Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Authors Maxim Gorky, Isaac Babel and Osip Mandelstam have something in common, other than the fact that they were published authors. In what country did these three men reside? 'IAN' other words, what was their nationality?

Answer: Russ-IAN

These three men represent only a small cross-section of Russia's authors. Many others like Leo Tolstoy, Aleksandr Pushkin, Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova could have been included in the listing of famous Russian authors and poets.
2. Belg-IANs do NOT speak "Belgian". There is simply no such language in existence. (Bear in mind that there is also no language called "American" or "Australian" either.) So, what three MAIN languages do MOST Belgians speak as one of their first languages?

Answer: Dutch, French, German

English is often spoken as a second language by some Belgians, along with a few unofficial minority languages that are spoken as well. Primarily, Dutch (or 'Flemish') is spoken in the northern sector; French ('Walloon') in the southern part of the country, while German language usage is fairly well confined to the extreme eastern sections.
3. A legendary (and possibly mythical) king named Khun Borom Rachathiriat might possibly have spoken this language, if he in fact ever existed. What language would this have been, that was greatly influenced by both ancient China and ancient Vietnam?

Answer: Laot-IAN

The Laotian language is a part of the Tai family of languages. While the Lao have five major dialects, these dialects are so very similar that the Lao people are convinced that they all simply speak variations of the same language.
4. Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, a lady whose Anglicized name of Agnes means "little flower" or "rose", is more famously known around the world simply as the late Mother Teresa. Known for her philanthropy and her helping nature, of what nationality was she?

Answer: Alban-IAN

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910. She decided very early in life to devote herself to the work of a missionary. By age 12, she set her sights on that goal, and by 18 years of age she joined the Sisters of Loreto.

She opened the first "Home for the Dying" in Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1952, but later changed the name to "Home of the Pure Heart". Later still, Mother Teresa opened "City of Peace", a home for those stricken with leprosy.

She was once quoted as saying, "A beautiful death is for people who lived like animals to die like angels -loved and wanted".
5. English Romantic poet John Keats once constructed a new type of poetry called the "ode", which simply meant a lyrical stanza. He wrote an ode to a sentiment (melancholia), an ode to a bird (a nightingale) and an ode to a myth (Psyche). One of his odes, however was "on" an urn. What "nationality" was the urn?

Answer: Grec-IAN

The last lines to John Keats' poem "Ode on a Grecian Urn" that was published in 1920 read this way:

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,' - that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."
6. Ghaem Magham Farahani. If you think that this name is a mouthful, just try this one out - Mirza Abolghasem Ghaem Magham Farahani. Makes you kind of appreciate the abbreviated version, huh? What nationality was this former Prime Minister?

Answer: Iran-IAN

Mirza Abolghasem Ghaem Magham Farahani was an Iranian Prime Minister in the early 19th century. He was born in 1779, and first served in Mohammad Mirza's court as the chancellor. "Mirza" was more of an honorary title than a name, indicating that he served the king. Later he was betrayed by a man who would later replace him as Prime Minister and was then murdered on the orders of the king in 1835.
7. Actress Sophia Loren. Singer Dean Martin. Actor Sal Mineo. Actress Gina Lollobrigida. Which of these famous folks of Ital-IAN descent were actually BORN in Italy?

Answer: Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida

Born as Sofia Villani Scicolone, film star Sophia Loren was born in Rome, Italy. Actress Gina Lollobrigida was born in Subiaco, Italy with the name Luigina Lollobrigida.

Actor/Singer Dean Martin (Dino Paul Crocetti) was born in Steubenville, Ohio, while film and theater actor Sal Mineo (Salvatore "Sal" Mineo, Jr.) was born in the Bronx, New York.
8. Country singer Keith Urban, actor/director Heath Ledger and wildlife expert/adventurer Steve Irwin are among a listing of well-known Austral-IANs. Which of them, however, was not actually BORN in Australia?

Answer: Keith Urban

While Heath Ledger and Steve Irwin were native Australians, Keith Urban was actually born in New Zealand, and moved with his family to Australia when he was two years old. (Technically not an Australian, but VERY close!)
9. If a person lived in Sofia, vacationed on the Black Sea coast at Golden Sands or at Sunny Beach, had universal health care (yet might have to seek medical treatment in a neighboring country), and could take a train straight to Moscow or Saint Petersburg, what nationality would he or she be?

Answer: Bulgar-IAN

Those who speak Bulgarian are engaged in using the oldest written Slavic language. Generally, most words are pronounced phonetically, that is they are spelled much the same way that they sound, but there are some notable exceptions to that rule.

Bulgaria's universal health care leaves a bit to be desired. The number of doctors available has been said to exceed those of many other European nations, but specialists in certain fields are sadly lacking. There has long been a shortage of nurses as well, and due to lack of these needed specialists and nurses, many people find it necessary to seek medical care outside the country.
10. The second-largest country in the world, in terms of landmass, lies to the west of France and to the east of Taiwan. If a person hailed from this land, and told you that the name of his or her nation meant "village" or "settlement" in the native language of its inhabitants, where IAN the world would you think that they would reside? IAN other words, what would be their nationality?

Answer: Canad-IAN

Canad-IAN - Eh?

Yep. Canadians reside in the second-largest country on earth, land area-wise.

The name Canada comes from the Iroquoian word "kanata", and in that language its name means village or settlement.

Once called New France, it later was given over to the British after the War of 1812, and found itself with two new names: Upper Canada and Lower Canada. These were reunited as the Province of Canada in 1841, and in 1867 the name "Canada" was selected for the country.
