Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country is the volcano Novarupta located in?

Answer: U.S.A.

Novarupta is a U.S. volcano located in the state of Alaska. Its two-day eruption in June of 1912 is said to be the most powerful volcano eruption of the 20th century. Several other volcanoes such as Pavlof, Ukinrek, and Veniaminof are located in Alaska.
2. How many Oscars did the 1964 film "My Fair Lady" starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison win at the 1965 Academy Awards?

Answer: 8

"My Fair Lady" scooped up 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (George Cukor), and Best Actor (Rex Harrison). Audrey Hepburn did not even receive a nomination for her role as Eliza Doolittle however. The Oscar instead went to Julie Andrews for her title role in "Mary Poppins" which many deemed fitting since Andrews had played Eliza Doolittle in the theatrical version of the play yet was replaced for the film by Hepburn.
3. Which of the following is NOT an example of a correct collective noun for the subject "dragons".

Answer: A siege of dragons

Siege is the collective noun for bitterns. Other examples of collective nouns are an armada of ships, a rainbow of butterflies, a coven of witches, and a bevy of beauties.
4. Emily Brontė was the youngest of the three Brontė sisters.

Answer: False

Charlotte was the oldest, followed by Emily and then Anne. The sisters were English writers whose contributions to the world of literature include "Jane Eyre" (written by Charlotte), "Wuthering Heights" (written by Emily) and "Agnes Grey" (written by Anne).
5. What is Venetia Burney famous for?

Answer: naming the planet Pluto

On February 18, 1930 American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh discovered a new planet. About a month later, an 11-year-old English girl named Venetia Burney heard about the discovery and suggested the name Pluto to her grandfather. He sent the name along to an astronomer in England who then sent it to the Lowell Observatory in Arizona where Tombaugh was employed.

Pluto was downgraded from its planetary status in 2006.
6. The ownership of skunks in the USA varies from state to state. Some states allow it so long as the owner has a permit or the skunk is bred within the state while others forbid it completely. Which of the following states prohibits skunk ownership?

Answer: California

California is one of many states including Alaska, North Dakota, Texas, and Vermont that do not allow the ownership of skunks. It is legal however in Pennsylvania, Florida, and West Virginia if the owner has a permit. I had a chance to hold a pet skunk once and it was a very sweet and cuddly little animal. No stink either!
7. How many of Henry VIII's wives were named Catherine (or a variant of)?

Answer: 3

Henry VIII was married to (in order) Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. Only Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were beheaded.
8. Jell-O is the official snack food of which state of the U.S.A.?

Answer: Utah

In 2001, Bill Cosby, the spokesman for Jell-O, urged the Utah State Legislature to make Jell-O the official state snack, which they did. The state had long been known for their penchant for Jell-O and decided to make something of it when Iowa once beat them out as the state with the most gelatin consumption.
9. What is a radula?

Answer: the toothy tongue a snail uses to scrape its food

Snails use their radula, a tongue with several sharp teeth, to tear up food for consumption. The process of scooping up food though wears down the front teeth and so new teeth are formed and eventually replace the worn ones. These teeth are also covered in a mucus which allows food particles to be swallowed easier.
10. Michael Shaara won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for his book "The Killer Angels". Which war was the setting for his novel?

Answer: The American Civil War

Shaara's novel is set during the American Civil War. It follows four days during the Battle of Gettysburg from the points of view of the commanding officers from both the Confederate and Union armies.
