Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Site of a November horse race that is televised internationally

Answer: Melbourne

Melbourne is the largest city in the state of Victoria, of which it is the capital, and the second largest city in Australia. On the first Tuesday of November the state has a public holiday so that everyone can engage in the goings-on at Flemington Racecourse, where the parties in the parking areas are at least as much the point of the day as the races!
2. Outback station used as the setting for Colleen McCullough's book 'The Thorn Birds'

Answer: Drogheda

Although Drogheda was fictional, McCullough's descriptions of the sheep station were accurate in their depiction of the way of life that was found at that time in many parts of rural Australia. If you only know about it from the television miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain, you will not have seen the real thing - it was filmed in California for the Outback scenes, with the Queensland portions filmed in Hawaii.
3. Location of the houses on the television show 'Neighbours'

Answer: Erinsborough

The cul-de-sac known as Ramsey Street doesn't actually exist, any more than the fictional suburb of Erinsborough in which it is set. However, the filming is done on location, using the real houses in Pin Oak Court, in Vermont South, a suburb of Melbourne, for the external shots. Internal scenes are filmed at a nearby film studio.
4. Centre of Australia's pearl industry

Answer: Broome

Located in the northwest corner of Australia, over 2000 km north of the Western Australia capital of Perth, Broome has a residential population of around 15,000. During tourist season, this more than triples! In 1889 an overseas telegraph cable, connecting Australia to Singapore, was laid with its landfall in Cable Beach, now better known as one of Australia's most popular nude beaches.
5. Suburb where the Kerrigan family live in the movie 'The Castle'

Answer: Coolaroo

Coolaroo is an actual Melbourne suburb, but the events in the movie (based on plans to acquire homes to allow for an airport expansion) are fictional. The title of the movie comes from the idea that "a man's home is his castle", and the principle that the common person should not be liable to compulsory acquisition of their property without adequate compensation doesn't sound very funny, but the film is full of quaint characters who engage the audience's sympathy.
6. Location of the telescope featured in the movie 'The Dish'

Answer: Parkes

'The Dish' (from the same production company as 'The Castle') is set during the time of man's first landing on the moon, when the Parkes radiotelescope in western New South Wales provided a vital communications link with the mission because of its location in the southern hemisphere. The film mixes a fictional story line with the actual events of the time.
7. Known as the city of churches

Answer: Adelaide

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, was the first major Australian city to be established for a freely-settled colony, rather than being based on transported convicts in a penal colony. It was founded in 1836, and named after Queen Adelaide, consort to William IV who was then King of the United Kingdom.
8. Setting of the television show 'Home and Away'

Answer: Summer Bay

When this soap opera started in 1988, it was about the Fletcher family, including their five foster children, who moved to the fictional New South Wales coastal town of Summer Bay to run a caravan park. Over the years much has changed, but the show continues to film its exterior shots at Palm Beach, one of the beaches just north of Sydney.
9. Outback home of Crocodile Dundee in the movie of that name

Answer: Walkabout Creek

There is no such place as Walkabout Creek, but the filming of scenes ostensibly set there took place in the town of McKinley, Queensland, so you do see what the region is like. The character of Crocodile Dundee was based on the real figure of Rod Ansell, but the overseas exploits are pure fiction, there to try and reach an American market for an Australian film.

The version released in the US differed from the Australian release, having had some serious editing done to replace some Australian colloquialisms with language that would be more easily understood overseas.
10. Home of Skippy, star of 'Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo'

Answer: Waratah National Park

There was no such place as Waratah National Park, but the television show was filmed on location in the Sydney suburb of French's Forest between 1967 and 1969, and the set was later set up as Waratah Park Earth Sanctuary, a popular tourist destination. In 2009 it closed.
