Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which question is most difficult to answer without the book in front of you?

Answer: How many galleons apiece does Slughorn think he can get for the unicorn hairs?

I dislike quiz questions that you can only answer if: 1) You have a photographic memory; or 2) you have the book in front of you.
2. Which question is next-to-impossible to answer?

Answer: How many casual girlfriends does Joey have during Seasons 1-3?

This question is next-to-impossible to answer unless you have Seasons 1-3 on VHS or DVD and you meticulously watch each and every episode.
3. Which question is both boring and troublesome to answer?

Answer: In Book 6, how many Death Eaters do we encounter?

To answer such a question, you'd have to start on page 1 and meticulously count each Death Eater as he or she appears. Plus, do we know FOR SURE that Snape is a true Death Eater? How about those who are (perhaps falsely) accused of being Death Eaters? Do we count them, or not?
4. True or false? The following question would bore most "Friends" fans: By the end of the series, what does Chandler do for a living?

Answer: False

No, if you're a "Friends" fan, that's an interesting question. Chandler changes careers during the series from some hard-to-describe job involving computers to advertising. In order to switch, he has to forego a substantial income and work as an intern for a while.
5. Which question is tedious to answer?

Answer: How many times does Uncle Vernon speak during Dumbledore's visit?

Boring, boring, boring, and impossible to answer without the book in front of you.
6. Which types of questions are tedious, boring, and mind numbing?

Answer: all of these

I like questions that you can answer by using common sense, interest in the topic, and a reasonable amount of prior knowledge about it.
7. True or false? In some funtrivia categories, it is against the rules to write questions whose answers depend on having the book in front of you.

Answer: True

In the "Harry Potter" category under "For Children," this is the case. One of the rules states: "No very specific or obscure questions that can be answered by most players only if they have the book in front of them."
8. Why is the following type of question irritating? When did Harry go to bed following the second Quidditch match? A) at 9 pm B) at 9:30 pm C) at 10 pm D) at 10:30 pm

Answer: The question is irritating for all of these reasons.

A better question might be: Why does McLaggen play Keeper in Gryffindor's second Quidditch match? OR How does Harry sustain an injury in Quidditch match number two for the Gryffindor team?
9. What's wrong with the following fill-in-the-blank question? In Book 6, which Gryffindor team members play in all three Quidditch matches?

Answer: There are too many different ways to write the names.

Fill-in-the-blank answers (as I've learned via my fractured word quizzes) need to be very short, easy to spell, usually without punctuation, and without possibilities for variation. By the way, the answer to that question is the following: Ginny, Demelza, and the two Beaters. Team members who each sit out at least one game are Ron, Harry, and Katie Bell. Dean Thomas and Cormac McLaggen play as substitutes.
10. Why is it a good idea to omit questions such as those I've complained about in Items 1-9?

Answer: all of these reasons are valid ones

If I take a quiz that has two or more questions like the ones I've been complaining about, I usually rate it "Poor" (unless the rest of it is absolutely wonderful).

Sorry to seem like such a crank, and thanks for taking the quiz! I wrote my first quiz in May of 2001, and this is my 201st one. Cheers, Robyn
