Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When nature hits back, let it pass and kick some butt! After being behind in his sculling race at the 1928 Olympics, nature threw a further spanner in the works by sending a mother duck and her ducklings across the path of Australian Bobby Pearce. Pearce slowed down to let the ducks pass yet still managed to win his race and recorded the fastest time in that round. In which city were these Olympic Games held?

Answer: Amsterdam

Bobby Pearce went on to win the gold medal in the single sculls at the same Olympic Games. Pearce also became the first Australian to successfully defend an Olympic title when he won the gold again at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1932, and was World Champion from 1933-38.
2. When nature hits back, evacuate! One of the biggest cyclones in Australian history hit Northern Queensland in February of 2011. Nearly the size of the USA, this cyclone created widespread devastation across much of northern Queensland yet (thankfully) only one life was lost. What was the name given to the cyclone?

Answer: Yasi

Cyclone Yasi was over 500km wide and, if laid over a map of the USA, stretched from Pennsylvania to Nevada and from Georgia to Canada, most of Mexico would also be hit if a storm of Yasi's magnitude passed over this area. Yasi would also cover most of Asia and Europe (separately).

Cyclones Larry, George and Tracy were previous tropical cyclones to hit Australia, with each of these names being retired. Cyclone names are retired by either the World Meteorological Organization's RA V Tropical Cyclone Committee or by the Bureau of Meteorology. Names are retired after a storm has caused loss of life and/or high amounts of damage.
3. When nature hits back, be prepared for the clean up! The 2010 cleanup of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was hampered when mother nature decided to send tropical storm Bonnie its way. Which company, headquartered in the UK, was responsible for the oil spill and consequential (massive) cleanup?

Answer: British Petroleum (BP)

BP operated the Macondo Prospect when Deepwater Horizon (the semi-submersible Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit) became victim of a fire started by an explosion on the rig.

Workers were required to leave the cleanup site and other wells in the area in preparation for the storm which fizzled out not long after it 'started'. At the time of the spill it was the largest accidental marine oil spill in history. Four months after an explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others, the wellhead was capped and the leak stopped. It was estimated that 4.9 million barrels of crude oil leaked from the well over that period.

BHP Billiton (Australia), ExxonMobil (USA) and Imperial Oil (Canada) are oil exploration and production companies with no ties to the Deep Horizon oil spill.
4. When nature hits back, don't use it to further your political ambitions! In January 2010, Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake. Help poured in from all corners of the world. Which of the following celebrities helped to raise funds for Haiti and later also proclaimed he would run for the Haitian Presidential elections that year?

Answer: Wyclef Jean

Wyclef Jean is a Haitian American musician and producer. His uncle, Raymond Joseph, was the Haitian ambassador to the United States when the earthquake struck. Jean, along with his uncle, did his bit to create awareness regarding the tragedy and help mobilise funds for the same.

In August 2010, Jean confirmed reports that he would run for the Presidency of Haiti as a candidate for the Viv Ansamn party. While this move came in for quite a bit of criticism, he was eventually ruled ineligible by Haiti's Electoral Council as he didn't meet the condition of being a Haitian resident for at least five years.
5. When nature hits back, read a book (or just watch the movie)! First published in 1997 this book was written by Sebastian Junger and centered around the crew of the Andrea Gail getting caught in the Halloween Nor'easter of 1991. A movie (based on and sharing the title of the book) was released in 2000 starring George Clooney and Diane Lane. What was the name of the book and subsequent film?

Answer: The Perfect Storm

The 'Halloween Nor'easter of 1991' is more commonly known as the '1991 Perfect Storm'. The crew of the Andrea Gail were lost at sea during this storm whilst fishing for swordfish. The first part of the book covers the lives of the lost crew members while the second part covers the events during the storm and the following rescue attempts.

Whilst there is some conjecture about the accuracy of the book, there is more concerning the film. The film claims to be 'based-on' the events and not a re-creation - a whole world of difference when lawyers get involved! (not that they were in this case).

All incorrect answer options are 'disaster' films pertaining to water and storms.
6. When nature hits back, pray! In the New Testament of the Bible, we read an account of Jesus and his disciples travelling by sea, when they suddenly find themselves in the midst of a violent storm. Which body of water were they crossing when this incident occurred?

Answer: Sea of Galilee

This episode is narrated in three of the four gospels, namely Matthew, Mark and Luke. Jesus was fast asleep in the stern when the storm broke out and waves started lashing the boat. Fearing they would capsize, the disciples rushed to wake Jesus. He got up and commanded the waves to be still, thus calming the storm.
7. When nature hits back, take it like a man! King Alexander of Greece died in 1920 after contracting sepsis. Alexander was actually defending an attack on his dog when he was bitten by the perpetrator. What animal was he bitten by?

Answer: Monkey

As Alexander fended off the monkey with a stick, it managed to bite him on the hand. Another monkey came to the defence of its mate and also bit the King. King Alexander died less than a month after being bitten in October of 1920.
8. When nature hits back, remember the advice of your ancestors! In 2004, a deep sea earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, spawned a series of tsunamis that caused widespread devastation in over ten countries. The aboriginal people of which Indian island were able to escape relatively unscathed due to the wisdom gleaned from ancient folklore?

Answer: Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been home to aboriginal tribes like the the Onges, Jarawas, Sentinalese, and Great Andamanese for centuries. The majority of these tribes still live largely secluded from modern civilization. As a result, they have learned to identify warning signs in the cries of birds and animals and also detect changes in the swimming patterns of marine creatures.

Their ancient folklore also contains references to similar such events in the past where earthquakes were followed by a 'wall of water'. By escaping to higher ground before the disaster struck, the aboriginals of these islands were able to escape the devastating tsunami with almost no loss of life.
9. When nature hits back, check with your doctor! Mosquitoes are one of the deadliest animals on the planet with people dying left, right and centre (well not quite but you get the idea) from their bites. Of the following options, which is NOT considered a mosquito-borne disease?

Answer: HIV

When mosquitoes bite, they suck the blood from their victim whilst transferring saliva, anticoagulants, parasites and other 'nasties' into the victim's blood stream. This is how diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes. Most of the mosquito-borne diseases are pretty nasty with symptoms ranging from an itchy area at the site of the bite, to flu-like symptoms, to coma or death. Pretty scary!

After initial concerns, HIV is thought to be (almost) impossible for mosquitoes to transmit due to the amount of body fluid needed to be able to transmit the virus.
10. When nature hits back, coin a new term to describe it! Which of the following weather related terms is incorrectly matched with the language it is derived from?

Answer: Tsunami - Korean

Tsunami comes from the Japanese language with 'tsu' meaning harbour and 'nami' meaning waves. Cyclone is derived from the Greek word 'kyklos' meaning circle while Hurricane is taken from the Spanish word 'huracan' which means storm. Monsoon, a tropical rainy season, comes from the Portuguese word 'moncao' which in turn is believed to have been derived from the Arabic word 'mawsim' meaning season.
