Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did The Beatles record their final new song as a foursome, "I Me Mine"?

Answer: 1970

The song was written and sung by George Harrison, and is also the title of Harrison's autobiography. The song was released on the "Let It Be" album. The decision to include the song on the album was a last minute pick, so the group needed to quickly make a formal recording, and quick. John Lennon was not part of the recording, as he was on vacation in Denmark at the time. Lennon had privately left The Beatles, so it was unclear whether he'd show up to begin with.
2. The last "Peanuts" comic strip was published on February 13, 2000. Coincidentally, Peanuts creator Charles Schulz passed away the night before.

Answer: True

Due to being diagnosed with colon cancer, Schulz had slowed down his production of the weekly comic strip, and published his last daily "Peanuts" comic strip on January 3, 2000, but there was five Sunday "Peanuts". The last one was published on February 13, 2000, the day after Schulz passed away from a heart attack in his sleep.

In total 17,897 strips were (in its peak) published by 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries. Repeats of "Peanuts" are still syndicated throughout many newspapers.
3. What car rolled off the production line for the final time on May 26, 1927?

Answer: Model T

For 19 years, the Ford Motor Company produced the Model T, the car that is regarded as the one that made car-buying affordable. Some of Henry Ford's innovations, including the production line over individual hand-building each car. In 1909, the standard four-door touring car cost $850 (about $22,000 now US).

By the 1920's however, the cost for one was as low as $250 (only $3,000 now US). In its final year of production, the 15 millionth Model T was released. Not until 1972, did any carmaker surpass Model T production, when the Volkswagen Beetle became #1.
4. The last recorded sighting of the dodo occurred in which century?

Answer: 17th century

The dodo, or "Raphus cucullatus" was native to the Indian Ocean archipelago country of Mauritus. The Dutch first mentioned the existence of the dodo in 1598. All the birds were killed off by hungry soliders or domesticated animals. After the dodo was mentioned in "Alice in Wonderland", the flightless bird has become a staple in pop culture.
5. In what year did Babe Ruth hit the last six of his 714 career home runs?

Answer: 1935

Ruth hit homers 712, 713, and 714 in one game with the Boston Braves, his only season with the team, and his last in the big leagues. After his retirement, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the first class to enter. His 714 homers were the most in MLB history, until Hank Aaron hit #715 in 1974. Ruth's record of 60 home runs in one season stood until 1961, when Roger Maris hit 61.
6. Which play was the final one written by William Shakespeare, which he co-wrote with John Fletcher?

Answer: The Two Noble Kinsmen

Written in 1613, the play's plot is derived from "The Knight's Tale" in Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales". The play is believed by scholars to be written by both Shakespeare and John Fletcher. The play wasn't released until 1634, about 18 years after Shakespeare's death. "The Tempest" is believed to be the final play written entirely by Shakespeare.
7. Of these famous inventors, which one was the last to pass away, doing so in 1948?

Answer: Orville Wright

Orville Wright was 76 when he passed away on January 30, 1948. Along with brother Wilbur, the two bicycle shop clerks pioneered the first "flying machine", later to be called airplane. Thomas Edison, of lightbulb, phonograph, and camera fame, died on October 18, 1931. Edison held over 1000 American patents to his name, as well as many in the UK, France, and Germany.

In 1922, inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell passed away at the age of 75 on August 2. Bell's work towards developing a telephone was influenced by both his mom and wife being deaf. American statesmen, and inventor of bifocals, Benjamin Franklin, passed away at 1790. Franklin was an avid chess player, and signed the Declaration of Independence.
8. Which year was the final time the Stanley Cup was won by a team that was not part of the National Hockey League?

Answer: 1925

The Victoria Cougars of the West Coast Hockey League beat the NHL's Montreal Canadiens three games to one in 1925 to win the Stanley Cup. From 1915 to 1925, the winner of the National Hockey League (which was called the National Hockey Association until the NHL was formed in 1917) would play the winner of the WCHL for the Cup.

In 1926, the WCHL dissolved and the NHL claimed the trophy to the winner of its league. In 1947, the Cup became control of the NHL's and is awarded yearly to the winner of the NHL playoffs.
9. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the last US president to serve more than two terms.

Answer: True

FDR served four terms from 1933 to 1945, when he died from a stroke during his record fourth term. Roosevelt lived most of his time in office with polio. Before Roosevelt, it was an unwritten rule to not run for a third term. Roosevelt used creative strategy, and his fan base, to win a third and then fourth term in the White House during the Great Depression and World War II.

In 1947, the 22nd Amendment was added to the Constitution to limit future presidents to two terms.
10. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was the last publicly performed song by Elvis, which was sung at a June, 1977 concert where?

Answer: Indianapolis

The last song released during Elvis' lifetime was "Way Down", which reached #1 on the US country and UK pop charts days after his death on August 16, 1977. Elvis struggled with drug abuse in the later years of his life, and was almost impossible to understand in some of his final concerts. Elvis' cousin Billy Smith said that Elvis reminded him of Howard Hughes in his final weeks, as he would sit and remember sketches from Monty Python, and his own adventures, but have paranoid obsessions. Elvis was 42 when he passed away.
