Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the eight main islands of Hawaii, which island is located farthest north?

Answer: Kauai

The island of Kauai is approximately 552.3 square miles. It has a population of less than 70,000 persons. The movie "The Descendants" starring George Clooney was filmed on the island. Like some Caribbean islands (Grenada included), there is a law that states that no building can be higher than a coconut palm. Since coconut palms can be 60 - 100 feet tall, it means that buildings cannot be more than 4 or 5 stories high (tall).
2. While this sea dweller has been called a "man-eater", there are several species of it that that does not attack humans or come close to them. Some of these creatures are actually in more danger from us than we are from them. What are they?

Answer: Sharks

Did you know that a shark bites with its lower jaw first and then its upper jaw?
Different types of shark have teeth that are shaped depending on their diets. Sharks that are meat eaters have more pointed and sharp teeth than plant eaters or plankton eating sharks.
3. In Spain, I will ask for "agua", in France I will ask for "eau", in Italy I will ask for "acqua". What am I asking for in English to quench my thirst?

Answer: water

Water is a valuable commodity. Approximately 1% of the water found on earth is drinkable. More than 97% of the earth's water is found in the oceans. It is salty and undrinkable unless like some countries, you build a desalination plant which allows you to convert salt water to drinking water.
4. What is the closest country to the United States if we exclude Canada and Mexico?

Answer: Russia

Russia is very close to Alaska.

Russia is yet another country with a flag colour of red, white and blue. There are over 25 countries with flag colours of red, white and blue. Russia has a population of over 140 million persons. The capital of Russia is Moscow.
5. "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here" is an inscription at the entrance to Hell from what classic piece of literature?

Answer: Inferno

The piece of literature is a poem by Dante Alighieri. Interestingly enough, comics, cartoons and even a movie or two have been made about "Inferno". The word "Dante" is actually translated to mean "Everlasting" or "Enduring". There are variants in the spelling depending in the liking of the parents. My friend's name is spelled "Donte" but it comes from the same origin.
6. Where according to Norse mythology is Valhalla located?

Answer: Asgard

Valhalla is translated as "Hall of the Dead". Asgard is one of the Nine Worlds and home to the Norse gods. Asgard is mentioned in the movie "Thor" and you can also catch references in the "Thor" cartoons. There is also a PC Video game and XBox 360 game called "Battle for Asgard".
7. Who sang the song, "Got My Mind Set On You" in the 1980s?

Answer: George Harrison

Released in 1987, it reached Number 1 in the USA. Two very funny music videos were released for this song. Check it out on YouTube sometime.
8. Luther Vandross' given middle name is also the same as a brand of Pasta. Can you guess which of the names mentioned below it is?

Answer: Ronzoni

Ronzoni is a brand of pasta, marketed by the New World Family brand name that makes delicious dishes. I am not quite sure why Luther was given such a name. Luther Ronzoni Vandross was a very popular and successful singer who died at the tender age of 54, in 2005.

His songs include "Dance with my Father", which for some reason is frequently played at Caribbean Weddings (Father of the bride dances) and "If only for one Night", played at every Valentine dinner I have ever attended. Still they are quite beautiful songs.
9. I just bought a new phone. It says it is 4G, what does the "G" stand for?

Answer: Generation

4G technology is included the latest type of smart phones. While these technologies are not yet available worldwide, due mainly to local ISPs and Telephone Service providers not providing all the services to their clients as yet, it has not stopped the sales of smartphones worldwide.
10. If you were to personally address a letter to the President of the United States, using his official residence, which address line must your letter contain?

Answer: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave

The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Public tours are available to select part of the residence to visitors, but they must go through official channels and mandatory security checks.
