Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is eisbein?

Answer: pickled pork hocks

Boil 'em up, serve with sauerkraut and lots of hot mustard. Incidentally, the water that the pork hocks have been boiled in makes a wonderful base for pea soup.
2. Which of these devices is an application of Pascal's Law?

Answer: hydraulic jack

Pascal's Law says that "changes in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest are transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid and act in all directions." ("Conceptual Physics," copyright 1993, HarperCollins College Publishers.)
3. Who is Travis McGee's sidekick?

Answer: Meyer

Travis McGee is the hero of John D. MacDonald's long running 'color' series. We never learn Dr. Meyer's first name. Meyer Meyer is a character in the 87th Precinct series written by Ed McBain, and Fibber McGee and Molly were an old-time radio series.
4. Do all people with albinism (please don't call them albinos) have pink eyes?

Answer: No

Although some people with albinism have reddish eyes, most have blue eyes, and some have brown or hazel. Many do, however, have some degree of visual impairment.
5. What poem is this from? "... Notice Neptune, though, Taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity, Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!"

Answer: My Last Duchess

This is one of Robert Browning's most famous poems.
6. Who was Queen Ranavalona?

Answer: a queen of Madagascar

Queen of Madagascar from 1828 to 1861, she was by all accounts something of a tyrant. Accused of poisoning her husband to gain the throne, she then killed off most of her family members, and cut off almost all contact to the outside world. During her bloody reign, she is accused of enslaving and murdering tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of her subjects.
7. H. A. Rey, the creator of "Curious George" also wrote

Answer: The Stars - A new way to see them

This guide to the stars was first published in 1952. It uses a simple and easy-to-remember system for identifying constellations, and is a very useful resource for any beginning star-gazer, or anyone who is teaching star recognition to children.
8. Which is not a Canadian place-name?

Answer: Moose Antler

There's a Moose Jaw, Moose Factory, Moose Lake, Moose Heights, and Moose Mountain, but no Moose Antler. All the other places named are in southern Alberta.
9. In Richard Simmons' "Sweatin' to the Oldies '2'" exercise video, to which song do we do the final stretch?

Answer: Pretty Woman

An exercise video is one movie that you see over and over again, or, at least, you're supposed to.
10. Between which two rooms is there a secret passage in the American game "Clue" (also known as "Cluedo")?

Answer: lounge and conservatory

There is also a secret passage between the study and the kitchen.
11. Who was the 'singing brakeman'?

Answer: Jimmie Rodgers

A 1996 tribute CD featured artists as diverse as Bono, Bob Dylan, and Van Morrison. Some songs of his more well-known songs are "Waiting for a Train", "He's in the Jailhouse Now", and "T for Texas".
12. What pictures are on Irish coins? (prior to the introduction of the euro)

Answer: animals

On one side a harp, and on the other, beautiful representations of many different, mostly domestic, animals. I have a 1933 1/2d with a charming sow and litter of piglets.
13. Which is not a German beer?

Answer: Tuborg

Tuborg is made in Denmark.
14. What 1953 movie starred Lauren Bacall, Betty Grable, and Marilyn Monroe?

Answer: How to Marry a Millionaire

The name says it all. Three young women plot to meet eligible, rich, men, but opt for true love in the end. Marilyn Monroe plays a ditsy blonde (big surprise there) who is extremely nearsighted but too vain to wear her glasses. This was a remake of 1932's "The Greeks had a Word for Them" in which Betty Grable had a bit part.
15. What is the common English name for the yoga position Bhujangasana?

Answer: cobra

The cobra pose tones and strengthens the back and abdominal muscles.
