Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Adams was the first Vice President of the United States under the Constitution. Who was the second?

Answer: Thomas Jefferson

While all four men were early Vice Presidents, Thomas Jefferson was the second (1797-1801). The original guidelines of the constitution stated that the presidential candidate who received the second largest number of electoral votes became Vice President. Jefferson (Republican or Democratic-Republican) belonged to a different political party than the President, John Adams (Federalist).

Although the two men had worked together during the Revolutionary War, they grew apart as they pursued different political goals in the 1790s.

After Jefferson's presidency, when both men were in retirement, they became friendlier again and began their famous exchange of letters.
2. William Hartnell was the first actor to portray "The Doctor" on the iconic British sci-fi show "Doctor Who". Who was the second actor to portray "The Doctor" on the television show?

Answer: Patrick Troughton

The key here is the phrase "on the television show". Cushing did portray an inventor named "Doctor Who" in two feature films "Dr. Who and the Daleks" (1965) and "Daleks--Invasion Earth 2150 AD" (1966). Troughton, Pertwee and Baker are the second, third, and fourth Doctors, respectively. Patrick Troughton portrayed the Doctor for three seasons (1966-1969).

The on-air explanation for the change in the Doctor's appearance was that the Time Lords periodically underwent a change called regeneration.

This plot device has allowed the series to air for decades while changing the lead actor every few years.
3. Kamehameha I unified the Hawaiian islands into one kingdom in the early 1800s. Who was his successor, the second king of Hawaii?

Answer: Kamehameha II

All four were later monarchs of Hawaii, but King Kamehameha II was the son and heir of King Kamehameha I. His birth name was Liholiho. He ruled Hawaii for five years (1819-1824). His father, King Kamehameha I, is the subject of one of Hawaii's two statues in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol Building.
4. One of the most profitable film series in history is the James Bond series of films from EON Productions. While "Doctor No" (1962) was the first film in the series, what was the second film?

Answer: From Russia with Love

"From Russia with Love" (1963) starred Sean Connery as James Bond and Daniela Bianchi as Tatiana Romanova. The film was directed by Terrence Young. The executive producers were the heads of EON Productions, Harry Saltzman and Albert "Cubby" Broccoli. Featured in the film was the first appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Major Boothroyd, or "Q." He presented Bond with the trick briefcase, the major gadget in the film.
5. I bet you didn't think the Bible had a sequel. The New Testament book "Acts of the Apostles" was written by the author of one of the Gospels. Which Gospel author wrote Acts?

Answer: Luke

It is thought that Luke's Gospel and Acts were originally published as one work. Luke's Gospel ends and Acts begins with the Jesus's ascension into Heaven. From there, the narrative tells the story of the early Christian church and the role of the apostles, including Peter and Paul.
6. One of the nicknames for Delaware is "The First State". What is considered the second state in terms of order of admission to the Union?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Delaware ratified the Constitution on December 7, 1787 by a unanimous vote, 30-0. Pennsylvania ratified the Constitution on December 12, 1787 by a vote of 46-23. New Jersey would also ratify in 1787. Eight of the 13 states, including New York, Virginia, and Massachusetts, ratified in 1788. North Carolina ratified in 1789 and Rhode Island in 1790.

The Constitutional Convention took place in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787. I find it interesting that the first three ratifications took place in the states that essentially surround Philadelphia.
7. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" was a popular novel by Mark Twain that was published in 1876. Which character from that novel is the main character in the sequel, published eight years later?

Answer: Huckleberry Finn

Ernest Hemingway once said, "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn'." The other characters are from other Mark Twain novels. Hank Morgan is the main character from "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" (1889). Tom Canty is one of the main characters from "The Prince and the Pauper" (1881). Colonel Mulberry Sellers is from "The American Claimant" (1892).
8. In Super Bowl I, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. Which team won Super Bowl II?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

Until the 1970 merger of the National Football League and the American Football League, the game was known as the NFL-AFL World Championship Game. Green Bay defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14. The game was played in the Orange Bowl on January 14, 1968. Packers quarterback Bart Starr was the MVP of the game.
9. For this question, we'll switch things a bit. Numa Pompilius is traditionally described as the second king of Rome. Who is traditionally described as the first king of Rome?

Answer: Romulus

Romulus and his brother Remus were said to have founded Rome in 753 BC. Romulus later killed his brother Remus in a disagreement over who would be the better leader. After his death, Romulus was identified with the Roman god Quirinus.
10. The sequel to "Rocky" is the aptly named "Rocky II". What is the outcome of the rematch between Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed that concludes "Rocky II"?

Answer: Rocky wins by knockout.

Rocky Balboa was portrayed by Sylvester Stallone and Apollo Creed by Carl Weathers. As in "Rocky", the fight goes the full 15 rounds. Apollo was leading by points when Rocky hit him with a mighty swing which knocked both men to the canvas. Rocky is able to get back on his feet before the count of ten, but Apollo is not.

As is common with the "Rocky" movies, the conclusion of "Rocky II" is used as the start of "Rocky III".
