Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Solve for x: 2(x) + 11 = x + 15

Answer: 4

To solve this problem you must subtract "x" from both sides. This gives you the equation (x + 11 = 15). Then you subtract 11 from both sides. This gives you the equation (x = 4). Four is your answer.
2. Which of these sentences is correct?

Answer: The woman who is wearing black is my sister.

This type of question is a favorite of the SAT test makers. There is a mnemonic that can be used to remember this rule. "People are not whiches."
3. Which of the following equations is equivalent to 4(x) + 12 = 8?

Answer: 2(x) + 6 = 4

To find a parallel equation you have to divide the entire equation by a common factor. In this problem the common factor is two. If you divide the entire original equation by two, you will get (2(x) + 6 = 4).
4. Which of the following sentences uses a comma improperly?

Answer: Which road goes to, Chicago?

A comma acts as a pause in the sentence. It can either set off a subordinate clause or join two independent clauses. "Which road goes to" is a dependent clause, it makes no sense on its own. "Chicago" is just the name of a city, it is not an independent, dependent, or subordinate clause. Therefore, this sentence does not need a comma.
5. Solve the following equation: sin^2 @ + cos^2 @ = ? (@ is the symbol used for an angle.)

Answer: 1

This is a basic trigonometric identity. Sin^2 @ + cos^2 @ always equals 1. To prove this I will use the three sides of a right triangle a, b, and c. First, you set sin @ = a/c and cos @ = b/c, giving you the new equation: (a/c)^2 + (b/c)^2 = 1
Then, you simplify the equation to a^2/c^2 + b^2/c^2 = 1. Now you have a common denominator, so you can add the numerators. The new equation is (a^ 2+ b^ 2)/ c^ 2. Next, we know from the Pythagorean theorem that a^2 + b^2 = c^2, so we substitute that into the equation. This gives us c^2/c^2 = 1, which is true.
Of course it is much easier just to remember that sin^2 @ + cos^2 @ = 1.
6. This following sentence is correct: I am to busy to exercise.

Answer: False

This question tests your knowledge of the forms of "to". The proper form here is the word "too". The word "too" acts as an indicator of an extreme, in this sentence the person is extremely busy.
7. In a right triangle, if a= 3 and b= 4, what does "c" equal?

Answer: 5

There are two ways to solve this geometry problem. The first is to use the formula for the sides of a right triangle: a^2 + b^2 = c^2. If you plug in the numbers for the letters, you will get that c= 5. The other way to solve this problem is to remember that one of the common right triangles is called a 3-4-5 triangle. Given that two of the sides are 3 and 4, you can automatically know that the third side is 5.
8. Fill in the blank with the correct punctuation for the following sentence: What were you thinking __________

Answer: ?

This sentence is clearly a question. Therefore the period is not the correct punctuation. The dash and the comma are also not correct because the sentence is a complete sentence.
9. If the average of 5 test scores is 90, and four of the test scores are 90, 89, 75, and 98 respectively, what is the fifth score?

Answer: 98

To solve this problem you multiply the total number of scores by the average of the scores. Then, you subtract the given test scores. You are left with the score of 98.
10. Read the following short story and then answer the question at the end. One day, Carol went to her father's house in Nebraska. His name is Bob. While she was visiting her father, she observed three things about him. First, he was having trouble walking. Second, he seemed to be short of breath. Third, his clothes were so dirty he must have worn the same outfit for the past week. What is the point-of-view of this story?

Answer: third person limited

Carol is observing and judging her father's activities, so the narrator is not omniscient.
