Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Had to put up Auntie Nora, who always had to be the first in everything. If there was a line, she was the first person in it. We called her what?

Answer: Auntie Cedent

Antecedent means coming before, as in a line, in time, in a phrase, or an event in history. Aunt Nora was the first aunt to pass away as well. I think she wanted it that way.
2. Auntie Valborg had a thing about weddings. She presided over the events that took place before all the marriages in the family, so we called her what?

Answer: Auntie Nuptial

Antenuptials, or prenuptials, are in reference to all events and traditions that come before the actual wedding. Fortunately, Auntie Valborg was far away when I first got married without any froufrou, but she resented it for years. I was so glad I didn't have to put up with the rigamarole; I like things nice and simple.
3. Now Auntie Ellen comes up; she was the second oldest of my dad's sisters. She spoke very little English, but insisted on pronouncing all long words with the stress on the third to last syllable when she did. What did we call her?

Answer: Auntie Penult

The ultimate is the last syllable, the penult the second to last and the antepenult is the third to last. Some words, like preVARicate came out fine, but
other words, like conVERsation, got people confused. She continued this habit with great vivacity any time she met Americans.
4. Aunt Lili was my mom's sister, and she had a little secret that I discovered when I was 12. Every Wednesday she placed a bet on the next day's horse race near the small town where she lived. I knew better than to tell her mom (my grandma) that Lili was putting up some large sums of money, but she won more than she lost. What did I call her?

Answer: Auntie Post

A wager placed on the day before a horse race, particularly in England, is referred to as ante-post. Post post wagers are generally NOT accepted at any sporting event. When the race goes off, the betting window is closed.
5. If there was a crowd of people gaping at something, my Auntie Hedwig was always up at the front of it...so she got which nickname?

Answer: Auntie Rior

Auntie Hedwig was very nosy - she called it 'one's natural curiosity'. She was always at the window trying to see what was going on outside, and almost always the person at the forefront of the crowd if there was an interesting enough event. Anterior means 'in front'.
6. Auntie Ragnhild was a wonderful embroiderer. She made most of the cloths for the church that were used for the front of the altar. We called her what?

Answer: Auntie Pendium

The antependium hangs from the front of the altar, lectern or pulpit. Most are contributed by women in the congregation who are skilled in embroidery.
7. Aunt Marie always tried to have her housework done before noon so she could enjoy the rest of the day before dinner...so we referred to her as what?

Answer: Auntie Meridiem

Ante-meridiem refers to the period before noon (a.m.), while post-meridiem refers to the period after(p.m.). Marie sometimes fell asleep with her feet up on the pillows.
8. Auntie Tulle liked old things and mementos from history, so we called her what?

Answer: Auntie Diluvian

Antediluvian literally means 'before the flood' (the one Noah prepared for), and implies great age. It's simply a hyperbolic expression, meaning old or old-fashioned.
9. Auntie Mille preferred things to be done in a certain process, so she had a 'waiting room' for guests who had not yet come into the living room. She had not only read books on etiquette, she had written some. We called her what?

Answer: Auntie Room

The anteroom or antechamber was a smaller, cozy place to rest and chat awhile before being escorted into the living room, which was usually more formal and large enough to accommodate many people. There the family would gather round the table and have a jolly old time.
10. Seems unkind to bring up Auntie Gurlie, who had a terrible fear of being killed in a battle, which was very unlikely, but she recalled vivid dreams of this. We called her what?

Answer: Auntie Bellum

Antebellum is Latin for 'before the war', and is generally used specifically for the American Civil War era. It refers to the lifestyles in the South, the dominant structures of southern hospitality and the slower pace of living. It also refers to the practice of slavery that was accepted even by some northerners.
When US President Lincoln announced his Emancipation Proclamation, slavery became a federal rather than a state issue, so the country was divided.

Auntie Gurlie died peacefully in her sleep, and we all hoped she had not been dreaming of a battle.
