Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which celestial body is no longer classified as it once was?

Answer: Pluto

Pluto was at one time considered one of the nine planets of our solar system, now relegated to "dwarf planet" in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union due to its relative size in comparison to Eris discovered in 2005 and 27% larger. So now we have eight actual recognized planets around the sun and a couple of very large space rocks. Oh well. Pluto and Goofy are still my favorite Disney dogs.
2. Which dinosaur is no longer going by its past long accepted name?

Answer: Brontosaurus

This behemoth is now termed "Apatosaurus". Really bummed me out. The extra syllable makes The Move hit tune unwieldy, not to mention all "Flintstones" references outdated. This may change back yet again, however. As of 2015, there is a debate in the scientific community that both species are a genus unto themselves.
3. What item that most US citizens just assumed as a service item, at one point later became almost totally "get your own"?

Answer: gasoline or fuel

You do have the option to "pay at the pump' at most stations now. Be sure to clean your windshield and check fluid levels while in the bay. Times have changed.
4. What geological wonder pulled a "disappearing" act?

Answer: Old Man Of The Mountain

THE symbol of New Hampshire for years and years. So much so that the image was on most official state documents and anything tourists might encounter including menus at restaurants in the state. As such, in 2000 it was featured on the back of the quarter coin honoring New Hampshire. Knowing that, there was deterioration and despite efforts to shore this icon up, the figure eroded and fell off its mooring in May 2003, crumbling below.
5. What sports figure turned the tables in a major way outside of sports?

Answer: Bruce Jenner

Transitioned in 2015, and is now Caitlyn Jenner. An athlete star featured on Wheaties cereal boxes, an Olympic champion and race car driver.
6. What kingdom morphed into a new identity in August 1959?

Answer: Hawaii

Now the 50th state of the USA. Highest consumption of Spam (meat product) per capita in the world. "Tiny Bubbles" (Don Ho) and fantastic beaches.
7. What, in the worldview, eventually changed shape?

Answer: Earth

Once thought of as flat. To quote a Beatles lyric, "Because the earth is round, it turns me on". Flat out, that's a fact, Jack.
8. Which unit of currency, later changed, was at one time major funding for a European offensive?

Answer: Deutschmark

Germany uses the Euro as of Jan 1, 1999. "Money" (Cabaret) "Money, Money, Money, Money" (O'Jays). "Money" (Pink Floyd).
9. Which fruit was feared at one time but attitudes shifted?

Answer: tomato

No longer thought of as poisonous. Do I dare eat a tomato? Ask Col. Robert Gibbon Johnson who reportedly in 1820 ate two pounds before an amazed (at the time) crowd in southern New Jersey on the courthouse steps. Hence the proliferation of the Jersey tomato and a standard foundation of the Campbell Soup Company. Yes, both the tomato and avocado are technically considered fruits.
10. Which rock star had legal double identities within a period of a decade?

Answer: Prince

In 1993 he announced that he would be known as a symbol or "glyph". The media then had only one way to refer to him, "The artist formerly known as Prince". Warner Bros., his record label at the time, was not pleased, to say the least. In 2000 when his contract was up with the label, he went back to being Prince again. So, we all had to think twice. I admit Bowie was all over the place with his persona, but he was David Bowie all the time.
