Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I were enjoying dinner in an Italian restaurant, which of the following deserts should I most likely see on the menu?

Answer: Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a delectable Italian desert made of espresso-soaked ladyfingers that are layered between a mixture of whipped egg yolks, mascarpone cheese, cocoa, and Marsala wine. There are many variations of the dessert, usually involving different soft cheeses and different liquors.

The name tiramisu comes from the Italian phrase "tirami su" which translates to "pick-me up", which probably refers to the effects of the caffeine and cocoa used in the recipe.
2. What is the best description of a "widow's walk"?

Answer: A rooftop platform used to watch ships coming in and out of port.

A widow's walk is a railed rooftop platform that is usually found on coastal houses erected in the 18th century. The term comes from the idea that sailors wives would pace around the platform watching anxiously for their husbands' ships to come into port.

As being a mariner was a dangerous occupation, these women were often left widowed. Widow's walks were probably used for a variety of things including simple decoration.
3. In which of these sports would you use an implement known as a xistera?

Answer: Jai alai

Similar to the sport of pelota, jai alai is an indoor sport (usually) that involves bouncing a small ball off a wall with a long woven basket-type scoop known as a xistera. The ball is made of strands of metal that are woven tightly together, and then are covered with goat skin.

The sport comes from the Basque areas of Spain and France, and is very popular in the U.S. and the Philippines.
4. Which country is home to the beautiful tree-laden mountain range known as The Black Forest?

Answer: Germany

The Black Forest gets its name from the densely packed conifers which grow in the area and leave the forest floor in darkness. Found in southwestern Germany, this beautiful woodland is only a fraction of the size it used to be. The logging industry has taken its toll.

The main industry in the area is tourism, with visitors eager to walk the pristine long-distance trails which can be hiked, biked, and skied in the winter.
5. Who the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century?

Answer: Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 until 1990. Nicknamed the "Iron Lady" because of her uncompromising leadership skills, she was also the first woman to hold this position. Politics aside, Baroness Thatcher was a wonderful example to all young women that nothing is impossible.
6. What would a dactyloscopist be most likely to examine?

Answer: Fingerprints

A dactyloscopist is a specialist in the field of fingerprint identification classification, and examination. This field of study is used in criminal forensics, as well as in the creation of security systems. A dactyloscopist can study the prints of both hands and feet, as both are unique to each individual.
7. Which of the following options was adopted as the legal currency in the unified country of Vietnam in 1978?

Answer: Dong

The dong was first issued in 1946 as a replacement for the French Indochinese piastre which was being used at the time. Since that time there have been many changes to the currency and its value. Chronic inflation caused rapid devaluation of the dong at the end of the 20th century.
8. Which of these British musicians was part of the English-American supergroup known as The Traveling Wilburys?

Answer: George Harrison

The Traveling Wilburys consisted of ex-Beatle George Harrison, as well as Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynn--all of whom had their own successful music careers with other groups and as solo artists. This wonderful mix of talent put out an album in 1988, and another one in 1990 following Orbison's death.
9. When they pull beer wagons, the beautiful Budweiser Clydesdales are usually accompanied by which breed of dog?

Answer: Dalmatian

Each team of horses is accompanied by two obedience-trained Dalmatians. This has been a tradition since the 1950s and comes from the historical practice of leaving dogs to guard the wagon and team while the driver made his delivery inside. Today the dogs run alongside the wagons or are seated next to the driver.
10. Where is the best place to search if I am looking for my pons?

Answer: In my head

My pons is found inside my head, as is yours, directly above the medulla. This important body part helps control a variety of things such as bladder control, facial expressions, swallowing, eye movement and equilibrium. Damage to this part of the brain can cause locked-in syndrome, an incurable disorder in which the patient is awake but cannot move or communicate due to complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles.
