Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a synonym for graveyard that begins with a "c" and has 8 letters. What is it? (Spelling counts!)

Answer: cemetery

A recent survey I saw regarding this question claimed that only about half of all adult Americans could spell this word correctly. The most common mistake is "cemetary". I guess this is a good way to test the survey.
2. Who was the Greek god of the Underworld?

Answer: Hades

Hades was the Greek god of the Underworld. To the Greeks, the word was also synonymous with the Underworld itself. Pluto was the Roman equivalent.
3. Also in Greek Mythology, what was the name of the boatman who charged a toll to take spirits into the Underworld?

Answer: Charon

The first commercial ferry service, it was one way. The dead were buried with coins so that they would have money to pay the fare. Charon is also the name of the sole moon of the planet Pluto.
4. Across what river did the Greek "boatman" take newly deceased spirits, according to common belief?

Answer: Styx

In mythology, Achilles was dipped into the Styx as an infant to confer immunity from harm. He was dangled by his ankle. This point didn't touch the water, and the resulting weak spot was his downfall. Hence, the Achilles heel. The river was also said to steal memories from those who swam in it. Scholars point out that it was actually the river Acheron ('river of woe') across which Charon ferried his charges.

The common misconception appears to have originated with Dante.
5. What is the technical term for "mercy killing"?

Answer: euthanasia

From the Greek "Thanatos".
6. What is the medical slang term for dead or very nearly dead, based on the image on the display screens of key monitoring instruments?

Answer: flatline

This was the source for the title of the eerie Kiefer Sutherland thriller "Flatliners", in which thrill-seeking scientific students are flatlined for a time and then revived.
7. What is the most commonly known embalming fluid?

Answer: formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is also unwisely and illicitly used as a recreational drug. However, at least the users just might save money on an undertaker.
8. In spelunking (cave-exploration), a dead cavern is one...

Answer: that is without running water and is no longer being formed

Minerals carried by water over great spans of time form cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites. When the source of the water no longer drains into the cave for whatever reason, the formations become dry and brittle, and the cave is termed "dead".
9. What is the title of the Robin Williams movie in which he dies and then tries to rescue his wife from Hell?

Answer: What Dreams May Come

A sappy movie with very cool special effects.
10. In poker, what is the "dead man's hand"?

Answer: Two pair, Aces and Eights

Although the Ace of Spades is known as the "death card", the "dead man's hand" is Aces and Eights. According to legend, "Wild Bill" Hickock was shot in the back during a poker game while holding Aces and Eights.
