Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pysanka is the art of decorating an Easter egg in various traditional designs using the batik method. In which country did this originate?

Answer: Ukraine

It is believed that the art of pysanka originated back to ancient times, although there are no examples left due to the fragility of egg shells. The designs are drawn on to the egg shell using a wax-resist (batik) method. The designs can include a triangle (earth, wind, fire), a cross depicting the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west), the sun and stars which refer to the Slavic sun god, Dazhboh, and the fish or the fisher of men.

2. What is the name of the jeweller who was responsible for decorating some the most beautiful Easter eggs in the world?

Answer: Peter Karl Faberge

Russian jeweller Peter Karl Faberge took over his fathers jewellery business in St. Petersburg in 1870, creating items in silver and gold, jade and other gemstones. Many of his designs were inspired in the style of Louis XVI. Opening shops in London, Kiev and Moscow, he became renowned for his jewelled Easter eggs. He was once commissioned by the Czar Alexander III to make an Easter egg for his wife the Empress Maria. What an eggstremely lucky girl she was.

3. Each year in the United States, the annual Easter Egg Roll is held on the lawn of which important house?

Answer: White House

Children who get to attend this Easter activity should thank former President Rutherford B. Hayes. When the Egg Roll first began, it was held on the Capitol grounds, but an 1877 law put an end to that. Congressmen were bothered by the damage to grounds from the playing children, and the budget wasn't large enough to finish the landscaping and maintain it, so the Capitol grounds were closed to the children. President Rutherford and his wife Lucy began opening the grounds of the White House for the Egg Roll in 1878. Today, each child receives a wooden presidential egg with the signatures of the President and First Lady on it as a souvenir.

4. According to the 2010 issue of "The Guinness World Records", how heavy was the largest Easter egg ever produced?

Answer: 1200 kg

Amazingly, and as outlined in the 2010 "Guinness World Records", the largest Easter egg ever made at that time was more than 25 feet high, and weighed 1,200kgs. It was made in Belgium in 2005, and had to be supported by a metal framework. In my view, that is truly "eggspansive" and was probably also very "eggspensive"!

5. Beautiful results can be obtained by dying egg shells with simple vegetable dyes. What colour would your egg turn out if you dyed it using red cabbage?

Answer: Blue

Red cabbage juice is fascinating stuff - not only does it change colour when it's cooked, it can also be used as a pH indicator as it changes colour when mixed with acids or alkalies. Other natural egg dyes include onion skins (for orange or red eggs), beetroot/beet (red/pink), turmeric (yellow) and coffee (brown).

6. There are Easter egg traditions all throughout the world. People from one country in particular normally paint their Easter eggs red. Can you tell me which country that is?

Answer: Greece

Red eggs symbolize the blood of Christ. Greeks also paint eggs in different colours, but red is predominant.

7. In religions which associate Easter eggs with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, what does the hard shell of the egg represent?

Answer: The Tomb of Christ

While the hard shell represents the Tomb of Christ, cracking the shell symbolises his resurrection from the dead. Many of these eggs are also dyed red to represent the shed blood of Jesus. This practice can be found in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. So next time you're about to chomp into an Easter egg, stop for one second just to give this a little thought.

8. Which chocolate company produced the first chocolate egg in England?'

Answer: Fry

It is believed chocolate eggs originated in Germany and France during the 19th century. J. S. Fry & Sons Limited made the first English chocolate egg in 1873, followed two years later by Cadbury's.

9. In 2008, approximately how many chocolate Easter eggs were consumed in the U.K. over the Easter holiday?

Answer: 80 Million

Keep your toothbrush handy! On average, 10-14 year old children consume 13 Easter eggs each. That's almost 13,000 calories and 650 grams of fat. Good thing it's only once a year!

10. On average, how many eggs do rabbits lay at a time?

Answer: They don't

Rabbits give birth to live young in litters of 4-12 babies, called kits. The kits are born blind, without any fur, and are completely helpless, the poor little things. By five weeks old they're ready to be weaned, and by the age of just six months, the female is ready to mate. The males takes seven months to reach maturity - they must have to grow more fur on their chests. The breeding season of a rabbit lasts nine months, but each pregnancy lasts only thirty days, so Mrs Rabbit can give birth to a lot of babies during that time, and indeed can still be producing children when her great-grandkits are also being born.
