Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these "dotcom" companies was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994?

Answer: Amazon

Jeff Bezos was named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 1999 (at age 35), for revolutionizing the point-and-click method of shopping, even as his company continued to struggle to turn a profit. Fortunately for small business owners, many people still prefer the charm of a neighborhood bookstore or music shop.
2. During his lifetime, eccentric multi-millionaire Howard Hughes produced films, founded businesses, courted famous women, and came up with this thing called the Spruce Goose. What was the Spruce Goose?

Answer: an unusual plane

It was actually a "flying boat" made of wood, which got its name from joking remarks made by U.S. senators. It was made to travel in air and on water, like a goose, and a spruce is a type of lumber producing tree. Hughes hated the nickname. He would only refer to the project by his original name for it, "HK-1 Hercules".
3. Which cruise line allowed one of its ships' names to be used on the television show, "The Love Boat"?

Answer: Princess

The name of the ship used on the show was "The Pacific Princess". The program was based on a book written by real life cruise director Jeraldine Saunders. She told the stories of some of the passengers' encounters, which she observed on the job.
4. Which of these mammals can move the fastest?

Answer: Cheetah

On average, most cheetahs can run over one hundred kilometers per hour. If the question included birds, a cheetah would easily be beaten by a falcon, twice as fast by air.
5. According to the New Testament of the Bible, which of these would NOT have been a possible nickname for one of Jesus' twelve apostles?

Answer: Steve

Three of the twelve apostles were named Thomas, Philip, and Bartholomew. There was no Stephen in the apostles, but he was one of the seventy-two original disciples, the first deacon in the Catholic church, and the first Christian martyr. The "feast of Stephen", mentioned in the "Good King Wenceslas" Christmas carol, is his day, December 26.
6. What is the title of the Oscar-winning 1994 short film about a fourteen year-old boy who comes to terms with being gay? Hint: It was also the name of one of the twins on the sitcom "Please Don't Eat the Daisies", and the last name of an Oscar winner named Claire.

Answer: Trevor

It was later released on video with an introduction by Ellen DeGeneres. The film was also included in a compilation of four gay-themed short films released together in 1997 under the title "Boys Life 2" (the second in a film series). The twins on "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" were named Tracey and Trevor Nash. Claire Trevor won an Oscar for her supporting role in the 1948 film, "Key Largo".
7. Which of these is the Latin version of the name for the goddess of the moon and hunt?

Answer: Diana

This goddess's Greek name is Artemis. Diana is also known for protecting a mortal girl named Amethyst by turning her into the stone which now bears her name, in order to protect her from the wrath of the wine and celebration god, Dionysus. The Temple of Diana at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
8. Which of these artists wrote the song "Manic Monday" for The Bangles?

Answer: Prince

Prince used the pseudonym "Christopher" when he wrote the song in 1985. The single went to number two on the Billboard U.S. pop charts in the February of 1986. Prince has used other pseudonyms writing for other artists, including the names "Alexander Nevermind" and "Joey Coco".
9. Which colors are featured on Cuba's national flag?

Answer: red, white, and blue

The flag was created by Narciso Lopez in 1849, and put together by Emilia Tolon. At that time, Cuba was divided into three sections, represented by three blue stripes. The two white stripes represent purity and justice. The single white star in the center of a red triangle to the left symbolizes the unity of the people upon the bloodshed of revolutionary liberators.
10. Which of these adornments were the first used by the Medic Alert organization for its members to wear in case of emergency?

Answer: bracelets

The bracelets bear the emblem of the emergency medical response service started in 1956. With one identification number, the bracelets can provide medical history, medications one may be taking, emergency contact information, and any medicinal allergies. They now offer pendants as well.
11. Which of these words would be worth the most points in a game of Scrabble (ignoring where the word is placed on the board)?

Answer: BUXOM

The letter 'Q' is worth ten points in the game. 'J' and 'X' are worth eight. 'Y' is worth four. 'F', 'B', and 'M' are worth three. The other letters shown are all worth only one point each. Therefore: "furry" = 10 pts., "joy" = 13 pts., "quilt" = 14 pts., and "buxom" = 16 pts.
12. On "The Brady Bunch", Greg once had a crush on someone at his school who was causing him to lose concentration and have his grades drop in his math class. What was her name?

Answer: Lynda

Mike and Carol found a poem Greg had written while daydreaming of her, so they tried everything to find Lynda, and even summoned one girl to their house. But it turned out that Lynda was Greg's math TEACHER. When Mike met her, he admitted (in front of her husband) that if he had a teacher who looked like her, he'd have flunked too!
13. Which of these U.S. presidents was elected in the fall of 1976?

Answer: Carter

Jimmy Carter became the thirty-ninth president of the U.S.A. in January of 1977, after defeating incumbent president Gerald Ford (who had taken office after Richard Nixon's resignation). Carter served one term in office, then lost his bid for re-election to Ronald Reagan, who went on to serve two terms.
14. In the 2000 movie "Best in Show", southern-bred bloodhound owner Harlan Pepper (Christopher Guest) decides to try his hand as an entertainer after the dog competition is over. Which of these was one of his props?

Answer: lasso

Harlan becomes an amateur ventriloquist and rodeo clown. In his last scene, he is spinning a rope and trying to dance in and out of the loop as a dwindling group of bored senior citizens looks on.
15. Now that you've made a superheroic effort on this quiz, look over your answers. A certain fictional character should pop into your head, one that's been around for decades, in print and on television. Fill in the blank with this character's name.

Answer: Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman was created for Sensation Comics in December of 1941 by William Moulton Marston, under the pseudonym Charles Moulton. She originated as an AMAZON PRINCESS, named DIANA, who was sent into the world to end violence and teach people the peace loving ways of her home, women-only Paradise Island.

She flew to "man's world" in AN UNUSUAL PLANE. It was invisible and was controlled robotically through mental telepathy (via her tiara). Her costume almost looked like it was made of an American flag.

It was basically a bustier; the RED top had a golden eagle emblazoned in front; and the short shorts (originally a skirt) were BLUE with WHITE stars. Her boots were red with white stripes. Wonder Woman also had accessories, including bulletproof BRACELETS (made of 'feminum'), and a magic LASSO--a golden rope which forced anyone bound by it to tell the truth. Wonder Woman's secret identity is Diana PRINCE.

Her love interest has been Major STEVE TREVOR throughout most of the comic book series. And, no superhero series would be complete without a recurring villain; Wonder Woman's nemesis is the treacherous CHEETAH (originally a jealous socialite with a split feline personality in costume, The Cheetah has become more ferocious and animal-like in recent years, but occasionally an ally as well).

The Cheetah was featured as a member of the 'Legion of Doom' in a Super Friends cartoon show in the late 1970s. In 1976, the television show premiered, starring LYNDA CARTER, whose BUXOM figure was perfect for the costume and the role. Wonder Woman has blazed a trail for female superheroes in DC comic books and cartoons, and continues to do so in her seventh decade. She has aged remarkably well.
