Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dan Dare, famed pilot of the future, first appeared in print in 1950, in which British comic?

Answer: Eagle

Dan Dare appeared in the very first issue of "Eagle", published on April 14th 1950, and his adventures continued weekly until the comic folded in 1969.
Between 1977 and 1979, the story was revitalised in "2000 AD" and then when "The Eagle" was relaunched in 1982, Dan Dare was once again the main attraction and continued to be until 1994, when poor sales caused the comic to cease publication.
Dan Dare has been dramatised on radio, TV and in video games, and has always managed up to this point to outwit his arch enemy, The Mekon, ruler of the Treens of northern Venus.
2. The phrase "Who Dares Wins" is credited to Sir David Stirling, founder of which elite branch of the British army?

Answer: Special Air Service (SAS)

The SAS, despite being formed in 1941, did, until 1980, operate largely behind a cloak of secrecy due to the sensitive nature of many of their operations.
This only changed when, in 1980, on live TV, the force stormed the Iranian embassy in London after a six day siege, successfully rescuing all but one of the 20 hostages being held, and killing five of the six hostage takers in a raid that lasted just 17 minutes.
Paratroopers were first deployed in combat by Nazi forces in WWII during the invasions of Norway and Denmark in 1940, while the British Special Reconnaissance Regiment (SRR) wasn't formed until 2005, and the Home Guard was a civilian force which ceased operations at the end of WWII.
3. After playing on the albums "Chinatown" (1980), "Renegade" (1981) and "Thunder And Lightning" (1983), keyboard player Darren Wharton left which band to form the band Dare in 1985?

Answer: Thin Lizzy

Although Wharton has not achieved anything like the success he had with Thin Lizzy with Dare, they continue to tour and put out good keyboard based rock music, and have regularly released albums since their formation in 1985, usually attracting good reviews. "melodicrock.com" rated their 2016 album, "Sacred Ground" at 94% and declared it to be "11 great tracks of keyboard and guitar framed music".
Interesting note - the band's first two albums, "Out Of The Silence" (1988) and "Blood From Stone" (1991) featured Brian Cox on keyboards, before he went on to join UK chart toppers D:Ream and became a Doctor of Philosophy in high-energy particle physics, now a TV regular on many science shows.
4. In 2002, Canadian company Dare Foods were awarded the contract to produce which much loved products, originally sold in 1927?

Answer: Girl Guide Cookies

Girl Guide cookies were the brainchild of a Girl Guide leader from Regina, Saskatchewan who hoped to raise some funds for her local troop. Her idea was so well received, and so profitable, that by 1929, the Girl Guides of Canada adopted the idea, making cookie sales the official fundraising activity for the whole organisation.
More than six million boxes of these tasty treats are sold every year across Canada, raising over $14 million. To show their special place in the nation's heart, during the Gulf War in the 1990s, every Canadian soldier upon arrival in Saudi Arabia was given a box of Girl Guide cookies.
When Dare were awarded the contract in 2002, this ended a 40 year partnership, during which time Nabisco/Christie Brown had been the sole manufacturer of the cookies.
5. In 2016, Dare To Be Different was formed by Susie Wolff and Rob Jones, an organisation whose aim to is get more females competing in which sport?

Answer: Motor racing

Susie Wolff, while a racing driver, competed in karting, Formula Three and the German DTM touring car championship before being signed by the Williams Formula One team as a development driver. Her co-founder of Dare To Be Different, Rob Jones, is a former CEO of the Motor Sports Association, later rebranded as Motorsport UK; their organisation aims to use motor sports to allow women and girls to realise their potential in a vast area of traditionally male dominated sectors.
This is done through a variety of workshops aimed at girls as young as eight, including engineering, media etiquette and the importance of fitness, nutrition and diet as well as motor sport activities such as tyre changing under pit stop conditions, and karting.
Ambassadors for the non profit organisation include: the deputy team principal of Williams Grand Prix Engineering, Claire Williams; strategy engineer for the Alfa Romeo Racing Formula One team, Ruth Buscombe, who also formerly worked for the Sauber, Haas and Ferrari F1 teams; motorcycle racer Maria Costello, the first women ever to claim a podium finish at the Isle of Mann TT course; and Bonnie Beard, mechanic for the Virgin Australia Supercars team.
6. In 1958, which political leader urged his people to "Dare to think, dare to speak, dare to act"?

Answer: Mao Zedong (People's Republic of China)

The second five year plan of the People's Republic of China, known as the "Great Leap Forward" was implemented between 1958 and 1962, and Chairman Mao aimed to encourage farmers to band together to form huge communes of up to 5,000 families in order to become a world leader in agriculture. This was followed by the desire to bring industry to rural areas, and through the use of backyard blast furnaces, surpass UK in steel production.

However, this led to people melting down much needed items to produce worthless masses of metal in order to meet quotas, as well as taking labour away from agriculture, resulting in crops failing and widespread famine in which it is estimated as many as 40 million people died of starvation or diseases related to starvation, making the Great Chinese Famine the largest in human history.
7. "The love that dare not speak its name" is the final line in the poem "Two Loves" (1892), from which poet, perhaps best remembered as Oscar Wilde's lover?

Answer: Lord Alfred Douglas

Oscar Wilde was married to Constance Lloyd when he first met Douglas but marriage didn't stop them from starting a passionate, often volatile affair, which infuriated Douglas's father the Marquis of Queensberry, he of the famed rules of boxing.
When Douglas refused to give up his lifestyle, the Marquis began a public persecution of Wilde, resulting in his trial in 1895 which resulted in a criminal conviction for gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts.
Following Wilde's release from prison in 1897, the pair reunited briefly but then parted, Wilde to live in Paris, where he died in 1900, aged just 43, and Douglas to become friends with and eventually marry fellow poet Olive Custance in 1902.
8. "Double Dare" (1976-77) was a USA TV quiz show, hosted by which well known quiz show host from Ontario, Canada?

Answer: Alex Trebek

"Double Dare" (1976-77) was a short lived quiz show in which contestants in isolation booths attempted to correctly identify an object or person based on a series of one sentence clues, up to a maximum of ten clues.
If a contestant buzzed in and correctly guessed the answer, they could dare their opponent to give the correct answer based on the next clue. Should an incorrect answer be given, the option for a double dare, answering correctly on the next clue, was available.
Trebek went on to become a household name hosting "Jeopardy" since the daily syndicated version of the show debuted in 1984.
9. "Broadsword calling Danny Boy". In which 1968 film did Richard Burton utter this line, which became one of the best remembered from the movie?

Answer: Where Eagles Dare

"Where Eagles Dare" (1968) was based on the 1967 book of the same name by Alistair MacLean, and starred Clint Eastwood alongside Burton.
It told the tale of a crack team of Allied commandos attempting to enter a castle accessible only by cable car, from which they must rescue U.S. Army Brigadier General George Carnaby, played by Robert Beatty, before the Germans have a chance to interrogate him.
Amusingly, both Eastwood and Burton have referred to the film as "Where Doubles Dare" as their actual screen time is minimal, with the majority of the action scenes and fight sequences being performed by stunt doubles.
10. In 1587, Virginia Dare became the first English child to be born in the Americas, when her mother gave birth at which settlement?

Answer: Roanoke Colony

Virginia Dare's birth date of August 18th 1587, when she was born to Ananias Dare and Eleanor White is well documented, but her date of death is unknown, due to the fact that she was a part of the Roanoke Colony that mysteriously disappeared without any trace.
Governor of the colony, and Virginia's grandfather, John Dare, returned to England for fresh supplies in the same year that she was born, and upon his return in 1590, the whole colony had disappeared.
There is speculation that the colony had assimilated with Native American communities, while others claim the colony were massacred, but no archaeological evidence has been found to back up any claims.
