Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The motel chain Motel 6 was founded in the year 1960, and has since become the largest motel chain spreading across the United States and Canada. Do you know which city and state Motel 6 was born in?

Answer: Santa Barbara, California

In case you ever wondered how it got its name, Motel 6 originally only charged $6 per night for a room, and even though the room fees have obviously increased over the years, they are still one of the lowest priced motel chains around. Not only is that a good reason to stay at one the next time you are traveling, but if you are traveling with a pet, you'll be happy to know that Motel 6 is typically pet friendly.
2. I just love a good zombie flick. This particular one came out of the UK in the year 2004. Simon Pegg wrote and starred in this comical take on the zombie movie genre. What is the name of this film?

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

What better validation of your zombie movie's success than being asked by the "Zombie King" himself, George A. Romero, to be a zombie in one of his movies? That is precisely what happened to Simon Pegg, and his co-writer of "Shaun of the Dead", Edgar Wright. That movie was George A. Romero's fourth installment of the zombie movie saga, "Land of the Dead".
3. What is the expression that is used to describe a person who always walks around moping and unhappy?

Answer: Gloomy Gus

According to the research I have done for the purpose of this quiz, the expression "Gloomy Gus" dates back to a comic strip from the early 1900s. The writer's name was Frederick Burr Opper, and the comic strip was called "Happy Hooligan". The character of Gloomy Gus was the brother of main character Happy Hooligan.

The comic strip made its debut in the "New York Journal" in the year 1900, and ran for 32 years.
4. Can you name the Major League Baseball catcher who was nicknamed "Pudge"? He played for both the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox, and held the record for most homeruns by a catcher with 351, until it was broken by Mike Piazza in 2004.

Answer: Carlton Fisk

A very interesting bit of information here: during the 1975 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, Carlton Fisk hit a ball directly down the left field line, which was looking like a possible foul ball. Now at the time, cameraman Lou Gerard, who was supposed to be following the ball (because that's how it was done back then) became distracted by a rodent and ended up filming Fisk instead, who was jumping and "waving" his own ball as fair.

This not only became known as one of the greatest moments in World Series history, but led to how the game is now filmed. So whenever you're watching a great play in baseball captured on film, you now know you can thank Lou Gerard.
5. What American writer, best known for his wit and ironic endings, is the author of the classic short story "The Gift of the Magi"?

Answer: O. Henry

O'Henry was born William Sidney Porter, in North Carolina, in the year 1862. Before he became "O' Henry", Mr. Porter worked as a bank teller for a bank in Texas, where he was accused of embezzlement. Mr. Porter was released on bail, but the day before the trial he jumped bail and fled to Honduras.

While there, his wife became ill with tuberculosis and he returned home to be with her and their daughter. He turned himself in and was sentenced to five years in prison, but was let out after only three years for good behavior.
6. This question is a common bond within a common bond. Which female first name describes a character created by William Shakespeare, a main character from television's "Lost", and a "Simpsons" character?

Answer: Juliet

The name Juliet, which can also be spelled "Juliette", comes from the Latin name Julia and/or Julius. The name means "son (or daughter) of love".
7. Remember when you and your buddy wanted to congratulate each other for a job well done, you would use the ceremonious "high five"? Well it seems that the "high five" has morphed into a new gesture for today's generation. What is this move that even President and First Lady Obama use to express a job well done?

Answer: Fist Bump

I really wanted to try and give an informative history on the "fist bump", but apparently it is somewhat of a mystery, so I will share what I did learn. Some of the possibilities that I have read range from the cartoon characters "Wonder Twins", who would touch hands to activate their super powers, to germophobes such as Howie Mandel using it as a way of avoiding handshaking without appearing to be rude.
8. What hockey team brought home the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York?

Answer: USA

Hockey coach Herb Brooks took a group of amateur hockey players and turned them into the "Miracle Team". They managed to beat the Russian team, which was the greatest team in the world, in the semi-final round of the Olympics. Team USA then went on to defeat Finland and take home the gold. The 2004 movie "Miracle" is based on this event, starring Kurt Russell as the coach.
9. What is the name of the appropriately titled autobiography of Timothy Leary?

Answer: Flashbacks

Dr. Timothy Leary was a psychologist, best known for his experimentation with LSD and coining the phrase "Tune in , turn on, drop out". Dr. Leary's life was surrounded by controversy pretty much until his death from prostate cancer in 1996. An interesting fact that I learned is that a friend of Timothy's had seven grams of his ashes "buried in space".

His ashes were actually placed aboard a rocket, the same rocket that Gene Roddenberry's ashes were placed on and sent into space where they reportedly orbited for six years before burning up.
10. Okay, time is up and the interrogation is over; you've got all the clues you need to "wrap up the case". Round up the previous nine "suspects", and tell me what links them together?
