Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Golden retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in North America, but where was the breed developed?

Answer: Scotland

They are a fairly recent breed, developed in the late 1800s by Lord Tweedmouth. He wanted the "perfect" hunting dog that also looks beautiful. The result is a handsome, sweet-tempered, intelligent dog that is capable of sitting quietly for long periods, has a soft mouth for retrieving game and works well with other dogs and hunters.
2. Goldenrod is the state flower of which US state?

Answer: Kentucky

Because Goldenrod blooms at the same time as ragweed, it gets often blamed for hayfever and other allergy attacks. But while ragweed pollen is being distributed by the wind, goldenrod pollen is quite sticky and has to be transmitted by insects. Somebody with an allergy to goldenrod would have to get quite close to the flower to get any symptoms.
3. In Greek mythology, Jason searched for the Golden Fleece. What was the name of his ship?

Answer: Argo

The Golden Fleece was the hide of a flying ram sent by the goddess Nephele to save her son Phrixus from his stepmother. After the ram carried him to safety, Phrixus sacrificed him to Zeus (some gratitude!) and hung his fleece into an oak tree. Jason and a group of heroes known as the Argonauts were sent on a quest for it by Jason's uncle, King Pelias of Iolchos.

After many adventures, Jason managed to get the Golden Fleece, but it didn't bring him much luck.
4. Which of the following movies has won six Golden Globe Awards?

Answer: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

This 1975 film is the only movie to have won Golden Globe Awards in all five major categories: Best Motion Picture, Actor (Jack Nicholson), Actress (Louise Fletcher), Director (Milos Forman), Screenplay (Bo Goldman; Lawrence Hauben), as well as New Star of the Year (Brad Dourif).

It also was the first movie in 41 years to sweep all five major categories in the Oscars. The only other movies to have accomplished this are "It Happened One Night" (1934) and "Silence of the Lambs" (1991).
5. Is it true that the Golden Gate Bridge gets its name from a place in Turkey?

Answer: Yes

The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate Strait, which was named by John Fremont, Captain in the Topographical Engineers in the US army in 1846. He wrote in his memoirs that the area reminded him of the harbour of Istanbul known as the Golden Horn.
6. True or false: Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to celebrate a Golden Jubilee after fifty years on the throne.

Answer: False

Altogether there were six British monarchs who ruled for fifty years or longer. They were Henry III (1216-1272; he inherited the throne at the age of nine), Edward III (1327-1377), James VI of Scotland/James I of England (1566-1625, although he only became king of England in 1603), George III (October 1760-January 1820; he almost made it to sixty years), Queen Victoria (1837-1901; she is the only English monarch to have celebrated a Diamond anniversary after sixty years on the throne) and finally Queen Elizabeth II (acceded to the throne in 1952 and does not appear to have any intention of leaving any time soon).
7. "Little Golden Books", a popular series of children's books, were first published in 1942. One of the original twelve titles had sold over 15 million copies as of the year 2000 and was at the time the all-time best-selling hardcover children's book in English. Which book was it?

Answer: The Poky Little Puppy

It was written by Janette Sebring Lowrey and illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren.
8. The Golden Rule states we should treat others in the same way we ourselves wish to be treated. Which of the following have a form of the Golden Rule in their teachings?

Answer: All of these

In addition, expressions of the Golden Rule can be found in Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, secular humanism and many other belief systems.
9. The Golden Arches are the almost universally recognized symbol of the fast food chain McDonalds. The McDonald universe is populated by a number of characters, such as the clown Ronald McDonald. Which of the following characters is NOT a McDonalds character?

Answer: Dino McRib

Although the McRib Sandwich is on the menu, off and on in North America, and year-round in some European countries, there is no such character as Dino McRib.
10. The Bay Cat is one of three species of Golden Cat. Where is its natural habitat?

Answer: Borneo

This cat is only found on the island of Borneo. It is about the size of a house cat and highly endangered. The other two species of Golden Cat are African Golden Cat and Asian Golden Cat. Despite their name, their coats can have a variety of colours.
