Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Which C is regarded as the world's fastest land mammal?

Answer: Cheetah

The cheetah is a sprinter, so its top speed refers to short bursts. The cheetah can reach speeds of up to 75mph. The cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in five seconds which, in fact is slower than a Jaguar: a Jaguar F-Type, with 380BHP in the engine. (Sorry, could not resist that little bit of silliness.)
2. Brain Teasers: (Common words) What C can be a city in North Dakota; the principal male dancer in a particular Russian ballet; or a model of British car?

Answer: Cavalier

Cavalier is a city in North Dakota with a population of 1,302 at the 2010 census. It was also the principal male role in 'The Nutcracker' ballet. In the UK, the Vauxhall Cavalier was a saloon car much appreciated by travelling salesmen.
Yes, the three wrong answers were all red herrings in that they also were models of automobiles. (And to have suggested Cavalier as one side of the English Civil War would have made this too easy, wouldn't it?)

Meanwhile, Chevrolet also manufactured a Cavalier in the USA between 2982 and 2005. Thanks to quiz player terracorra for reminding me.
3. Celebrities: Which C with a penchant for finding those with the X factor who have got talent was number six in the "Sunday Times Rich List" for 2015?

Answer: Simon Cowell

Spotting stars among skateboarding rabbits and tone-deaf factory workers obviously paid off for Simon Cowell. The main man in "The X Factor", "Britain's Got Talent" and "America's Got Talent" raked in £325 million, an increase of £25m over the previous year.
4. Entertainment: (Casinos and Gambling) Which C was a Las Vegas casino noted for attracting top entertainers and was also home to an attraction called 'Cleopatra's Barge'?

Answer: Caesars Palace

Opened in 1966, the hotel and casino complex showed a Roman theme including - naturally - a large statue of Julius Caesar. A long list of top entertainers have graced the stage of the 400-seater Colosseum auditorium. Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr were among them, plus the likes of Celine Dion, Elton John and Liberace.
A bar and lounge were housed in a replica of Cleopatra's Barge.
5. For Children: Which C was a cat that appeared in the TV cartoon series "Aladdin"?

Answer: Chaos

"Aladdin" ran for three seasons from 1994 on Disney franchises. Chaos was a winged blue cat. Mat Frewer provided the voice.
6. General Knowledge: What C is a type of tea that is noted for its health benefits?

Answer: Chamomile

Chamomile tea, also spelt Camomile, is made from a daisy-like herb. It is noted for relieving insomnia and other physical and emotional ailments. It was used by the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians as a salve to help wounds heal.
7. Geography: What C is the largest country by area with only one time zone?

Answer: China

With a land area of 9.597 million km², the People's Republic of China is the third largest country in the world - after Russia and Canada. Costa Rica also has only time zone, but its area is 51,100km². Canada has six and Chile two.
8. History: What C was the name of one of the first battles in the American War of Independence?

Answer: Concord

The battle between British troops and local militiamen was fought on April 19 1775. This was not the type of force-against-force battle that the British expected or could cope with, instead it was more of a guerilla action by the locals. The Red Coats were particularly incensed by the use against them of snipers.

It was a victory for the colonists. The wrong answers were all battles in the English Civil War.
9. Hobbies: (Photography); What C was the name of a popular brand of Japanese camera?

Answer: Canon

The first Kwanon cameras were made in Japan in 1934. The name was changed to Canon in 1945 because, it was said, the new spelling was more indicative of the German cameras that dominated the market at that time.
Contax and Carl Zeiss were German-made cameras, Cobra was a US digital camera manufacturer.
10. Humanities: (Architecture): What C was an American architect who designed the new One World Trade Center that was completed in 2014?

Answer: David Childs

At 1,776 feet tall, the new One World Trade Center was the tallest building in New York City (and fifth tallest in the world) when it opened. Sheathed largely in glass, it rose 104 stories above street level. It replaced one of the twin towers destroyed in the 2001 terrorist attack.
The wrong answers were also architects, but they worked in the 20th Century.
11. Literature: Which C was a French author whose books included "L'Étranger", "La Peste" and "La Mort heureuse"?

Answer: Albert Camus

OK, let's give these three their English translations: "The Stranger" (1942); "The Plague" (1947); and "A Happy Death" (published in 1995). Born in 1913, Camus died at the relatively young age of 46 in a car crash in 1960. Three years earlier, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
The wrong answers were all Belgian writers.
12. Movies: Which movie based on a musical dealing with scandal and corruption in America's third largest city won six Oscars in 2002?

Answer: Chicago

"Chicago" was nominated in 13 categories. Among those wins were Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta Jones. Set in the Windy City in the 1920s, it was the story of a murdering housewife and a vaudeville performer as they tried to avoid the death penalty. It was basically a true story and was a play, a musical and made into a move in 1927.
13. Music: Which C was an American singer/songwriter noted for his 'story songs' who took a tale of misplaced promises between a man and his son to the top of the charts?

Answer: Harry Chapin

"Cat's In The Cradle" was developed by Chapin from a poem/story by his wife, Sandy. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. Chapin probably did not secure the commercial success many had hoped at the start of his career. He was a consummate performer in concerts that sold out wherever he played. Chapin also co-founded World Hunger Year and played up to half his concerts to raise funds for the charity, which aimed to highlight and relieve starvation across the globe.
14. People: (Famous Women) What C was the last Pharaoh of ancient Egypt?

Answer: Cleopatra

Cleopatra lived from around 69 BC to 30 BC. Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII were co-regents after the death of their father, Ptolemy XII. As was customary in such circles they married and together ruled Egypt. Ptolemy had Cleopatra exiled, leaving him in charge.

When the Roman Empire, led by Julius Caesar, invaded, Ptolemy was overthrown and Caesar returned Cleopatra to the throne. She was to have relationships with Caesar, and with Mark Antony.
15. Religion: What C is also known as 'Festival of Light' in the Jewish Faith"

Answer: Chanukah

It is also, of course, known as Hanukka. It recalls a miracle at the time of the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in about 164 BCE when a quantity of oil burned for several days. The festival is marked between late November and late December each year.
16. Sci/Tech: (Chemistry): What C is the name of a scientific family that won or was associated with five Nobel prizes?

Answer: Curie

Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes, Physics (in 1903) and Chemistry (in 1911). Her husband, Pierre, shared the 1903 prize with her. Their daughter Irene Joliot Curie won the Chemistry Prize in 1936. 19. Video Games: What C was the name of a puzzle game that attracted tens of millions of social media and smartphone players?

Answer: Candy Crush

"Candy Crush" was developed on Facebook and "Candy Crush Saga" spread to smartphone and tablets. Players were challenged to match coloured tiles so that they adjoined each other.
20. World: (Military Matters): What C was the name of a main battlefield tank that entered service with the British Army in 1983?

Answer: Challenger

The Challenger 1 went into service in 1983 and its successor the Challenger 2 in 1998. The Challenger 2 saw service in the Iraq War.
