Orillia in 2000. I had the pleasure of being a volunteer and staff person 1986 to 1994. I may even have seen you there! Want more info? http://www.mariposafolk.com
10. The longest covered bridge in the world is in Canada - where is it?

Answer: Hartland, New Brunswick

The Hartland Covered Bridge is 1,282 feet long, and it spans the St. John River. It opened in 1901. Did you know some people say if you drive across it and make a wish, it will come true? I have both driven and walked across it, a unique experience. ( I forgot to make a wish...)
