Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The origin of the Seven Deadly Sins is frequently attributed to whom?

Answer: Pope Gregory the Great

Lust, gluttony, sloth, wrath, envy, pride, and greed are from Gregory's revised list from the year 590. Pope Gregory ranked them in seriousness, with pride being the most deadly, to lust being the least deadly. St. Thomas Aquinas subsequently objected to such a ranking, since "deadly" does not have a "most" or "least" connotation.
2. The "Seven Year Itch" has its origin from where?

Answer: A irritating and contagious skin condition

Called "camp itch", "soldier itch", or "French itch", it sometimes resulted in fear of contact with soldiers, and appeared in the literature long before the movie of the same name. It had been attributed primarily to scabies or eczema.
3. Which of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was alive?

Answer: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The biggest controversy surrounding the gardens remains whether or not they actually existed. It is a fascinating story to investigate the pros and cons of this debate. Located in present day Iraq, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were allegedly destroyed by earthquake in the pre-Christian era. Of the seven wonders, only the Great Pyramid of Giza survives.
4. Which is the most famous city associated with Seven Hills?

Answer: Rome

At least 42 other cities claim to be built on seven hills, most notably Barcelona, Istanbul, and Prague (although some say nine for that city)! In Rome, the most famous of the hills is the Palatine hill, adjacent to the Roman forum, on which are the ruins of three emperor's palaces.
5. What is the significance of the number seven regarding the Vestal Virgins who guarded the sacred flame in the Roman Forum?

Answer: They were seven years old when chosen.

Initially four in number and later six, they were the only females allowed into the priesthood and committed to three decades of celibacy. The vestals commanded enormous respect and power, and could free condemned men by simply touching them.
6. Which was not one of the medieval Seven Seas?

Answer: North Sea

The remaining four seas were the Caspian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the Persian Gulf. Rudyard Kipling wrote a book with the title "The Seven Seas", but the phrase was mentioned on only one of over 210 pages.
7. Which geographic region consists of seven entities?

Answer: Central America

They are Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. There are six New England states, ten Balkan countries, and the Scandinavian countries number from three to five, depending on whether one counts Finland and Iceland in addition to Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
8. Which sport has seven players on a team?

Answer: all of these

Netball has a goal shooter, goal attack, goal defense, goalkeeper, wing attack, wing defense, and center. Water polo has a goalkeeper and six field players. Team handball has two wings, a circle runner, three backcourt players, and a goalkeeper.
9. Although no one knows for certain, the earliest recording of the institution of a seven day week comes from when and whom?

Answer: 2350 B.C. Sargon, King of Akkad

In ancient China and Egypt, ten day weeks were the norm (probably because we have ten fingers) but the Sumerians gave us not only the seven day week but the sixty minute hour. Although it is pure speculation, some researchers have postulated that the choice of seven comes from the "wandering" celestial objects visible to the ancients in the night sky, including the planets Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and the sun and moon.
10. Who was not one of the "Magnificent Seven"?

Answer: Gary Cooper

The classic western was nominated for only one Oscar (Best Score), and did not win. The other four of the Magnificent Seven are Yul Brynner, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, and Brad Dexter.
